Several plants are used in folk medicine to treat gastrointestinal disorders. Ananas ananassoides(Baker) L.B.Smith (Family Bromeliaceae) is a medicinal plant commonly used in the central region of Brazil against gastric pain. Weevaluated two extracts (methanol [MeOH] and dichloromethane [DCM]) obtained from the leaves of A. ananassoidesfor theirability to protect the gastric mucosa against injuries caused by necrotizing agents (0.3 M HCl/60% ethanol, absolute ethanol,non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and pylorus ligation) in mice and rats. The best results were obtained after pretreat-ment with the DCM extract, whereas the MeOH extract did not show any significant anti-ulcerogenic activity but presentedmutagenic action. The mechanism of action of the DCM extract suggested the effective participation of endogenous sulfhydrylgroup in the gastroprotective action. The data, taken together with the absence of acute toxicity and mutagenicity, indicatethe apolar extract, instead of the polar, extract of A. ananassoides as a safe and potential new anti-ulcerogenic drug.

This research aims to discover the rich picture of problems that hinder the application of integrated watershed ecosystems management and restoration (WEMR) and to formulate the value chain in order to solve the problems of coordination and overlapping activities in the Ciliwung watershed. Rich picture analysis reveals three problems at the policy level, three problems at the organisational level, and four problems at the operational level. To achieve the strategic targets of Ciliwung WEMR, there are value chains that need to be conducted by: 1) enhancing the conservation area; 2) enhancing the hydraulic capacity; and 3) improving the water quality. These three can be accomplished by implementing: 1) sustainable spatial planning of the Ciliwung watershed and 2) institutional setup and community culture strengthening in the Ciliwung watershed. This research should be followed by further research, which studies the model of proper institutional design and collaboration of the actors in the Ciliwung WEMR.
Characterization of Escherichia coli EutD: a Phosphotransacetylase of the Ethanolamine Operon

The Escherichia coli genes pta and eutD encode proteins containing the phosphate-acetyltransferase domain. EutD is composed only by this domain and belongs to the ethanolamine operon. This enzyme has not been characterized yet, and its relationship to the multimodular E. coli phosphotransacetylase (Pta) remains unclear. In the present work, a detailed characterization of EutD from E. coli (EcEutD) was performed. The enzyme is a more efficient phosphotransacetylase than E. coli Pta (EcPta) in catalyzing its reaction in either direction and assembles as a dimer, being differentially modulated by EcPta effectors. When comparing EutD and Pta, both from E. coli, certain divergent regions of the primary structure responsible for their unique properties can be found. The growth on acetate of the E. coli pta acs double-mutant strain, was complemented by either introducing EcEutD or by inducing the eut operon with ethanolamine. In this case, the expression of a phosphotransacetylase different from Pta was confirmed by activity assays. Overall, the results indicate that EcEutD and Pta, although able to catalyse the same reaction, display differential efficiency and regulation, and also differ in the induction of their expression. However, under certain growth conditions, they can fulfil equal roles in E. coli metabolism.

Patients experiencing a cerebrovascular event are vulnerable to declining nutritional status, hindering rehabilitation. This study aims to analyze the association between malnutrition risk and hospital rehabilitation indicators in ischemic stroke sur vivors (ISS). This analytical study examined medical records of 160 adult patients (69.3 ± 13 years). Undernutrition risk (UR; independent variable) and rehabilitation indicators (dependent variables) like hospital stay, clinical outcome, functionality, stroke severity, food intake, mobility (bedridden), mechanical ventilation, and enteral nutrition were assessed. Data were dichotomized, and the chi-square test identified associations (p ≤ 0.05), followed by Poisson regression for prevalence ratios. Patients at UR had 2-fold higher risk of death (95% confidence inter val [CI], 0.99–4.79), 1.8-fold higher risk of high stroke severity (95% CI, 1.06–3.11), 76% higher chance of being bedridden (95% CI, 1.28–2.44), and 3-fold higher risk of mechanical ventilation (95% CI, 1.20–9.52). UR in hospitalized ISS is associated with deteriorating rehabilitation indicators, including mobility, decreased food intake, mechanical ventilation use, and neurological deficit, indicating an increased mortality risk post-stroke
