Modeling for a Sustainable Electricity Supply in Uzbekistan

        Abdulla Ibragimov(Abdulla Ibragimov ),Elmurod Hoshimov(Elmurod Hoshimov ) 적정기술학회 2023 적정기술학회지(Journal of Appropriate Technology) Vol.9 No.3

For nations to achieve mobility as well as economic and social growth, a steady supply of electric power is crucial. Investments in capacity building and raising operational standards are necessary for the reliability and consistency of the delivery of electricity. A decision-making in the sector has become difficult for investors and policymakers, due to challenges associated with the electricity sector including delays in generation and infrastructure construction, R&D, natural gas supply, fluctuations in demand and environmental concerns. Additionally, the power sector is dynamic and perpetually changes overtime. Electricity supply and demand is highly complex and dynamic in Uzbekistan. Understanding the causal linkages between major system variables that exist Uzbekistan’s electricity system is crucial for making systematic and long-term policy decisions. This work proposes a computer simulation model based on system dynamics technique. The simulation outcomes revealed that investments in power generation capacity and efficiency enhancement are required in the country to provide a sustainable electricity.

Maximizing Strength of CKD – Stabilized Expansive Clayey Soil Using Natural Zeolite

        Abdulla A. Sharo,Fathi M. Shaqour,Jomana M. Ayyad 대한토목학회 2021 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.25 No.4

The influence of pozzolanic materials on calcium-based soil stabilization technique has recently attracted researchers’ attention as such materials may catalyze the occurrence of pozzolanic reactions due to their high SiO2 and AL2O3 content. In this study, the effect of adding natural zeolite, which is a common pozzolanic material, on soil stabilized with cement kiln dust (CKD) is investigated. The optimal CKD content was determined by conducting tests on soil treated with percentages of CKD (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10%, and 12%), and then, the optimal CKD treatment was applied on soil replaced by different zeolite percentages (1%, 3%, 5%, 10%, and 15%). Atterberg limits, swelling, California bearing ratio and unconfined compression tests were performed on all samples to evaluate the performance of additives in stabilization. Unconfined compression test samples were cured for 0, 7, 14 and 28 days to study the effect of time. Addition of CKD resulted in reduction of soil swelling and a significant increase in the long-term strength to an optimum of 10% that resulted in 3-folds of strength value higher than the based soil. Addition of 15% natural zeolite to the optimized CKD stabilized soil, caused 21% increase of strength higher than that with CKD optimized soil, however the swelling is only slightly reduced.

Vol.8 No.1

Status, Biodiversity, and Ecosystem Services of Seagrass Habitats Within the Coral Triangle in the Western Pacific Ocean

        Abdulla- Al-Asif,Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal,Hadi Hamli,Mohd Hanafi Idris,Geoffery James Gerusu,Johan Ismail,Md. Khurshid Alam Bhuiyan,Muyassar H. Abualreesh,Najiah Musa,Mohd Effendy Abd Wahid,Manoranjan M 한국해양과학기술원 2022 Ocean science journal Vol.57 No.2

Area of the Coral Triangle (CT), namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste, comprises 5.7 million km2 of the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the most bio-diverse marine eco-regions on the planet, as well as a global hotspot for seagrass species. Many sea creatures of this eco-region rely on the seagrass ecosystem, especially dugong species extensively (a total number of 2279 individuals), sea turtles (4–6 species), benthic organisms, and fish. Apart from these ecological services, carbon sequestration (2.6 billion Mg CO2 storage) by the seagrass ecosystem is considerably higher in comparison to terrestrial vegetation. In this paper, we scrutinized previously acknowledged seagrass species distribution, the associated fauna in seagrass meadows, the total carbon sequestration in the Coral Triangle, past and present research conducted on seagrass and other aspects, and major threats to seagrass ecosystems within this biogeographic region. Depending on their different locations, the six CT countries have a minimum of 10 to a maximum of 19 seagrass species that belong to four distinct families (Hydrocharitaceae, Cymodoceaceae, Zosteraceae, and Ruppiaceae) and cover almost 58,550.63‬ km2. While a total of 21 species of seagrass have been found throughout this eco-region, very little research has been conducted to assess the overall status of the ecosystems within this eco-region. Seagrass ecosystems and services from these habitats within the Coral Triangle are also associated with 100 million human inhabitants, who are supported directly or indirectly by the resources of this ecosystem. These inhabitants may cause considerable disturbance to seagrass ecosystems. For the long-term sustainable management and conservation of these ecosystems, two types of threats, namely local human activities and global transboundary issues including climate change, have been identified and need to be taken into consideration. In terms of human activities, local threats include water quality deterioration due to sewage and pollutant discharge, agricultural activities mainly from palm oil plantations, over-exploitation of seagrass-associated resources, sediment runoff, and destructive fishing practices. Global threats comprise macro and microplastics, sea-level rise due to climate change, global warming, and acidification. Further study of social, cultural, and economic interaction between the local inhabitants and seagrass ecosystems is highly recommended for assessing the ecological and economic contribution of this habitat to the human societies of the Coral Triangle. Despite their importance for human food services and the maintenance of the food web for marine and coastal animals, human activities have a negative impact on seagrass ecosystems around the world, particularly in the Coral Triangle.

Givers and Receivers of Peer Feedback: An Analysis of Korean EFL Students’ Writing

2022 Studies in English education Vol.27 No.2

Peer feedback has become recognized as an essential component of EFL writing class because it is believed to aid the development of writing quality. The purpose of the present study is to broaden our understanding of peer feedback in EFL writing settings by closely examining what and how different skill level Korean EFL students perform and respond to peer feedback. Twenty each of low- and high-level university students participated in the study. This study adopted both quantitative and qualitative approaches to analyze peer partners’ reviews and responses to them. The study found that the low-level students received more comments than did the high-level. With feedback types given, direct corrections of the mistakes in the essays were predominantly performed, and comments on the local aspect of an essay exceeded those on the global aspect in both levels. With respect to responses to feedback, both groups accepted more local aspect comments than global ones, and particularly low-level students accepted more local comments than did the high-level. The high-level students took a more selective approach to peer feedback than did the low-level students. Overall, low-level students incorporated more the peer’s comments into their subsequent revisions than did high-level students. Some pedagogical implications are made.

The tryptophan utilization concept in pregnancy

2014 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.57 No.4

The decrease in maternal plasma total (free + albumin-bound) tryptophan (Trp) during the third pregnancy trimester is attributed to induction of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO). When measured, free [Trp] is increased because of albumin depletion and non-esterified fatty acid elevation. The Trp depletion concept in pregnancy is therefore not supported because of incorrect interpretation of changes in Trp disposition and also for not addressing mouse strain differences in Trp-related responses and potential inhibition of Trp transport by the IDO inhibitor 1-methyl tryptophan. Application of the Trp utilization concept in pregnancy offers several physiological advantages favoring fetal development and successful outcome, namely provision of Trp for fetal protein synthesis and growth, serotonin for signaling pathways, kynurenic acid for neuroprotection, quinolinic acid for NAD+ synthesis, and other kynurenines for suppression of T cell responses. An excessive increase in Trp availability could compromise pregnancy by undermining T cell suppression, e.g., in pre-eclampsia.

Analytical Coexistence Benchmark for Assessing the Utmost Interference Tolerated by IEEE 802.20

Abdulla, Mouhamed,Shayan, Yousef R. Korea Information Processing Society 2011 Journal of information processing systems Vol.7 No.1

Whether it is crosstalk, harmonics, or in-band operation of wireless technologies, interference between a reference system and a host of offenders is virtually unavoidable. In past contributions, a benchmark has been established and considered for coexistence analysis with a number of technologies including FWA, UMTS, and WiMAX. However, the previously presented model does not take into account the mobility factor of the reference node in addition to a number of interdependent requirements regarding the link direction, channel state, data rate and system factors; hence limiting its applicability for the MBWA (IEEE 802.20) standard. Thus, over diverse modes, in this correspondence we analytically derived the greatest aggregate interference level tolerated for high-fidelity transmission tailored specifically for the MBWA standard. Our results, in the form of benchmark indicators, should be of particular interest to peers analyzing and researching RF coexistence scenarios with this new protocol.

      • What Givers and Receivers do during the Peer Feedback Process : An analysis of Korean EFL students' writing at different proficiency levels

Vol.2020 No.10

Peer feedback which is believed to have the potential to develop students’ writing skills has been recognized as an essential component in EFL as well as ESL writing classes. With its growing application to writing classrooms, an increasing number of studies have conducted from different perspectives to investigate mainly its effects on student writers’ writing skills. However, relatively little research has tackled on what and how the feedback givers and receivers perform during the course of giving and receiving peer feedback. The purpose of the present study is to broaden our understanding of peer feedback in EFL writing settings by closely examining what and how Korean EFL students at different proficiency levels perform, and respond to, peer feedback. Twenty-two low- and 22 high-intermediate university students (44 students in total) participated in the study. This study adapted both quantitative and qualitative approaches. First, the students’ feedback on the essays was analyzed in two aspects: global aspect (e.g., content and organization) and local aspect (e.g., word choice, grammar, and punctuations). Second, the students’ revisions based on peer feedback were scrutinized to appreciate how feedback effected the subsequent revision of the essay. Finally, interviews were also implemented to understand the receivers’ judgement on peer feedback. The findings of the study will offer some pedagogical implications.
