Fatigue crack growth in metallic components: Numerical modelling and analytical solution

Danilo D’Angela,Marianna Ercolino 국제구조공학회 2021 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.79 No.5

The paper presents innovative approaches for the simulation of fatigue crack growth (FCG) in metallic compact tension (CT) specimens using finite element (FE) analysis and analytical solution. FE analysis is performed in ABAQUS using the extended finite element method (XFEM) coupled with the direct cyclic low-cycle fatigue (LCF) approach. Novel methods are developed for the computation of the numerical crack growth by processing the analysis outputs. The numerical modelling is validated by considering past experimental data. The analytical solution for the fatigue life evaluation is formally reviewed, and novel fatigue damage descriptors are defined. The influence of the main sample/testing features on numerical and analytical fatigue life is extensively assessed by a parametric study. The discrepancy between the numerical and analytical estimations of the fatigue life of the components is investigated and correlated to the features of the testing/modelling. A statistical-based correction factor is finally proposed in order to enhance the analytical solution.

Short-scar facelift technique combining malar fat pad suspension and lamellar low superficial musculo-aponeurotic system excision

        Angel A,de Larrazabal,FPSCS,FACS,Corazon Collantes-Jose,FPSCS 대한미용의학회 2017 대한미용의학회지 Vol.1 No.2

Background: Minimally invasive surgery is already at the forefront in all surgical specialties, including cosmetic surgery. Hence, we have adapted and modified our technique to offer a short-scar facelift with minimal tissue dissection and manipulation to surgically rejuvenate the aging face. Objective: This study aimed to surgically address the aging face and neck by employing this modified short-scar rhytidectomy with minimal dissection, manipulation, and using the correct vector suited for Asian faces as an alternative and innovative surgical procedure. Methods: We performed this short-scar facelift by combining the malar fad pad suspension and lamellar low superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) excision Results: From 2015 to 2017, we have performed 51 facelift procedures with our modification, with 8 men and 43 women, with a mean age of 64.30 years (range, 50-78 years). Of the 51 patients, 29 patients (56.86%) had regular follow-ups. Three complications were noted. One developed post-operative hematoma. The other developed seroma formation. The third developed split thickness skin necrosis. Majority of our patients were satisfied with the results. Conclusion: This combined malar fat pad suspension and lamellar low SMAS excision technique is a simple, safe, and effective alternative procedure for facelift. Level of Evidence: V

      • The Filipina Connection: the Face of Exploitation in Canada’s Live-in Caregiver Program

        Angela G. Hick(Angela G. Hick ),Anton L. Allahar(Anton L. Allahar ) 한국캐나다학회 2011 Asia-Pacific Journal of Canadian Studies (APJCS) Vol.17 No.1

In this paper we explore why the primary pool of employees in Canada’s Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) are temporary migrant workers, particularly Filipinas, as well as how the Canadian government and its related institutions justify discrepancies in the rights and protections between Canadian workers and those who come legally under Canada’s various migrant worker schemes. In this context specific attention is paid to live-in caregivers or those women who come under the domestic worker scheme. The analysis of the Canadian Live-in Caregiver Program will highlight the dominant ideologies underlying and motivating the federal government’s justification for: (a) the continuation of the program despite great external resistance; (b) the subordinate status of live-in caregivers that derives from their position as “non-citizens;” (c) the subordinate position domestic workers experience as working class women of colour; and (d) the reasoning behind a reliance on female temporary migrant workers of a specific demographic to care for Canadian dependents. To frame the entire discussion we ask (rhetorically) how it is possible for a country such as Canada that prides itself on its positive human rights and worker rights reputation, to defend a program such as the LCP that goes against the much-celebrated image of ‘Canada the good.’

Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Nickel Allergy: What Is the Role of the Low Nickel Diet?

( Angela Rizzi ),( Eleonora Nucera ),( Lucrezia Laterza ),( Eleonora Gaetani ),( Venanzio Valenza ),( Giuseppe M Corbo ),( Riccardo Inchingolo ),( Alessandro Buonomo ),( Domenico Schiavino ),( Antonio 대한소화기기능성질환·운동학회(구 대한소화관운동학회) 2017 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.23 No.1

Background/Aims Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterized by chronic abdominal pain or discomfort accompanied by abnormal bowel movements. In sensitized subjects, ingested nickel (Ni) may induce gastrointestinal symptoms similar to IBS, in addition to typical systemic cutaneous lesions (systemic nickel allergy syndrome [SNAS]). A low nickel diet could improve the systemic manifestations. We evaluated prevalence of nickel allergy in IBS and effects of low Ni diet on (1) gastrointestinal symptoms control, (2) intestinal barrier function, (3) quality of life, and (4) psychological status of patients with IBS and Ni-sensitized patients. Methods Twenty consecutive patients affected by IBS and suspected SNAS underwent intestinal permeability tests. Gastrointestinal symptoms were evaluated using the visual analogue scale before and after 3 months low Ni diet. Subjects with increased intestinal permeability at baseline repeated nuclear examination after the diet. Results The most frequent profile was diarrhea-predominant IBS (8/20). The low Ni diet induced a significant and constant improvement of gastrointestinal symptoms and an equally significant improvement of visual analogue scale. Mean urinary output of 51Chromium ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetate (51Cr-EDTA) was 5.91%/24 hr (± 2.08), significantly different from the control group (2.20%/24 hr ± 0.60, P < 0.0001). Conclusion This pilot study shows that low Ni diet improves gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with IBS and SNAS. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2017;23:101-108)

Coastal Community Mobilization in the Aftermath of Man-made Disasters: A Case Study of Florida Gulf Coast Community Responses after the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the USA

Angela B. Lindsey, Ph.D.,Muthusami Kumaran, Ph.D. 세계환경사회거버넌스학회 2016 World Environment and Island Studies Vol.6 No.1

Coastal areas across the globe and people who live in them are vulnerable to a host of natural disasters including hurricanes, typhoons, and tsunamis. During the past several decades, coastal communities of the world have also been seriously affected by man-made disasters resulting in severe social, economic, and environmental damages. The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill (DWH) was the worst man-made disaster for the Gulf coast communities of the US. Community residents and resource organizations in the Florida Gulf coast responded quickly to address social, economic, and environmental needs after this disaster. The purpose of this single case study is to determine these community responses. The research uses documents from community organizations and in-depth interviews with community leaders. Constant comparative analysis method was used to determine major and sub categories of community efforts. Results show that community efforts centered on collaboration, outreach, and grassroots mobilization for resiliency after the disaster.

Effects of Scalp Acupuncture on Functional Deficits Induced by Early Sensorimotor Restriction

        Angela K. Zanella,Jessié M. Gutierres,Felipe Stigger 사단법인약침학회 2019 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.12 No.3

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of scalp acupuncture and electrostimulation, combined or not, in a disuse model consisted of early sensorimotor restriction in rats. Male Wistar pups received sensorimotor restriction from the second postnatal day (P2) until P28. Animals were divided into five different groups (n Z 6): control (CT), sensorimotor restricted (SR), acupuncture (AC), electrostimulation (EL), and electroacupuncture (ACþEL). Experimental animals received sham, acupuncture, or electrical stimulation, combined or not, of two scalp regions for 7 days (P29-P35). Before treatment period (P29) and after treatment (P36), animals were evaluated with the narrow suspended bar, horizontal ladder, and stride length tests. SR animals had worse performance in the narrow suspended and horizontal ladder tasks compared with SR animals at P29 (p 0.005). Significant improvements were observed in both tasks in AC, EL, and ELþAC groups comparing P29 and P36 (p < 0.001). Also, at P35, all treated animals performed significantly better motor tasks compared with SR group (p < 0.05). There was no difference between treated groups. Finally, acupuncture and electrical stimulation, combined or not, have beneficial effect on motor performance following early developmental disuse.

Quality assurance of quality assurance agencies from an Asian perspective: regulation, autonomy and accountability

Angela Yung Chi Hou 서울대학교 교육연구소 2015 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.16 No.1

As quality guardians of higher education, quality assurance agencies are required to guarantee the credibility of the review process and to ensure the objectivity and transparency of their decisions and recommendations. These agencies are therefore expected to use a range of internal and external approaches to prove the quality of their review activities. Quality assurance agencies in Asia are attempting to enhance their quality capacity through several internal and external approaches. The purpose of this study is to explore internal and external quality assurance mechanisms used by quality assurance agencies in Asian nations, through an international survey of 17 APQN full members and their use of the International Network of Quality assurance Agencies in Higher Education and the Asia–Pacific Quality Network guidelines. The balance between external review and autonomy is discussed at the national and international levels. The challenges and strategies that Asian quality assurance agencies are facing and dealing with are presented as a conclusion at the end of the paper.

어휘적 접근법을 통한 한국어 교육 방안

        Angela Lee-Smith 국제한국어교육학회 2006 한국어 교육 Vol.17 No.1

This study aims to find how to implement the Lexical Approach into Korean Language Teaching. As D. Wilkins pointed out: “Without grammar, little can be conveyed; without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed.” - and this clearly reflects the important role of lexis in language learning. The communication of meaning is placed at the center of language and language learning. This naturally leads to much more emphasis on the main carrier of meaning, lexis (not only just words but also multi-word chunks). Therefore, the concept of a vocabulary should be extended from words to lexis. This paper develops the O-H-E methodology that includes a language learning theory, ‘Noticing and Awareness’. Also, some lexically focused teaching-learning materials are presented as samples. They can be applied to the structure, planning, and implementation of lexically-focused language courses. The changes of mind-set in both content and methodology which implementing the Lexical Approach involves do not mean a radical shift. Rather, they are easily adopted in day-to-day language classes.
