Secure Blocking + Secure Matching = Secure Record Linkage
Alexandros Karakasidis,Vassilios S. Verykios 한국정보과학회 2011 Journal of Computing Science and Engineering Vol.5 No.3
Performing approximate data matching has always been an intriguing problem for both industry and academia. This task becomes even more challenging when the requirement of data privacy rises. In this paper, we propose a novel technique to address the problem of efficient privacy-preserving approximate record linkage. The secure framework we propose consists of two basic components. First, we utilize a secure blocking component based on phonetic algorithms statistically enhanced to improve security. Second, we use a secure matching component where actual approximate matching is performed using a novel private approach of the Levenshtein Distance algorithm. Our goal is to combine the speed of private blocking with the increased accuracy of approximate secure matching.

Alexandros Kotanidis,Eleana Kontonasaki,Petros Koidis 대한치과보철학회 2019 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.11 No.4
PURPOSE. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the color changes of an autopolymerizing PMMA resin used for interim fixed restorations, reinforced with SiO2 nanoparticles. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Silica nanoparticles were blended with the PMMA resin powder through high-energy ball milling. Four shades of PMMA resin were used (A3, B3, C3, D3) and total color differences were calculated through the equations ΔEab=[(ΔL*)² + (Δa*)² + (Δb*)²]½ and ΔE00= . Statistically significant differences between ΔEab and the clinically acceptable values of 3.3 and 2.7 and those between ΔE00 and the clinically acceptable value of 1.8 were evaluated with one sample t-test (P<.05). Differences among the different shades were assessed through One-Way ANOVA and Bonferroni multiple comparison tests. RESULTS. Significantly lower values were detected for all groups concerning ΔEab compared to the intraorally clinical acceptable values of 3.3 and 2.7. Significantly lower mean values were detected for groups B3, C3, and D3, concerning ΔE00 compared to the intraorally clinical acceptant value of 1.8. Color pigments in red-brown (A3) and red-grey (D3) shades affect the total color change to a greater extent after the reinforcement with SiO2 nanoparticles compared to the red-yellow (B3) shade. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this in vitro study, it can be suggested that reinforcing PMMA with SiO2 nanoparticles at 0.25 wt% slightly affects the optical properties of the PMMA resin without being clinically perceivable.

PET/SiO2 layers were chemically modified to maintain immobilization of functional single molecules. GFP molecules provide an ideal system due to their stability and intrinsic fluorescence. GFP in vivo biotinylated within its NH2-terminal region and attached on the substrate via the biotin–streptavidin bond was further investigated with confocal microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). AFM revealed monolayered donut-like structures representing assemblies of biotin–streptavidin–biotin–GFP immobilized onto PET/SiO_2 surfaces via mPEG. In particular, regions with an approximate height of 12 nm, which approaches the molecular dimensions of the above complex given by molecular modeling, could be detected. The dimensions of the donut-like structures suggest a close-to-each-other positioning of the GFP molecules — which, however, retain their functionality, as evidenced by confocal microscopy.

Backgrounds/Aims: It is important to point out that the identification of inflammation is an essential component of the pathogenesis and the progression of cancer. In this study, we analysed the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelets-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), with an overall survival (OS) in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), who were treated with a resection following or not following a procedure of neoadjuvant chemotherapy/chemoradiation. We intended to identify the significance of the role of NLR and PLR, as prognostic markers in patients undergoing surgery for PDAC. Methods: There were 127 patients enrolled in the study. The NLR and PLR were calculated on the basis of the pre-treatment blood cell count. An NLR>4 and a PLR >120 were considered to be elevated as measured. OS was analysed in relation to the NLR and PLR values, by using both the Kaplan-Meier and multivariate Cox-regression methods. Results: Both high the NLR and high PLR were associated with a decreased OS in the univariate analysis. In the multivariate analysis, the high NLR, but not the high PLR, was an independent predictor of a decreased OS. When we divided patients into three groups (group 1: normal both NLR and PLR, group 2: high NLR or high PLR, group 3: high both NLR and PLR), the three-years OS rates for these groups were 48%, 32%, 7% (p=0.001) respectively. Conclusions: It is noted that the pre-treatment NLR is an independent adverse prognostic factor, and considered to be superior to the PLR, in patients who undergo a resection for PDAC following or not neoadjuvant chemotherapy/chemoradiation.
Theories, Strategies and Elements of Gamified MOOCs: A Systematic Literature Review
Alexandros Papadimitriou 한국경영정보학회 2024 Asia Pacific Journal of Information Systems Vol.34 No.1
A few years before, MOOCs appeared and developed at a rapid pace. Various MOOC methods, theories, strategies, elements, and techniques were used to improve distance education. In their development, their weaknesses like dropout, low participation, low completion rate, low engagement, and others have emerged that are addressed by recent studies including that of gamified and adaptive gamified MOOCs. This article presents the most important theories, strategies, and elements used in gamification and their usefulness and contribution to MOOCs, with the ultimate goal of proving rich information to researchers, application designers, and practitioners of gamified and adaptive gamified MOOCs.
18F-FDG PET/CT Imaging of Pulmonary Mucinous Cystadenocarcinoma with Signet Ring Cells
Alexandros Kalkanis,Leonidas Palaiodimos,Ifigeneia Klinaki,Dimitrios Karantanis,Dimitrios Kalkanis 대한핵의학회 2017 핵의학 분자영상 Vol.51 No.3
A 63-year-old male with a recently diagnosed right lung lesion was referred for staging. F-FDG PET/CT scan revealed a hypodense, cystic-like mass in the right upper lung lobe, which demonstrated low, diffuse 18FFDG uptake, likely due to the presence of mucus, as well as intensely hypermetabolic right hilar and right paratracheal lymph nodes. Transbronchial biopsy revealed a primary pulmonary mucinous cystadenocarcinoma with the presence of signet ring cell carcinoma, a co-existence of two rare variants of lung adenocarcinoma. This case report demonstrates the metabolic phenotype along with the radiographic characteristics of this rare tumor and its metastases.

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus have increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Epidemiological studieshave shown a correlation between diet and incidence of coronary heart disease. The aim of the study is to determine the ef-fect of a traditional Greek Mediterranean diet on platelet aggregation induced by ADP, arachidonic acid (AA), and especiallyplatelet-activating factor (PAF) on patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus as well as on healthy volunteers. The patients wererandomized into two subgroups, A and B. The lipid extracts from traditional Greek Mediterranean-type meals were tested invitrofor their ability to reduce PAF- or thrombin-induced platelet aggregation. The meals with the most potent anti-aggre-gating activity were chosen for the diet of both subgroup A and healthy subjects and consumed for a period of 28 days, whereassubgroup B kept to their regular diet that was followed before entering the study. Platelet-rich plasma was isolated before andafter the diet, and the ability of platelets to aggregate under the aggregating factors was tested. One-month consumption ofdiet resulted in a significant reduction in PAF- and ADP-induced aggregation of platelets in both groups of healthy volun-teers (PAF and ADP, P. .05) and subgroup A (PAF, P. .001; ADP, P. .05), whereas the AA-induced aggregation wasnot affected. No effect was observed in subgroup B, which followed the standard diet. Thus the consumption of a traditionalGreek Mediterranean diet even for a short period can reduce platelet activity in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes mel-litus and in healthy subjects.
Electroacupuncture for the Treatment of Calcific Tendonitis. A Pilot Study

Current treatment for calcific tendonitis consists of arm rest, antiinflammatory medications, and corticosteroid injections. If unsuccessful, a lot of clinicians suggest several physiotherapy modalities, such as shockwave therapy and electrotherapy. The purpose of our study was to assess the efficacy of electroacupuncture, as a substitute for failed medical treatment in calcific tendonitis. In a pilot study, we prospectively followed 10 patients treated with electroacupuncture for calcific tendonitis who failed to respond to medical treatment. Its efficacy was assessed by evaluating the level of pain, the Beck Depression Inventory, the range of active elbow mobility, and by repeated radiological evaluation of the course of calcific deposits. All clinical and radiological observations were recorded before and within 6 months after the onset of treatment. After electroacupuncture treatment (2 Hz, 180 mA for 30–60 seconds at GB21, GB34, LI4, LI 14, LI15, TW5, TW14, Chien Chien SI9, SI12, S37, S38), the visual analog score decreased notably, and the range of motion returned to normal. Radiological evaluation demonstrated almost complete absorption of calcific deposits within 6 months, after treatment. We conclude that electroacupuncture relieved skeletal pain, improved the quality of patient's life, and contributed to total regression of the calcific depositions in followed patients. So, electroacupuncture may be a valuable treatment option for calcific tendonitis, when medical treatment fails to relieve symptoms.
