Experimental Determination of Interfacial Energies for Solid Sn in Equilibrium with Sn-Mg-Zn Liquid

        Yemliha Altıntas,Esra Öztürk,Sezen Aksöz,Kâzım Keşlioğlu,Necmettin Maraşlı 대한금속·재료학회 2015 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.21 No.2

The equilibrated grain boundary groove shapes of solid Sn in equilibrium with Sn-Mg-Zn liquid were observedfrom a quenched sample by using a radial heat flow apparatus. The Gibbs-Thomson coefficient, solid-liquidinterfacial energy and grain boundary energy of solid Sn were determined from the observed grain boundarygroove shapes. The thermal conductivity of the eutectic solid phase for Sn-8.12 at% Mg-4.97 at% Zn alloy and thethermal conductivity ratio of the liquid phase to the solid phase for Sn-8.12 at% Mg-4.97 at% Zn alloy at eutectictemperature were also measured with a radial heat flow apparatus and a Bridgman-type growth apparatus, respectively. The Gibbs-Thomson coefficient, solid-liquid interfacial energy and grain boundary energy of solidSn in equilibrium with Sn-Mg-Zn liquid were determined to be (8.3 ± 0.6)×10-8 Km, (118.5 ± 14.2)×10-3 Jm-2and (225.1 ± 29.3)×10-3 J m-2 respectively from observed grain boundary groove shapes. A comparison ofpresent results for solid Sn in the Sn-8.12 at% Mg-4.97 at% Zn alloy with the results obtained in previous worksfor similar solid Sn in equilibrium with different binary or ternary liquid was made.

Evaluation of high resolution computed tomography findings of cystic fibrosis

( Ayse Senay Sasihuseyinoglu ),( Derya Ufuk Altıntas ),( Sureyya Soyupak ),( Dilek Dogruel ),( Mustafa Yılmaz ),( Mahir Serbes ),( Gulsah Duyuler ) 대한내과학회 2019 The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine Vol.34 No.2

Background/Aims: Morphological changes due to lung disease in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) were evaluated using high resolution computed tomography (HRCT), and the HRCT scores obtained using the Bhalla scoring system were correlated with those obtained using clinical and laboratory indicators. Methods: Medical records of 28 children with CF who underwent chest CT in Department of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, Cukurova University Balcali Hospital between March 2011 and January 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic data and physical examination, respiratory cultures, pulmonary function tests, and chest HRCT findings were evaluated. Patients were divided into the following two groups according to their forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) values: normal FEV1 (≥ 80% of predicted values) and low FEV1 (< 80% of predicted values). Deep throat or sputum cultures were evaluated for the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PsA) and other bacteria. HRCT scans were scored using the Bhalla scoring system. Results: No significant correlation was found between the Bhalla scores and sex, age group, or height percentiles. Significant relationships were found between the Bhalla score and weight (p = 0.036) and body mass index (BMI) (p = 0.032) percentiles below the third percentile, bacterial growth in the sputum/ deep throat cultures (p = 0.009), and presence of PsA (p = 0.004). Moreover, a significant correlation was found between the Bhalla score and FEV1 (r = -0.315, p = 0.0272), forced vital capacity (FVC; r = -0.381, p = 0.0178), forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of FVC (r = -0.229, p = 0.0431), and BMI (r = -3.368, p = 0.050). Conclusions: Chest HRCT is an important diagnostic tool for the pulmonary evaluation of children with CF.

The Effect of Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica) Seed Oil on Experimental Colitis in Rats

        Zeynep Genc,Aysen Yarat,Tugba Tunali-Akbay,Goksel Sener,Sule Cetinel,Rabia Pisiriciler,Esin Caliskan-Ak,Ayhan Altıntas,Betul Demirci 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.12

This study investigated the effect of Urtica dioica, known as stinging nettle, seed oil (UDO) treatment on colonic tissue and blood parameters of trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis in rats. Experimental colitis was induced with 1mL of TNBS in 40% ethanol by intracolonic administration with a 8-cm-long cannula with rats under ether anesthesia, assigned to a colitis group and a colitis +UDO group. Rats in the control group were given saline at the same volume by intracolonic administration. UDO (2.5mL/kg) was given to the colitis +UDO group by oral administration throughout a 3-day interval, 5 minutes later than colitis induction. Saline (2.5 mL/kg) was given to the control and colitis groups at the same volume by oral administration. At the end of the experiment macroscopic lesions were scored, and the degree of oxidant damage was evaluated by colonic total protein, sialic acid, malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione levels, collagen content, tissue factor activity, and superoxide dismutase and myeloperoxidase activities. Colonic tissues were also examined by histological and cytological analysis. Pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-a, interleukin-1b, and interleukin-6), lactate dehydrogenase activity, and triglyceride and cholesterol levels were analyzed in blood samples. We found that UDO decreased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, lactate dehydrogenase, triglyceride, and cholesterol, which were increased in colitis. UDO administration ameliorated the TNBS-induced disturbances in colonic tissue except for MDA. In conclusion, UDO, through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions, merits consideration as a potential agent in ameliorating colonic inflammation.
