Constructions over soft and loose soils are one of the most frequent problems in many parts of the world. Cement and cement-lime mixture have been widely used for decades to improve the strength of these soils with the deep soil mixing method. In this study, to investigate the freeze-thaw effect of sand improved by polymers (i.e., styrene-acrylic-copolymer-SACP, polyvinyl acetate-PVAc and xanthan gum) and fly ash, unconfined compression tests were performed on specimens which were exposed to freeze-thaw cycles and on specimens which were not exposed to freeze-thaw cycles. The laboratory test results concluded that the unconfined compressive strength increased with the increase of polymer ratio and curing time, whereas, the changes on unconfined compressive strength with increase of freeze-thaw cycles were insignificant. The overall evaluation of results has revealed that polymers containing fly ash is a good promise and potential as a candidate for deep soil mixing application.
Behavior of polymer columns in soft clayey soil: A preliminary study

Deep soil mixing with cement and cement-lime mixtures has been widely used for decades to improve the strength of soils. In this study, small-scale laboratory model tests of polymer columns in soft clayey soil were conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using various polymeric compounds as binders in deep soil mixing. Floating and end bearing polymer columns were used to examine the load-settlement relationship of improved soft clayey soils for various area replacement ratios. The results indicate that polymer columns show good promise for use in deep mixing applications.
Characterization and expression analysis of dirigent family genes related to stresses in Brassica

The dirigent (DIR) genes are playing a vital role in enhancing stress resistance in different crop plants. In this study, we collected 29 DIR like genes, two from a Brassica rapa cv. Osome full length cDNA library and 27 from the B. rapa database designated as B. rapa Dirigent (BrDIR) like genes. Sequence analysis and a comparison study of these genes confirmed that seven were dirigent and the remaining 22 were dirigent like genes. Expression analysis revealed an organ specific expression of these genes. BrDIR2 showed differential responses after Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. conglutinans infection in cabbage. Four Brassica oleracea dirigent like genes highly homologous to BrDIR2 also showed similar responses in cabbage plants infected with this fungus. Moreover, several BrDIR like genes showed significant responses after water, ABA and cold stress treatments in Chinese cabbage. Under water stress, most responsive genes showed the highest expression at 24 h, at which time the acid soluble lignin content of samples under the same stress condition were also highest, indicating a possible relationship between BrDIR like genes and lignin content. Taken together, our results indicate a protective role of BrDIR genes against biotic and abiotic stresses in Brassica.
The Relationship between the Fractal Dimension and Shape Properties of Particles
Seracettin Arasan,Suat Akbulut,A. Samet Hasiloglu 대한토목학회 2011 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.15 No.7
Due to their irregularity, the shape of particles is not accurately described by Euclidian geometry. However, fractal geometry uses the concept of fractal dimension, DR, as a way to describe the shape of particles. In this study, the fractal dimensions and shape properties of particles were determined using image analysis. Exponential relationships between the fractal dimension and roundness, sphericity, angularity, convexity were described. A set of empirical correlations were also presented which clearly demonstrated the link between fractal dimension and shape properties of particles. Additionally, a new classification chart proposed for use in describing and comparing particle shape and fractal dimension.
