Modelling of aluminium foam sandwich panels

Vincenzo D’Alessandro,Giuseppe Petrone,Sergio De Rosa,Francesco Franco 국제구조공학회 2014 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.13 No.4

applications thanks to the excellent combination of mechanical properties, high strength and stiffness, with functional ones, thermo-acoustic isolation and vibration damping. These properties strongly depend on the density of the foam, the morphology of the pores, the type (open or closed cells) and the size of the gas bubbles enclosed in the solid material. In this paper, the vibrational performances of two classes of sandwich panels with an Alulight R foam core are studied. Experimental tests, in terms of frequency response function and modal analysis, are performed in order to investigate the effect of different percentage of porosity in the foam, as well as the effect of the random distribution of the gas bubbles. Experimental results are used as a reference for developing numerical models using finite element approach. Firstly, a sensitivity analysis is performed in order to obtain a limit-but-bounded dynamic response, modelling the foam core as a homogeneous one. The experimental-numerical correlation is evaluated in terms of natural frequencies and mode shapes. Afterwards, an update of the previous numerical model is presented, in which the core is not longer modelled as homogeneous. Mass and stiffness are randomly distributed in the core volume, exploring the space of the eigenvectors.

Clinical Utility of Fluid Biomarker in Depressive Disorder

        Alessandro Serretti(Alessandro Serretti ) 대한정신약물학회 2022 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.20 No.4

Major depressive disorders are ranked as the single largest contributor to non-fatal health loss and biomarkers could largely improve our routine clinical activity by predicting disease course and guiding treatment. However there is still a dearth of valid biomarkers in the field of psychiatry. The initial assumption that a single biomarker can capture the myriad of complex processes proved to be naive. The purpose of this paper is to critically review the field and to illustrate the possible practical application for routine clinical care. Biomarkers derived from DNA analysis are the ones that have received the most attention. Other potential candidates include circulating transcription products, proteins, and inflammatory markers. DNA polygenic risk scores proved to be useful in other fields of medicine and preliminary results suggest that they could be useful both as risk and diagnostic biomarkers also in depression and for the choice of treatment. A number of other possible fluid biomarkers are currently under investigation for diagnosis, outcome prediction, staging, and stratification of interventions, however research is still needed before they can be used for routine clinical care. When available, clinicians may be able to receive a lab report with detailed information about disease risk, outcome prediction, and specific indications about preferred treatments.

Nutraceuticals as Modulators of Immune Function: A Review of Potential Therapeutic Effects

        Alessandro Medoro,Sergio Davinelli,Alessandro Colletti,Valentina Di Micoli,Elisa Grandi,Federica Fogacci,Giovanni Scapagnini,Arrigo F.G. Cicero 한국식품영양과학회 2023 Preventive Nutrition and Food Science Vol.28 No.2

Dietary supplementation with nutraceuticals can promote optimal immune system activation, modulating different pathways that enhance immune defenses. Therefore, the immunity-boosting effects of nutraceuticals encompass not only immunomodulatory but also antioxidant, antitumor, antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, with therapeutic effects against diverse pathological conditions. However, the complexity of the pathways that regulate the immune system, numerous mechanisms of action, and heterogeneity of the immunodeficiencies, and subjects treated make their application in the clinical field difficult. Some nutraceuticals appear to safely improve immune system function, particularly by preventing viral and bacterial infections in specific groups, such as children, the elderly, and athletes, as well as in frail patients, such as those affected by autoimmune diseases, chronic diseases, or cancer. Several nutraceuticals, such as vitamins, mineral salts, polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, many types of phytocompounds, and probiotic strains, have the most consolidated evidence in humans. In most cases, further large and long-term randomized clinical trials are needed to confirm the available preliminary positive data.

Towards a digital twin realization of the blade system design study wind turbine blade

        Alessandro Baldassarre,Alessandro Ceruti,Daniel N. Valyou,Pier Marzocca 한국풍공학회 2019 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.28 No.5

This paper describes the application of a novel virtual prototyping methodology to wind turbine blade design. Numeric modelling data and experimental data about turbine blade geometry and structural/dynamical behaviour are combined to obtain an affordable digital twin model useful in reducing the undesirable uncertainties during the entire turbine lifecycle. Moreover, this model can be used to track and predict blade structural changes, due for example to structural damage, and to assess its remaining life. A new interactive and recursive process is proposed. It includes CAD geometry generation and finite element analyses, combined with experimental data gathered from the structural testing of a new generation wind turbine blade. The goal of the research is to show how the unique features of a complex wind turbine blade are considered in the virtual model updating process, fully exploiting the computational capabilities available to the designer in modern engineering. A composite Sandia National Laboratories Blade System Design Study (BSDS) turbine blade is used to exemplify the proposed process. Static, modal and fatigue experimental testing are conducted at Clarkson University Blade Test Facility. A digital model was created and updated to conform to all the information available from experimental testing. When an updated virtual digital model is available the performance of the blade during operation can be assessed with higher confidence.

FEASIBILITY STUDY OF AN INNOVATIVE URBAN ELECTRIC-HYBRID MICROCAR

        Alessandro Ferraris,Federico Micca,Alessandro Messana,Andrea Giancarlo Airale,Massimiliana Carello 한국자동차공학회 2019 International journal of automotive technology Vol.20 No.2

This paper presents the feasibility study of a new platform for electric-hybrid quadricycles, developed by addressing important concepts like passive safety and comfort, which often represent a shortcoming in this vehicle category. Starting from packaging of energy storage system and macroscopic subsystems as the main technological constraint, the study has been entirely developed in a virtual environment, with finite element verifications on preliminary models, and a subsequent cooperation phase between computer aided design and finite element analysis softwares, with a guideline for the main tests being that each could feasibly be carried out on a complete vehicle model in order to validate the original assumptions. The resulting design, with a body curb mass of less than 100 kg, was capable of integrating optimal static stiffness characteristics and crash performance, together with improved vehicle dynamics thanks to an innovative suspension archetype.

Analysis of an Airport Pavement Management System during the Implementation Phase

Alessandro Di Graziano,Eliana Ragusa,Valeria Marchetta,Antonio Palumbo 대한토목학회 2021 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.25 No.4

The study analyzes an airport pavement management system (APMS) during the implementation phase. After a report on the characteristic of an APMS and a literature review on its application all over the world, the research work focuses on a case of study related to one of the most relevant airports in Southern Italy. To define a maintenance program, the evaluation of data available relating to inventory data, pavement condition and performance curves is the essential prerequisite. The latter concern the identification of critical areas, in order to subsequently define the maintenance alternatives. The obtained findings concern the planning of M&R activities over the years. Depending on pre-established scenarios, the design choices are the result of the most profitable strategy among those technically admissible. The study highlights current limitations of the implemented APMS regarding data available. For this reason, subsequent studies will improve the system through the implementation of traffic and climate conditions data as well as the evaluation of collateral costs. Moreover, it is possible to confirm that the use of an APMS is important from the first phase of implementation, as it allows to simplify and rationalize some processes, even if it is still necessary to implement the database with further data, also to solve the inevitable approximations on the performance curves. Furthermore, the calibration of the latter will improve the maximization of network conditions and the cost / benefit ratio. Anyway, the paper provides useful information to practitioners for future applications, highlighting at the same time the research steps still to be taken to get a more efficient APMS.

Minimum reinforcement and ductility index of lightly reinforced concrete beams

Alessandro P. Fantilli,Bernardino Chiaia,Andrea Gorino 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2016 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.18 No.6

Nonlinear models, capable of taking into account all the phenomena involved in the cracking and in the failure of lightly reinforced concrete beams, are nowadays available for a rigorous calculation of the minimum reinforcement. To simplify the current approaches, a new procedure is proposed in this paper. Specifically, the ductility index, which is lower than zero for under-reinforced concrete beams in bending, is introduced. The results of a general model, as well as the data measured in several tests, reveal the existence of two linear relationships between ductility index, crack width, and the amount of steel reinforcement. The above relationships can be applied to a wide range of lightly reinforced concrete beams, regardless of the geometrical dimensions and of the mechanical properties of materials. Accordingly, if only a few tests are combined with this linear relationships, a new design-by-testing procedure can be used to calculate the minimum reinforcement, which guarantees both the control of cracking in service and the ductility at failure.
