        Effects of meal processing of black soldier fly on standardized amino acids digestibility in pigs

        The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of incorporating black soldier fly (BSF) larvae and its processed form as an alternative source of protein to fish meal (FM) on the digestibility of amino acids (AA) in weaned pigs. Four cannulated pigs with an initial bodyweight of 13.25 ± 0.25 kg and aged 30 days were subjected to a 4 × 4 Latin square design with three treatments, as well as a nitrogen-free treatment. The diets used for each treatment consisted of a FM diet, a diet containing BSF larvae meal (BSFM), and a diet containing extruded BSF (BSFE). The study was conducted over four stages, with a total duration of 28 days. The apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of protein was higher in the FM treatment compared with the BSFM. Among essential AA, the AID of Arg, His, Leu, and Thr were higher in the FM compared with the BSFM and BSFE. A greater AID of Ile and Phe was observed in pigs in the FM treatment compared with the BSFM. The average AA digestibility did not show any difference between treatments. Among non-essential AA, the AID of Ala (p = 0.054) and Glu (p = 0.064) tended to be increased in the FM compared with the BSFM. Among essential AA, the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of Arg, His, Ile, and Leu were higher in the FM compared with the BSFM. Among non-essential AA, the SID of Cys (p = 0.074) tended to be increased in the FM compared with the BSFM. In conclusion, the processing and thermal conditioning techniques utilized for BSF larvae meal showed a tendency for increased AA digestibility. Therefore, when formulating a diet, it is important to take into account the difference in AA digestibility between FM and BSFM.

        GIS-based evaluation of geomorphic response to tectonic activity in Makran Mountain Range, SE of Iran

        This paper investigates the impact of active tectonics on the geomorphic processes and landscape evolution of Makran Mountain range at southeastern of Iran using spatial analysis of geomorphic indices. We documented how topography and morphology are influenced by active tectonic deformation. Quantitative analysis of the geomorphological response to active tectonics within the study area have been done using drainage basin asymmetry factor (Af), drainage basin shape index (Bs), drainage density index (Dd), hypsometric integral (Hi), mean axial slope of the channel (MASC), topographic roughness (STD), mountain-front sinuosity (Smf) and valley floor width-valley height ratio (Vf). The obtained results from these indices were combined to yield an index of active tectonics (Iat). The indicative values of this index are consistent with the landforms and geology of the study area. The morphometric data (quantitative analysis of geomorphic indices) provides evidence of relative variation in the tectonic activity of the study area and related landforms. The utilization of geomorphic parameters exhibits decrease in the geomorphic response of the landforms from north to south. Also, the Ghasr-e-Ghand fault, based on the front-based indices has an important role in uplift of the middle part of the study area. Based upon the results of this study we suggest a southward tectonic vergence for the Makran Mountain Range.

        Flying Capacitor DTC Drive with Reductions in Common Mode Voltage and Stator Overvoltage

        This paper gives a detailed analysis of the direct torque control (DTC) strategy in a five-level drive and proposes a 24-sector switching table. The known problems in low-voltage drives such as bearings currents and an overvoltage phenomenon which leads to premature failure are reviewed and the occurrence of these problems in medium voltage drives has been investigated. Then a solutions to these problems is presented and the switching table to deal with these problems is modified. Simulation and experimental results on a 3㎸A prototype confirm the proposed solution. In implementing the above strategy a TMS320F2812 is used.

        Fabrication of antifouling mixed matrix NF membranes by embedding sodium citrate surfactant modified-iron oxide nanoparticles

        PES-based nanofiltration membranes were prepared by phase inversion method. Fe3O4 nanoparticles with a constant concentration and sodium citrate in different concentration were incorporated into the PES. The membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), EDX dot mapping and Atomic force microscope (AFM) analysis. Physico-chemical, antifouling properties, and separation performance of the fabricated membranes were investigated by the contact angle, pure water flux (PWF), Na2SO4 rejection and flux recovery ratio (FRR%). The membrane porosity and mean pore size enhanced for the modified membranes compared the bare membrane. The PWF sharply improved from 16 L/m2h in the bare membrane to 47 L/m2h at 0.5 wt% Fe3O4 and 0.3 wt% sodium citrate (M5). The highest salt rejection obtained was 68%, while it was 61% for the bare membrane. Better dispersion of Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the casting solution with outstanding antifouling properties was observed.

        Preparation of mixed matrix PES-based nanofiltration membrane filled with PANI-co-MWCNT composite nanoparticles

        Mixed matrix polyethersulfone/PANI-co-MWCNTs composite nanoparticle nanofiltration membrane was prepared by casting solution technique. Polyvinylpyrrolidone was also used as membrane pore former in membrane fabrication. The effect of polyaniline-co-multi walled carbon nanotubes composite nanoparticle concentration in the casting solution on membrane structure and performance was investigated. Scanning optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, FTIR analysis, porosity, mean pore size, contact angle, water content, NaCl/Na2SO4 rejection, water flux, tensile strength measurements and 3D surface image were also carried out in membrane characterization. SOM images showed nanoparticle agglomeration at high additive loading ratio. SEM images showed the membrane sub-layer porosity and thickness were changed by use of nanoparticles in membrane matrix. The membrane water content, porosity and pore size were increased by increase of nanoparticle concentration, except for 1%wt. Use of PANI-co- MWCNT nanoparticles in the membrane matrix caused a decrease of membrane contact angle from 63.43 to 46.76o. Salt rejection and water flux were improved initially by increase of nanoparticle concentration up to 0.1%wt and then decreased by more additive concentration. In addition, the membranes tensile strength was reduced by increase of PANI-co-MWCNTs composite nanoparticle concentration. 3D surface images showed a smoother surface for mixed matrix membrane filled with 0.1wt% PANI-co-MWCNTs. Modified membrane containing 0.1wt% composite nanoparticles showed better performance compared to others.

        Evidence Gap on the Prevalence of Non-conventional Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes in Iran

        Objectives: Robust scientific evidence exists about the role of non-conventional risk factors in type 2 diabetes worldwide. The current epidemiological pattern of the disease in Iran suggests a precipitating role for these non-conventional risk factors. This review was performed to examine the research evidence suggesting a higher prevalence of non-conventional type 2 diabetes risk factors in Iran. Methods: MeSH keywords were applied to search several databases, including PUBMED, MEDLINE, AMED, EMBASE, Iran DOC, and the Scientific Information Database without a time limit frominception to September 2011. The quality of the noninterventional and population-based studies on Iranians included in these databases was assessed by the authors and any disagreement was resolved with consensus. Results: The literature search yielded 1847 publications, of which 62 were included in this study after eliminating non-relevant and overlapping papers. No study was found that verified a higher prevalence of the non-conventional type 2 diabetes risk factors in the Iranian population. Conclusion: The identified evidence gap about the role of prominent nonconventional risk factors of type 2 diabetes in the Iranian population could be a major caveat in the application of an evidence-based approach to endorse or reject existing hypothesis about these risk factors. Studies on the prevalence of non-conventional biomarkers of type 2 diabetes among Iranians could be a promising area of research.

        Insulin Resistance and Serum Levels of Interleukin-17 and Interleukin-18 in Normal Pregnancy

        We performed this study to evaluate the role of Interleukin-17 (IL-17) and Interleukin-18 (IL-18) in insulin resistance during normal pregnancy. This descriptive cross sectional study was carried out on 97 healthy pregnant women including 32, 25, and 40 individuals in the first, second, and third trimesters, respectively, and on 28 healthy non pregnant women between the autumn of 2012 and the spring of 2013. We analyzed the serum concentrations of IL-17 and IL-18 by using the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Insulin resistance was measured by homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance equation. No significant differences between the demographic data of the pregnant and non pregnant groups were observed. Insulin resistant in pregnant women was significantly higher than the controls (p=0.006). Serum IL-17 concentration was significantly different in non pregnant women and pregnant women in all gestational ages (p<0.05). Serum IL-18 level was significantly lower in subjects with first, second, and third trimesters of pregnancy in compared to non pregnant women (p<0.05). No significant correlations were found between serum IL-17 and IL-18 levels with insulin resistance (r=0.08, p=0.34 vs. r=0.01, p=0.91, respectively). Our data suggested that IL-17 and IL-18 do not appear to attribute greatly to pregnancy deduced insulin resistance during normal pregnancy.

        Effects of Endurance Training on the Serum Levels of Tumour Necrosis Factor-α and Interferon-γ in Sedentary Men

        Physical activity could be considered one of the factors thataffect the immune system status and function. To find the relationbetween exercise and cytokines, we examined the possibleeffects of an 8-week endurance training program on theserum levels of cytokines, including tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) in sedentarymen. A total of 30 healthy young male volunteers wererandomly divided into an endurance training group and a controlgroup. The training group followed a specific exerciseprotocol (running on a treadmill for 15∼30 min at 50∼70%maximal heart rate) for 8 weeks and the control group did notparticipate in any exercise program. Venous blood sampleswere collected from both the groups 24 h before and 24 hand 48 h after the exercise. Repeated ANOVA was used forstatistical purposes. The serum levels of TNF-α and IFN-γwere determined by ELISA. Significant (p<0.05) andnon-significant (p>0.05) decreases were observed in theserum levels of IFN-γ and TNF-α, respectively, after the8-week endurance training program. Our findings indicatedthat an 8-week endurance exercise may affect the serum levelsof some inflammatory cytokines, suggesting the beneficialrole of this training protocol in elderly population andpeople with certain conditions (inflammation of the vertebraeor other inflammatory diseases).

        Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) nanoparticles in nanofiltration membrane with enhanced separation performance and anti-fouling properties

        Cuprous oxide nanoparticles (Cu2O) were synthesized by electrochemical method and as an add-on toconstruct polyethersulfone (PES) nanofiltration (NF) membranes. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM),3D surface images, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were utilizedto indicate membranes and nanoparticles. Membranes were evaluated by tests of water content, porosity, contact angle,salt rejection, water flux and average pore size measurements. The results show the enhancement of surface hydrophilicityby the addition of Cu2O nanoparticles. The highest unalloyed water flux was obtained by membrane, including0.05 wt% Cu2O nanoparticles, and the highest rejection was revealed by a membrane containing 2 wt% Cu2Onanoparticles. The Na2SO4 rejection reached 66.94%, which was significantly higher than the bare PES membrane. Thisperformance may be owing to increased Na2SO4 adsorption sites. The heavy metals rejection of CrSO4, Pb(NO3)2, andCu (NO3)2 increased 79.38%, 85.08%, and 81% for the M5 membrane, respectively, while it was 45%, 46%, and 49% forbare membrane, respectively. Furthermore, the flux of unalloyed water increased from 9.78 L/m2·h on the pure PESmembrane to 36.78 L/m2·h on the M1 membrane. The decrease of surface roughness and also the increase of hydrophilicgroups improved the antifouling properties of the membranes.
