        Education of Power Electronics in Japan

        Power electronics is an interdisciplinary area that is interstitial to all of the major disciplines of electrical engineering including power, electronics and control Today, the covering field of power electronics has more widely spread out with the help of ever evolving microelectronics and computer science Whereas, in Japan the tendency is becoming remarkable nowadays that science, especially "mathematics" and "hardware work", are falling into disfavor with the young people<br/> For these reasons, it has become a very important problem to find out "what are the truest essentials of power electronics?" and "How to give students incentives to learn power electronics?" from an educational point of view in under-graduate and graduate courses in universities. On the other hand, the power electronics engineers in companies are always required to comply with the ever changing trend of global and open market. However, it takes long time to cultivate their skills Against the background, "The Cooperative Research Committee on Education of Power Electronics" was established in the lEEJ Industry Applications Society during 2000-2001 The present status of the power electronics education in Japan is surveyed m this paper, and some problems with remedy are pointed out based on the discussions performed in the committee.

      • Analysis of High Frequency Voltage-Resonat Push-Pull Converter

        In a conventional analysis of a voltage-reso-nant push-pul] converter, resonant frequency and out-put voltage are obtained as constant, even if the out-put current of the converter changes. However, experi-mentally these values are known to vary with the out-put current. No qualitative or quantitative interpre-tation has been made on this point yet. This paper describes a new analysis of the converter, considering leakage inductance of a transformer. The variation is found to be caused by parasitic resonance which occurs between the leakage inductance of the transformer and the capacitance of the resonant capacitor. The new method allows the characteristics of the converter to be analyzed quantitatively. Then the varlation of the resonant frequency and the output voltage can be decreased through an increase of the coupling coefficient of the transformer or the resonant current of the converter. Furthermore, the generalized characteristics of the voltage-resonant push-pull converter can be derived from this analysis.

      • A Design Strategy for the LCR Filter and Carrier Frequency in a Series Voltage Compensator

        In this paper, we propose the LCR filter design method and the carrier frequency decision method in the series voltage compensator. In this proposed design method, the filter $L_f$ is calculated from the peak value of the ripple current, and the filter $C_f$ is calculated from the ripple voltage component. The damping resistance is calculated from the percentage of the elimination of the carrier frequency component and the settling time. We verify a model equipment in the experiment, and the experimental results agree well with the calculated design values.
