Analysis of partially embedded beams in two-parameter foundation

        Akoz, A.Yalcin,Ergun, Hale Techno-Press 2012 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.42 No.1

In this study, Pasternak foundation model, which is a two parameter foundation model, is used to analyze the behavior of laterally loaded beams embedded in semi-infinite media. Total potential energy variation of the system is written to formulate the problem that yielded the required field equations and the boundary conditions. Shear force discontinuities are exposed within the boundary conditions by variational method and are validated by photo elastic experiments. Exact solution of the deflection of the beam is obtained. Both foundation parameters are obtained by self calibration for this particular problem and loading type in this study. It is shown that, like the first parameter k, the second foundation parameter G also depends not only on the material type but also on the geometry and the loading type of the system. On the other hand, surface deflection of the semi infinite media under singular loading is obtained and another method is proposed to determine the foundation parameters using the solution of this problem.

A sectorial element based on Reissner plate theory

        Akoz, A. Yalcin,Eratli, Nihal Techno-Press 2000 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.9 No.6

In this study, a new functional based on the Reissner theory, for thick plates on a Winkler foundation is obtained. This functional has geometric and dynamic boundary conditions. In deriving the new functional, the $G{\hat{a}}teaux$ differential is used. This functional which is in polar coordinates is also transformable into the classical potential energy equation. Bending and torsional moments, transverse shear forces, rotations and displacements are the basic unknowns of the functional. Two different sectorial elements are developed with $3{\times}8$ degrees of freedom (SEC24) and $4{\times}8$ degrees of freedom (SEC32). The accuracy of the SEC24 and SEC32 elements together are verified by applying the method to some problems taken from literature.

      • The Effect of Cross-Shore Sediment Transport on Bar Parameters: an Experimental Study

Demirci, Mustafa,Akoz, M. Sami Korean Society of Ocean Engineers 2012 International journal of ocean system engineering Vol.2 No.1

The cross-shore sediment transport in a coastal region causes the important changes in beach morphological properties. The accurate estimation of the cross-shore sediment transport is important for the designing of the marine structures such as seawalls, jetties, breakwaters etc, and the preventing coastal erosion and accretion due to on-off shore sediment transportation. In this study, the experiments on cross- shore sediment transport carried out in a laboratory wave channel for initial beach slopes of 1/8, 1/10 and 1/15. Using the regular waves with different deep-water wave steepness generated by a pedal-type wave generator, the geometrical characteristics of beach profiles under storm conditions and the parameters affecting on-off shore sediment transport are investigated for the beach materials having medium diameters of $d_{50}$=0.25, 0.32, 0.45, 0.62 and 0.80 mm. The experimental results obtained from this study compared with previous experimental work and found to be of the same magnitude as the experimental measurements and followed the expected basic trend.

Investigation of bar parameters occurred by cross-shore sediment transport

Demirci, Mustafa,Akoz, M. Sami The Society of Naval Architects of Korea 2013 International Journal of Naval Architecture and Oc Vol.5 No.2

Cross-shore sediment transport is very important factor in the design of coastal structures, and the beach profile is mainly affected by a number of parameters, such as wave height and period, beach slope, and the material properties of the bed. In this study cross-shore sediment movement was investigated using a physical model and various offshore bar geometric parameters were determined by the resultant erosion profile. The experiments on cross- shore sediment transport carried out in a laboratory wave channel for initial base slopes of 1/8, 1/10 and 1/15. Using the regular waves with different deep-water wave steepness generated by a pedal-type wave generator, the geometrical of sediment transport rate and considerable characteristics of beach profiles under storm conditions and bar parameters affecting on-off shore sediment transport are investigated for the beach materials with the medium diameter of $d_{50}$=0.25, 0.32, 0.45, 0.62 and 0.80 mm. Non-dimensional equations were obtained by using linear and non-linear regression methods through the experimental data and were compared with previously developed equations in the literature. The results have shown that the experimental data fitted well to the proposed equations with respect to the previously developed equations.

Free vibration analysis of Reissner plates by mixed finite element

        Eratli, Nihal,Akoz, A. Yalcin Techno-Press 2002 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.13 No.3

In this study, free vibration analysis of Reissner plates on Pasternak foundation is carried out by mixed finite element method based on the G$\hat{a}$teaux differential. New boundary conditions are established for plates on Pasternak foundation. This method is developed and applied to numerous problems by Ak$\ddot{o}$z and his co-workers. In dynamic analysis, the problem reduces to the solution of a standard eigenvalue problem and the mixed element is based upon a consistent mass matrix formulation. The element has four nodes and bending and torsional moments, transverse shear forces, rotations and displacements are the basic unknowns. The element performance is assessed by comparison with numerical examples known from literature. Validity limits of Kirchhoff plate theory is tested by dynamic analysis. Shear locking effects are tested as far as $h/2a=10^{-6}$ and it is observed that REC32 is free from shear locking.

The mixed finite element for quasi-static and dynamic analysis of viscoelastic circular beams

        Kadioglu, Fethi,Akoz, A. Yalcin Techno-Press 2003 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.15 No.6

The quasi-static and dynamic responses of a linear viscoelastic circular beam on Winkler foundation are studied numerically by using the mixed finite element method in transformed Laplace-Carson space. This element VCR12 has 12 independent variables. The solution is obtained in transformed space and Schapery, Dubner, Durbin and Maximum Degree of Precision (MDOP) transform techniques are employed for numerical inversion. The performance of the method is presented by several quasi-static and dynamic example problems.

Mixed finite element formulation for folded plates

        Eratli, Nihal,Akoz, A. Yalcin Techno-Press 2002 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.13 No.2

In this study, a new functional is obtained for folded plates with geometric (kinematic) and dynamic (natural) boundary conditions. This functional is the combination of two different functionals. Both functionals are obtained for thick plates which carry in-plane and lateral forces. A new mixed finite element is developed with $4{\times}13$ nodal parameters for folded plates (REC52). Forces and moments which are the necessary unknowns in engineering problems are obtained directly using the technique suggested here. The use of the global co-ordinate system causes time consuming operations and therefore the Lagrange multiplier method is used to relate the components of the parameters on the fold line. Numerical results are presented for folded plates and compared with experimental results.

Is there a relationship between beginning time and efficiency of octreotide in the treatment of experimental acute pancreatitis?

        M. Ertugrul Kafali,Mehmet Gul,Husnu Alptekin,Mustafa Sahin,Hatice Toy,Mehmet Akoz 대한외과학회 2012 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.82 No.5

Purpose: The efficacy of octreotide in the treatment of acute pancreatitis is controversial. Octreotide treatment for acute pancreatitis often shows poor correlation between results obtained in experimental studies and results of clinical trials. In a clinical setting, there is always a delay between the onset of the disease and initiation of the octreotide treatment. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the beginning of treatment and alteration in effectiveness of octreotide. Methods: Acute pancreatitis was induced by pancreatic duct ligation in 50 rats. The rats were randomly divided into five groups. Octreotide was not used in group 1 (control group). Only single dose (4 ㎍/㎏) octreotide was administered subcutaneously to rats in group 2, having induced pancreatitis. Octreotide treatment was begun at different times (8th, 24th, 48th hour) in three other groups and continued treatment at a dosage of 4 μg/kg t.i.d. The animals were sacrificed at the end of the 72nd hour and blood and tissue samples were collected. Results: Leukocyte count and plasma amylase values were less in groups 2 and 3. Hemorrhagic focuses were encountered less at pancreas tissues in group 3. Pancreatic necrosis and alveolar capillary basal membrane damage were lower in groups 3 and 4. No difference was found in fasting blood glucose, calcium and hematocrit. Conclusion: Octreotide had benefical effects in acute pancreatitis when octreotide treatment was begun in the first 24 hours.
