Trajectories in Biblical Exegesis Matthew Poole: Synopsis Criticorum Sacra

Early modern works of biblical commentary are often overlooked, in particular philological and etymological oriented exegetical works. An example of such works is the Synopsis criticorum by Matthew Poole (ca. 1624-1679), though widely known and internationally recognized in the seventeenth and early eighteenth century. Poole’s Synopsis criticorum, then, is examined in terms of content and historical context. The use of the work by Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758), furthermore, underscores the relevance of Poole’s biblical commentary, and offer consideration why such pre-critical commentary should matter for preachers and teachers today.

Hypertension is common in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients. It remains to be determined the extent to which fluid overload contributes to uncontrolled blood pressure (BP) in this population. The aim was to determine the association between fluid status as measured using bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) and BP in CAPD patients.A cross-sectional study was performed involving 50 stable CAPD patients at a single center in Cape Town, South Africa. All participants were known to have hypertension and were divided into two groups based on office BP measurements: an uncontrolled BP group (systolic BP ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥ 90 mmHg) and a controlled BP group. Fluid status was determined using BIS (Body Composition Monitor®, Fresenius Medical Care, Bad Homburg, Germany). There was a statistically significant difference in overhydration (OH) between the uncontrolled BP group and the controlled BP group (3.0 ± 2.3 L vs. 1.4 ± 1.6 L, respectively, P = 0.01). The uncontrolled BP group was older (37.7 ± 9.5 years vs. 32.0 ± 8.0 years, P = 0.04) and had a shorter dialysis vintage (15 [IQR, 7–22] months vs. 31 [IQR, 12–39] months, P = 0.02). Significant correlations were found between OH and the extracellular water (ECW) ( r = 0.557, P < 0.01) and ECW to total body water (TBW) ratio ( r = 0.474, P < 0.01). Mixed ancestry, presence of residual kidney function, ECW, and ECW to TBW ratio were identified as predictors of OH on multivariable linear regression. We found that stable CAPD patients with uncontrolled BP had higher OH compared to patients whose BP was controlled.
Green liquor extraction of hemicelluloses from southern pine in an Integrated Forest Biorefinery

Loblolly Pine chips were extracted with fresh green liquor solutions containing sufficient alkalinity to approximately neutralize the acids released upon treatment of the chip-liquor mass at elevated temperatures of 170, 180 and 190 8C for various times. The components of green liquor extracts were then quantified using high pressure anion exchange chromatography and UV spectrophotometer. The time–temperature effect on the extracted yields including the wood weight loss of wood chips after extraction could be well described by the H-factor approach. Sugar components were all found in their polymeric forms in the liquor. About 2.5–3% of wood mass was extracted as total sugars at an H-factor of about 4000. In general, mannose showed lower extraction than xylose. With increasing chemical charge, arabinoglucuronoxylan and galactoglucomannan extracts decreased, whereas dissolved lignin increased. Cellulose showed a minimum dependence on H-factor and chemical charge. The total sugar showed an inverse proportionality to the final liquor pH that rapidly dropped from alkali to the neutral in the very early stages of extraction and leveled off slowly reaching the acid region. Significant difference between total organic yield and the weight loss provides a possible evidence for the presence of significant amount of low molecular weight dissolved organics that were not accounted for.

The latissimus dorsi flap is popular due to the versatile nature of its applications. When usedas a pedicled flap it provides a robust solution when soft tissue coverage is required followingbreast, thoracic and head and neck surgery. Its utilization as a free flap is extensive due to themuscle’s size, constant anatomy, large caliber of the pedicle and the fact it can be used forfunctional muscle transfers. In facial palsy it provides the surgeon with a long neurovascularpedicle that is invaluable in situations where commonly used facial vessels are not available,in congenital cases or where previous free functional muscle transfers have been attempted,or patients where a one-stage procedure is indicated and a long nerve is required to reachthe contra-lateral side. Although some facial palsy surgeons use the trans-axillary approach,an operative guide of raising the flap by this method has not been provided. A clear guide ofraising the flap with the patient in the supine position is described in detail and offers thebenefits of reducing the risk of potential brachial plexus injury and allows two surgical teamsto work synchronously to reduce operative time.

The attractiveness for weapons usage of the proposed fuel cycle for the PT-SCWR was evaluated in this study using the Figure-of-Merit methodology. It was compared to the attractiveness of other fuel cycles namely, Low Enriched Uranium (LEU), U/Th, Re-enriched Reprocessed Uranium (RepU), and Pu/Th/U. The optimal content of natural uranium, which can be added to Pu/Th to render the produced U-233 unattractive, was found to be 9%. A ranking system to compare the attractiveness of the various fuel cycles is proposed. RepU was found to be the most proliferation resistant fuel cycle for the first 100 years,while, the least proliferation resistant fuel cycle was the originally proposed Pu/Th one. The reactivity feedback coefficients were calculated for all proposed fuel cycles. All studied reactivity coefficients have the same sign implying that all the fuel cycles will behave neutronically in a similar way. The Pu/Th/U fuel was found to have the most negative value of the Coolant Void Reactivity which will help to restore the core to a safe status faster in case of a loss-of-coolant accident. The fuel and moderator temperature coefficients did not show significant differences between the fuels studied.
