The Faerie Queene, II. i-ii: Amavia, Medina, and the Myth of Lucretia

        Ivan Ca?adas 한국중세근세영문학회 2007 중세르네상스 영문학 Vol.15 No.2

There is critical consensus that Medina (The Faerie Queene, II.ii) represents a mean between the errors of excess and deficiency embodied by her sisters, Elissa and Perissa. Medina's significance as a figure of moderation is first illustrated when she restores the peace between her sisters' champions Sansloy and Huddibras and Guyon, who had attempted to stop the initial strife between them. Medina's stunning irruption, and her passionate appeal to the knights to cease fighting, is stunning from a dramatic point of view, and, as the present paper will demonstrate, involves a complex and distinctly ironic allusion to the legendary Lucretia, as treated by Livy and Ovid an allusion which, in turn, forms part of Spenser's Augustinian commentary on heroism and suicide, as manifested in the deaths of Mortdant and Amavia in the immediately previous canto. By these means, the reader is made to contrast the destructive example of the maternal suicide, Amavia, in II.i, with the positive attributes of Medina, whose nobility and heroism are manifested, in Canto 2, through her nurturing, life-affirming role of hostess and peacemaker.

      • Comparison of 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional Conformal Treatment Plans in Gastric Cancer Radiotherapy

        Adas, Yasemin Guzle,Andrieu, Meltem Nalca,Hicsonmez, Ayse,Atakul, Tugba,Dirican, Bahar,Aktas, Caner,Yilmaz, Sercan,Akyurek, Serap,Gokce, Saban Cakir,Ergocen, Salih Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.17

Background: Postoperative chemoradiotherapy is accepted as standard treatment for stage IB-IV, M0 gastric cancer. Radiotherapy (RT) planning of gastric cancer is important because of the low radiation tolerance of surrounding critical organs. The purpose of this study was to compare the dosimetric aspects of 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) treatment plans, with the twin aims of evaluating the adequacy of 2D planning fields on coverage of planning target volume (PTV) and 3D conformal plans for both covering PTV and reducing the normal tissue doses. Materials and Methods: Thirty-six patients with stage II-IV gastric adenocarcinoma were treated with adjuvant chemoradiotherapy using 3DRT. For each patient, a second 2D treatment plan was generated. The two techniques were compared for target volume coverage and dose to normal tissues using dose volume histogram (DVH) analysis. Results: 3DRT provides more adequate coverage of the target volume. Comparative DVHs for the left kidney and spinal cord demonstrate lower radiation doses with the 3D technique. Conclusions: 3DRT produced better dose distributions and reduced radiation doses to left kidney and spinal cord compared to the 2D technique. For this reason it can be predicted that 3DRT will result in better tumor control and less normal tissue complications.

      • Whole Brain Radiotherapy Combined with Stereotactic Radiosurgery versus Stereotactic Radiosurgery Alone for Brain Metastases

        Adas, Yasemin Guzle,Yazici, Omer,Kekilli, Esra,Akkas, Ebru Atasever,Karakaya, Ebru,Ucer, Ali Riza,Ertas, Gulcin,Calikoglu, Tamer,Elgin, Yesim,Inan, Gonca Altinisik,Kocer, Ali Mert,Guney, Yildiz Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.17

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) combined with streotactic radiosurgery versus stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) alone for patients with brain metastases. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study that evaluated the results of 46 patients treated for brain metastases at Dr. Abdurrahman Yurtaslan Ankara Oncology Training and Research Hospital, Radiation Oncology Department, between January 2012 and January 2015. Twenty-four patients were treated with WBRT+SRS while 22 patients were treated with only SRS. Results: Time to local recurrence was 9.7 months in the WBRT+SRS arm and 8.3 months in SRS arm, the difference not being statistically significant (p=0.7). Local recurrence rate was higher in the SRS alone arm but again without significance (p=0,06). Conclusions: In selected patient group with limited number (one to four) of brain metastases SRS alone can be considered as a treatment option and WBRT may be omitted in the initial treatment.

Questioning Men's Love in Sir Philip Sidney's Astrophil and Stella and Lady Mary Wroth's Pamphilia to Amphilanthus

Ivan Cañadas 한국중세근세영문학회 2005 중세르네상스 영문학 Vol.13 No.1

The achievement of Tudor-Stuart sonnet sequences was arguably their construction, examination, and redefinition of the nature of love, a process which makes Sir Philip Sidney's Astrophil and Stella (c. 1591) and Lady Mary Wroth's Pamphilia to Amphilanthus (1621) particularly fascinating. Representing the best-known and the last such poetic enterprises in the period―the former by a man, the latter by a woman―both sequences paint a wry, scathing portrait of male heterosexual love, by portraying male inconstancy, self-indulgence, and, in Sidney's sequence, sexualized aggression. This point of convergence warrants close examination of the two sequences. The present article contributes to ongoing work in gender studies and early modern poetry, not only with respect to Wroth's poetry, but also by identifying in Sidney a quasi-feminine―if not, indeed, proto-feminist―sensibility, a response contrary, yet linked, to that of misogyny; for both responses were arguably elicited by the extraordinary circumstances of a female-centered court. In these circumstances, courtiers like Sidney were not only peculiarly feminized, or emasculated, but also were in a position in which―to use a modern formulation―they may have deemed it desirable, or profitable, to be in touch with their feminine side.

      • Evaluation of the Radiation Pneumonia Development Risk in Lung Cancer Cases

Yilmaz, Sercan,Adas, Yasemin Guzle,Hicsonmez, Ayse,Andrieu, Meltem Nalca,Akyurek, Serap,Gokce, Saban Cakir Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.17

Background: Concurrent chemo-radiotherapy is the recommended standard treatment modality for patients with locally advanced lung cancer. The purpose of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) is to minimize normal tissue damage while a high dose can be delivered to the tumor. The most common dose limiting side effect of thoracic RT is radiation pneumonia (RP). In this study we evaluated the relationship between dose-volume histogram parameters and radiation pneumonitis. This study targeted prediction of the possible development of RP and evaluation of the relationship between dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters and RP in patients undergoing 3DCRT. Materials and Methods: DVHs of 41 lung cancer patients treated with 3DCRT were evaluated with respect to the development of grade ${\geq}2$ RP by excluding gross tumor volume (GTV) and planned target volume (PTV) from total (TL) and ipsilateral (IPSI) lung volume. Results: Were admitted statistically significant for p<0.05. Conclusions: The cut-off values for V5, V13, V20, V30, V45 and the mean dose of TL-GTV; and V13, V20,V30 and the mean dose of TL-PTV were statistically significant for the development of Grade ${\geq}2$ RP. No statistically significant results related to the development of Grade ${\geq}2$ RP were observed for the ipsilateral lung and the evaluation of PTV volume. A controlled and careful evaluation of the dose-volume histograms is important to assess Grade ${\geq}2$ RP development of the lung cancer patients treated with concurrent chemo-radiotherapy. In the light of the obtained data it can be said that RP development may be avoided by the proper analysis of the dose volume histograms and the application of optimal treatment plans.

      • Poster Session : PS 0612 ; Others ; Successful Intracavitary tPA Treatment of Gastrocnemius Intramuscular Hematoma in a Patient Following Anticoagulant Therapy with Warfarin: Case Report

( Muge Bilge ),( Zafer Unsal Coskun ),( Cengiz Cakan ),( Mine Adas ),( Serife Aysen Helvaci ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Warfarin is an anticoagulant used in a variety of clinical indications and may rarely cause severe bleeding that can be life-threatening.Although intramuscular bleeding frequently occure secondary to trauma,it can be induced in cases that cause bleeding tendency.Hematoma is often treated with conventional methods. However, surgical decompression can also be applied.Case Report;A 71 year old male patient admitted to our clinic with increased skin temperature, swelling and redness on the right leg.Warfarin was the only drug in the present treatment that cause bleeding tendency.During the physical examination, swelling, skin redness, echymosis, decreased motility, pain with palpation and tenderness were deteceted on the gastrocnemius location of the right leg. There was no other fi nding in the rest systemic examination.Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the right lower limb of the patient showed a mass lesion on posteromedial of right cruris, displacing the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle laterally(fig 1).Considering the datas of the performed imaging methods and using an ultrasonography-assisted GF-multipurpose drainage pigtale catheter, intracavitary administration of 5 mg tPA and 25 cc serum sale mixture was performed.Subsequently the catheter was clamped for a 25-30 minutes time and spontaneous drainage occured. After the intervention,a compression bandage was done with elastic bandage in order to avoid reloading of the cavity.Ultrasonographic control was performed after each step of the intervention to check a possible presence of an organised hematoma and intervention went on till there was no liquid rest in the location of hematoma. The total recovery was also proved by magnetic resonance imaging after total clinical recovery was deteceted (fig2).This case report represents that the addition of fi brinolytics to the standard drainage techniques is a safe and effective therapy method in organised hematoma as well as abscess complicated with surgery.

The Hebrew Biblical Bérit in Light of Ancient Near Eastern Covenants and Treaties

        Ada Taggar-Cohen 한국신학정보연구원 2020 Canon&Culture Vol.14 No.2

A short historical survey of scholarly interpretations of the concept of bérit ברית in the Hebrew Bible is offered in this article as a background to understanding the urge for different interpretations offered by scholars in recent decades. The survey starts with a detailed discussion of the contribution of Mendenhall’s interpretations of the biblical covenant in light of legal treaties from the Ancient Near East during the second millennium BCE. Those mainly Hittite international treaties opened the door for a new interpretation of the biblical texts in light of legal rather than just religious relations between the God of Israel and his people. The second part of the article shows how the Hittite treaty-documents have led to new interpretations of the Hebrew Bible covenant, based on ancient Near Eastern legal-political as well as cultic material, and how it may still be used in current research, together with Mesopotamian-Akkadian documents, which were also brought into that discussion. The major dispute between scholars today is the attempt to pose an historical measurement on the possible connection between the Hittite legal documents titled in Hittite išḫiul- which are dated to the second half of the second millennium, and the Akkadian documents titled adê mainly of the first millennium BCE, with the Hebrew Bible texts drawn during the first millennium.

Review : Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction for Microbial Growth Kinetics of Mixed Culture System

        ( Ada Cotto ),( Jessica K. Looper ),( Linda C. Mota ),( Ahjeong Son ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2015 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.25 No.11

Microbial growth kinetics is often used to optimize environmental processes owing to its relation to the breakdown of substrate (contaminants). However, the quantification of bacterial populations in the environment is difficult owing to the challenges of monitoring a specific bacterial population within a diverse microbial community. Conventional methods are unable to detect and quantify the growth of individual strains separately in the mixed culture reactor. This work describes a novel quantitative PCR (qPCR)-based genomic approach to quantify each species in mixed culture and interpret its growth kinetics in the mixed system. Batch experiments were performed for both single and dual cultures of Pseudomonas putida and Escherichia coli K12 to obtain Monod kinetic parameters (μmax and Ks). The growth curves and kinetics obtained by conventional methods (i.e., dry weight measurement and absorbance reading) were compared with that obtained by qPCR assay. We anticipate that the adoption of this qPCR-based genomic assay can contribute significantly to traditional microbial kinetics, modeling practice, and the operation of bioreactors, where handling of complex mixed cultures is required.

      • Assessment of damages on a RC building after a big fire

        Ada, Mehmet,Sevim, Baris,Yuzer, Nabi,Ayvaz, Yusuf Techno-Press 2018 Advances in concrete construction Vol.6 No.2

This paper presents a case study about the damages on the structural elements of a cast in place reinforced concrete (RC) building after a big fire which was able to be controlled after six hours. The fire broke off at the $2^{nd}$ basement floor of the building, which has five basements, one ground, and two normal floors. As a result of intensely stocked ignitable materials, it spread out to the all of the upstairs. In visual inspection, most of the typical fire damages were observed (such as spalling, net-like cracks, crumbled plasters, bared or visible reinforcement). Also, failures of the $2^{nd}$ basement columns were encountered. It has been concluded that the severity failures of the columns at the $2^{nd}$ basement caused utterly deformation of the building, which is responsible for the massive damages on the beam-column connections. All of the observed damages were categorized related to the types and presented separated regarding the floors. Besides to the visual inspection, the numerical analysis was run to verify the observed damaged on the building for columns, beams, and the connection regions. It is concluded from the study that several parameters such as duration of the fire, level of the temperature influence on the damages to the RC building. Also, it is highlighted by the study that if the damaged building is considered on the overall structural system, it is not able to satisfy the minimum service requirements neither gravity loads nor earthquake conditions.
