Linguistics, Philology, Translation and Saussure’s Cours de linguistique g én érale
Alec Gordon 한국외국어대학교 통번역연구소 2008 통번역학연구 Vol.12 No.1
Biden's Administration and Democracy : U.S. Strategies and Prospects toward Non-Democratic Countries
Alec Chung 제주평화연구원 2021 Jeju Forum Journal Vol.2021 No.2
Joe Biden has been emphasizing the value of democracy and the need to defend and spread the political system since taking office as the President of the United States. In addition, Biden continues to emphasize the need for cooperation and ties between democratic countries to check and balance against non-democratic countries such as China. In particular, recently, to counter China's One Belt, One Road project, Biden proposed the establishment of a new version of the project led by democracies. In this regard, the author intends to examine what kind of cooperation and solidarity between democracies is Biden envisioning and what effect Biden's initiative will have on the international political order and South Korea's diplomatic strategy.
Rotator Cuff Deficient Arthritis of the Glenohumeral Joint
Alec A. Macaulay,R. Michael Greiwe,Louis U. Bigliani 대한정형외과학회 2010 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.2 No.4
Rotator cuff deficient arthritis of the glenohumeral joint, especially cuff tear arthropathy, has proved a challenging clinical entity for orthopaedic surgeons ever since Charles Neer originally detailed the problem in 1983. Understanding has improved regarding the pathophysiology and pathomechanics underlying cuff tear arthropathy. Surgical reconstruction options can lead to excellent outcomes for patients afflicted with these painful and functionally limited shoulders. Humeral hemiarthroplasty and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty have jumped to the forefront in the treatment of cuff tear arthropathy. As studies continue to look at the results of these procedures in cuff tear arthropathy, existing indications and treatment algorithms will be further refined. In this article the history and pathophysiology of cuff tear arthropathy are reviewed. Additionally, the clinical findings and results of surgical reconstruction are discussed.

What is the determinant of an individual’s attitudes on economic and political situations? Following Achen and Bartels (2016), we focus on the partisan effects of group identity. We argue that partisan identity is critical to thinking about the economic and political circumstances of democratic citizens. To substantiate this argument, we choose South Korea as a key exemplar case. Using statistical analysis on South Korea survey data, the results show that individuals’ attitudes on economic and political situations depend largely on the partisan difference between the ruling cabinets and their own. In other words, liberals tend to view the economic and political circumstances negatively when conservative administration governs, but positively when liberal administration governs even though economic and democratic conditions have not changed much.

States form alliances with others to increase their influence and power against their opponents. Thus, whether a state has alliances and how much material capabilities they possess affect whether the narrowing power gap will increase or decrease conflicts between states. In other words, rather than focusing only on states, it is important to focus on the power transition between alliance blocs (i.e., alliance transition). While the Republic of Korea (ROK) has established the United States as a military alliance, the United States has numerous allies worldwide. On the other hand, even though the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has few official military allies, it has China behind its back. In this context, this study aims to examine, using statistical analysis, how power distribution between alliance blocs affected inter-Korean relations during the 1990-2021 period. The empirical findings show that a shift in the ROK-U.S. and China-DPRK power distribution in favor of the latter negatively affected inter-Korean relations. A shift in the power distribution between the ROK-U.S. Asian alliance coalition and China-DPRK in the latter’s favor also had a negative effect on the relations between the two Koreas. Expanding the scope of alliance, a power distribution shift between China-DPRK-Russia and the ROK-U.S. Asian allies plus NATO members in the former’s favor had a negative impact on the DPRK-ROK relations. Through empirical research, this study found that having allies (or ally’s allies) and how powerful they are play a key role in shaping relations between two states.
