Effects of Quercetin on Lipid and Protein Damage in the Liver of Streptozotocin-Induced Experimental Diabetic Rats

        Abdulhalim Senyigit,Sinem Durmus,Eda Buyukcolpan Mirzatas,Nural Pastacı Ozsobacı,Remise Gelisgen,Matem Tuncdemir,Dervis Ozcelik,Gonul Simsek,Hafize Uzun 한국식품영양과학회 2019 Journal of medicinal food Vol.22 No.1

Quercetin (QR) is part of a subclass of flavonoids called flavonols. We aimed to investigate the effect of QR on malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in the liver of diabetic rats. We compared four groups of male adult Wistar albino rats: a control group, an untreated diabetic group, diabetic groups treated with QR, and QR group. Diabetes was induced by a single injection of streptozotocin (STZ) (50 mg/kg). Animals were kept in standard condition. On the 31st day of the study, the liver tissue was removed for biochemical parameters and histopathological evaluations. In an untreated diabetic group, liver MDA and AOPP levels were significantly higher than all groups. QR treatment significantly decreased the increased MDA, AOPP levels, and increased the decreased GSH-Px enzyme activity in liver tissues. The QR-treated rats in the diabetic group showed an improved histological appearance. Lesser vesicular vacuolization and fibrotic areas were observed in the QR-treated diabetic group than in the diabetic group. The STZ-induced liver injury is associated with oxidative stress, and coadministration of QR may reduce this damage effectively in a rat model. Our results are also supported by morphological improvement in liver tissue. Therefore, we think QR may be effective in treating hyperglycemia and oxidative damage in diabetes.

      • The effect of different earthquake ground motion levels on the performance of steel structures in settlements with different seismic hazards

Ercan Işık,İbrahim Baran Karaşin,Abdulhalim Karaşin 국제구조공학회 2022 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.84 No.1

The updated Turkish Building Earthquake Code has been significantly renovated and expanded compared to previous seismic design codes. The use of earthquake ground motion levels with different probabilities of exceedance is one of the major advances in structural mechanics with the current code. This study aims to investigate the earthquake performance of steel structure in settlements with different seismic hazards for various earthquake ground motion levels. It is focused on earthquake and structural parameters for four different ground motion levels with different probabilities of exceedance calculated according to the location of the structure by the updated Turkish Hazard Map. For this purpose, each of the seven different geographical regions of Turkey which has the same seismic zone in the previous earthquake hazard map has been considered. Earthquake parameters, horizontal design elastic spectra obtained and comparisons were made for all different ground motion levels for the seven different locations, respectively. Structural analyzes for a sample steel structure were carried out using pushover analysis by using the obtained design spectra. It has been determined that the different ground motion levels significantly affect the expected target displacements of the structure for performance criteria. It is noted that the different locations of the same earthquake zone in the previous code with the same earthquake-building parameters show significant variations due to the micro zoning properties of the updated seismic design code. In addition, the main innovations of the updated code were discussed.

A new approach to determine the moment-curvature relationship of circular reinforced concrete columns

Naci Caglar,Aydin Demir,Hakan Ozturk,Abdulhalim Akkaya 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2015 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.15 No.3

To be able to understand the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) members, cross sectional behavior should be known well. Cross sectional behavior can be best evaluated by moment-curvature relationship. On a reinforced concrete cross section moment-curvature relationship can be best determined by both experimentally or numerically with some complicated iteration methods. Making these experiments or iterations manually is very difficult and not practical. The aim of this study is to research the efficiency of Neural Networks (NN) as a more secure and robust method to obtain the moment-curvature relationship of circular RC columns. It is demonstrated that the NN based model is highly successful to determine the moment-curvature relationship of circular reinforced concrete columns.

Preparation of asymmetric polysulfone/polyimide blended membranes for CO_2 separation

        Sikander Rafiq,Zakaria Man,Saikat Maitra,Abdulhalim Maulud,Farooq Ahmad,Nawshad Muhammad 한국화학공학회 2011 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.28 No.10

Asymmetric Flat sheet polysulfone-polyimide (PSF-PI) blended polymeric membranes (with PI content from 5-20%) have been fabricated following phase inversion technique. The membranes have been thoroughly characterized by the measurement of porosity, mechanical properties and also by SEM, FTIR and DSC analyses. With the increase in the PI content, the mechanical properties of the membranes, like Young’s modulus, tensile strength and elongation at break, increased. SEM investigations revealed that the surfaces of fabricated blended membranes possessed adequate homogeneity and their cross-sections showed non-porous top and diminutive porous substructure. From DSC analyses it has been observed that different compositions of the blended membranes exhibited single glass transition temperatures, implying proper compatibility of the polymers. The permeance of CO_2 and CH_4 through the membrane increased with the increase in PI content and it gradually decreased with the increase in the feed pressure in the range of 2-10 bar. Under the present investigation, the membrane with 20% PI content exhibited the maximum selectivity for the separation of CO_2 /CH-4 gas mixes.

Quality of Life in Older Adults with Cochlear Implantation: Can It Be Equal to That of Healthy Older Adults?

        Tokat Taskin,Müderris Togay,Bozkurt Ergul Basaran,Ergun Uğurtan,Aysel Abdulhalim,Catli Tolgahan 대한청각학회 2021 Journal of Audiology & Otology Vol.25 No.3

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the audiologic results after cochlear implantation (CI) in older patients and the degree of improvement in their quality of life (QoL).Subjects and Methods: Patients over 65 years old who underwent CI at implant center in Bozyaka Training and Research Hospital were included in this study (n=54; 34 males and 20 females). The control group was patient over 65 years old with normal hearing (n=54; 34 males and 20 females). We administered three questionnaires [World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF), World Health Organization Quality of Life-OLD (WHOQOL-OLD)], and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) to evaluate the QoL, CIrelated effects on activities of daily life, and social activities in all the subjects. Moreover, correlations between speech recognition and the QoL scores were evaluated. The duration of implant use and comorbidities were also examined as potential factors affecting QoL.Results: The patients had remarkable improvements (the mean score of postoperative speech perception 75.7%) in speech perception after CI. The scores for the WHOQOL-OLD and WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire responses were similar in both the study and control groups, except those for a two subdomains (social relations and social participation). The patients with longer-term CI had higher scores than those with short-term CI use. In general, the changes in GDS scores were not significant (<i>p</i><0.05).Conclusions: The treatment of hearing loss with CI conferred significant improvement in patient’s QoL (p<0.01). The evaluation of QoL can provide multidimensional insights into a geriatric patient’s progress and, therefore, should be considered by audiologists.

Effect of Honey on 50% Complement Hemolytic Activity in Infants with Protein Energy Malnutrition: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study

Mamdouh Abdulmaksoud Abdulrhman,May Fouad Nassar,Hisham Waheed Mostafa,Zakaria Abdulhalim El-Khayat,Marwa Wageh Abu El Naga 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.5

Protein energy malnutrition (PEM) is associated with a significant impairment of cell-mediated immunity and complement system, which may be responsible for the high incidence of infections among these patients. This study was designed to examine the effect of honey, as a natural substance, on the 50% complement hemolytic activity (CH50) in patients with PEM. Thirty patients with PEM and 20 healthy infants serving as controls participated in this study. The patients were randomized to receive either honey (group 1) or placebo (group 2), in addition to conventional nutritional rehabilitation therapy. Measurements of weight, midarm circumference, skin fold thickness, serum albumin, and CH50 were done for all patients before and after 2 weeks of rehabilitation. Before nutritional rehabilitation, the CH50 was significantly lower in the PEM groups compared with the control. However, after rehabilitation, the CH50 increased significantly in both PEM groups, compared with the pre-interventional state and with the controls. Moreover, the rise of CH50 was significantly more in the honey group compared with the placebo. On the other hand, the improvement in the anthropometric measures and serum albumin did not differ significantly between the honey and placebo groups after rehabilitation. Thus honey supplementation in patients with PEM increased the level of CH50. Whether this would have an effect on the frequency and severity of infections in patients with PEM needs further studies.
