      • Cytokine secreted by S100A9 via TLR4 in monocytes delays neutrophil apoptosis by inhibition of caspase 9/3 pathway

        Lee, N.R.,Park, B.S.,Kim, S.Y.,Gu, A.,Kim, D.H.,Lee, J.S.,Kim, I.S. Saunders Scientific Publications, W.B. Saunders ; 2016 Cytokine Vol.86 No.-

Dysregulation of neutrophil apoptosis causes pathogenesis and aggravation of allergy. S100A9 exists as one of the proteins in the neutrophils, triggering inflammatory responses by activating the immune cells. In this study, we investigated whether S100A9 affects constitutive neutrophil apoptosis by activating the monocytes in normal and allergic subjects. Supernatant from human monocytic THP-1 cells after treatment with S100A9 suppressed normal neutrophil apoptosis by inhibiting the activations of caspase 9 and caspase 3. S100A9 upregulated the release of MCP-1, IL-6, and IL-8 in THP-1 cells. An increase in cytokine was suppressed by CLI-095, a Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 inhibitor, PP2, a Src inhibitor, rottlerin, a PKCδ inhibitor, MAP kinase inhibitors, including PD98059, SB202190, and SP600125, and BAY-11-7085, an NF-κB inhibitor. Src, PKCδ, ERK½, p38 MAPK, and JNK were phosphorylated by S100A9. The phosphorylation of Src and PKCδ was suppressed by CLI-095, and the activation of ERK½, p38 MAPK, and JNK was inhibited by CLI-095, PP2, and rottlerin. S100A9 induced NF-κB activity, and the activation was suppressed by CLI-095, PP2, rottlerin, and MAPK kinase inhibitors. In normal and allergic subjects, supernatant from normal and allergic monocytes after stimulation with S100A9 suppressed normal and allergic neutrophil apoptosis, respectively; MCP-1, IL-6, and IL-8 in the supernatant was increased by S100A9. The cytokine secretion induced by S100A9 is related to TLR4, Src, PKCδ, ERK½, p38 MAPK, JNK, and NF-κB. Taken together, S100A9 induces anti-apoptotic effect on normal and allergic neutrophils by increasing cytokine secretion of monocytes. These findings may help us to better understand neutrophil apoptosis regulated by S100A9 and pathogenesis of allergic diseases.

      • Harmonic decomposition of two particle angular correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV

        ALICE Collaboration,Aamodt, K.,Abelev, B.,Abrahantes Quintana, A.,Adamova, D.,Adare, A.M.,Aggarwal, M.M.,Aglieri Rinella, G.,Agocs, A.G.,Agostinelli, A.,Aguilar Salazar, S.,Ahammed, Z.,Ahmad, N.,Ahmad North-Holland Pub. Co 2012 Physics letters: B Vol.708 No.3

Angular correlations between unidentified charged trigger (t) and associated (a) particles are measured by the ALICE experiment in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV for transverse momenta 0.25<pTt,a<15 GeV/c, where pTt>pTa. The shapes of the pair correlation distributions are studied in a variety of collision centrality classes between 0 and 50% of the total hadronic cross section for particles in the pseudorapidity interval |η|<1.0. Distributions in relative azimuth Δφ=φt-φa are analyzed for |Δη|=|ηt-ηa|>0.8, and are referred to as ''long-range correlations''. Fourier components VnΔ≤cos(nΔφ)> are extracted from the long-range azimuthal correlation functions. If particle pairs are correlated to one another through their individual correlation to a common symmetry plane, then the pair anisotropy VnΔ(pTt,pTa) is fully described in terms of single-particle anisotropies vn(pT) as VnΔ(pTt,pTa)=vn(pTt)vn(pTa). This expectation is tested for 1≤n≤5 by applying a global fit of all VnΔ(pTt,pTa) to obtain the best values vn{GF}(pT). It is found that for 2≤n≤5, the fit agrees well with data up to pTa~3-4 GeV/c, with a trend of increasing deviation as pTt and pTa are increased or as collisions become more peripheral. This suggests that no pair correlation harmonic can be described over the full 0.25<pT<15 GeV/c range using a single vn(pT) curve; such a description is however approximately possible for 2≤n≤5 when pTa<4 GeV/c. For the n=1 harmonic, however, a single v1(pT) curve is not obtained even within the reduced range pTa<4 GeV/c.

Influence of Ti Doping on the Critical Behavior and Magnetocaloric Effect in Disordered Ferromagnets La0.7Ba0.3Mn1−x Ti x O3

        Ho, T. A.,Phan, M. H.,Phuc, N. X.,Lam, V. D.,Phan, T. L.,Yu, S. C. Springer Science + Business Media 2016 Journal of electronic materials Vol.45 No.5

<P>The Ti-substitution influence on the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of La0.7Ba0.3Mn1-x Ti (x) O-3 (x = 0.05 and 0.1) was investigated. Based on Banerjee's criteria and Franco's universal curves, we proved the existence of a second-order magnetic phase transition in the samples. Using the modified Arrott plot method, we determined the critical parameters T (C) a parts per thousand 245 K, beta = 0.374 +/- A 0.013, gamma = 1.228 +/- A 0.045, and delta = 4.26 +/- A 0.03 for x = 0.05, and T (C) a parts per thousand 169 K, beta = 0.339 +/- A 0.001, gamma = 1.307 +/- A 0.003, and delta = 4.78 +/- A 0.02 for x = 0.1. With these critical values, the predictable scaling behavior of the M(H) data above and below T (C) proves that the calculated exponents are unambiguous and intrinsic. The values beta = 0.374 for x = 0.05 and beta = 0.339 for x = 0.1 suggest that the magnetic phase transition of the samples falls into the three-dimensional (3D) Heisenberg and 3D Ising universality classes, respectively, corresponding to short-range ferromagnetic (FM) order due to FM clusters in a wide temperature range even above T (C), as confirmed by electron spin resonance studies. In reference to the magnetocaloric effect around T (C), the magnetic entropy change reaches maximum values (|Delta S-max|) of about 4 and 3 J kg(-1) K-1 for x = 0.05 and 0.1, respectively, for a magnetic field change 50 kOe. Magnetic field dependencies of |Delta S-max| obey a power function |Delta S-max(H)| ae H (n) , where exponent values n = 0.59 and 0.61 for x = 0.05 and 0.1, respectively, were determined from the relation n = 1 + (beta-1)/(beta + gamma). The difference between the experimental n values and the theoretical value n = 2/3 of the mean field model is due to the presence of short-range FM order in the samples.</P>

        M. G. Haider,E. H. Chowdhury,M. A. H. N. A. Khan,M. T. Hossain,M. S. Rahman,송희종,M. M. Hossain 한국가금학회 2008 韓國家禽學會誌 Vol.35 No.4

The research work was carried out to study the pathogenesis covering the clinical signs, gross and histopathological lesions in different organs, and reisolation and identification of the organisms after experimental infection with the local isolate of Salmonella enterica serovar. enterica subspecies (S.) Pullorum at different time interval of the experiment during the period February 2006 to December 2006. One hundred pullets (seronegative to S. Pullorum of 12 weeks age were purchased and divided into 5 (A, B, C, D and E) groups and each group consisted of 20 birds. Four groups (A, B, C and D) were infected orally with a dose of 106 CFU, 107 CFU, 2 × 107 CFU, 108 CFU of S. Pullorum, respectively, and one group (E) was treated as uninfected control. The used methods were necropsy and histopathology, culture of bacteria, staining and biochemical test of Salmonella. Five birds from each group were randomly selected and sacrificed 1st week, 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks of post infection (PI). From all the groups, the bacteriological samples (crop, liver, lung, heart, spleen, bile duodenum, ceca and blood) were collected with pre enriched in buffered peptone water in sterile poly bags. Liver, lungs, heart, spleen, intestine, etc. were collected in 10% buffered-formalin for histopathological examination. No clinical signs, gross and histopathological lesions were found in control group and no S. Pullorum was reisolated. Clinical sign of experimentally infected with S. Pullorum in pullets were loss of appetite (100%), slight depression (75%), ruffled feathers (85%), diarrhea (60%) and loss of weight (100%) in chickens. The feed intake and body weight at different weeks after PI differed significantly (p<0.01) among the groups. Grossly, the highest recorded lesion was button-like ulcer in the ceca (80%) and the lowest was white nodules in lungs (1.25%). S. Pullorum were reisolated from crop (91.25%), liver (91.25%), lung (83.75%), heart (71.25%), spleen (87.75%), bile (33.25%), duodenum (92.50%), ceca (97.50%) and from different group of infection (61.25%). The highest microscopic findings were intestinal and cecal mucosa and submucosa exhibited infiltration of mononuclear cells and congestion (96.25%), and the lowest finding was nodule formation in the lungs (3.75%). The pattern of the disease production by local isolate of S. Pullorum in Bangladesh is almost similar with other isolates in different countries. Evaluation of the zoonotic potential of a novel reassortant H1N2 swine influenza virus with gene constellation derived from multiple viral sources

        Lee, J.H.,Pascua, P.N.Q.,Decano, A.G.,Kim, S.M.,Park, S.J.,Kwon, H.I.,Kim, E.H.,Kim, Y.I.,Kim, H.,Kim, S.Y.,Song, M.S.,Jang, H.K.,Park, B.K.,Choi, Y.K. Elsevier Science 2015 INFECTION GENETICS AND EVOLUTION Vol.34 No.-

In 2011-2012, contemporary North American-like H3N2 swine influenza viruses (SIVs) possessing the 2009 pandemic H1N1 matrix gene (H3N2pM-like virus) were detected in domestic pigs of South Korea where H1N2 SIV strains are endemic. More recently, we isolated novel reassortant H1N2 SIVs bearing the Eurasian avian-like swine H1-like hemagglutinin and Korean swine H1N2-like neuraminidase in the internal gene backbone of the H3N2pM-like virus. In the present study, we clearly provide evidence on the genetic origins of the novel H1N2 SIVs virus through genetic and phylogenetic analyses. In vitro studies demonstrated that, in comparison with a pre-existing 2012 Korean H1N2 SIV [A/swine/Korea/CY03-1½012 (CY03-1½012)], the 2013 novel reassortant H1N2 isolate [A/swine/Korea/CY0423/2013 (CY0423-12/2013)] replicated more efficiently in differentiated primary human bronchial epithelial cells. The CY0423-12/2013 virus induced higher viral titers than the CY03-1½012 virus in the lungs and nasal turbinates of infected mice and nasal wash samples of ferrets. Moreover, the 2013 H1N2 reassortant, but not the intact 2012 H1N2 virus, was transmissible to naive contact ferrets via respiratory-droplets. Noting that the viral precursors have the ability to infect humans, our findings highlight the potential threat of a novel reassortant H1N2 SIV to public health and underscore the need to further strengthen influenza surveillance strategies worldwide, including swine populations.

      • A microcrystalline cellulose ingrained polydimethylsiloxane triboelectric nanogenerator as a self-powered locomotion detector

        Chandrasekhar, A.,Alluri, N.,Saravanakumar, B.,Selvarajan, S.,Kim, S. J. Royal Society of Chemistry 2017 Journal of materials chemistry. C, Materials for o Vol.5 No.7

<P>Scavenging of ambient dissipated mechanical energy addresses the limitations of conventional batteries by providing an auxiliary voltaic power source, and thus has significant potential for self-powered and wearable electronics. Here, we demonstrate a cellulose/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) triboelectric nanogenerator (C-TENG) based on the contact and separation mode between a cellulose/PDMS composite film and an aluminium electrode. The device fabricated with a composite film of 5 wt% generates an open circuit voltage of 28 V and a short circuit current of 2.8 mu A with an instantaneous peak power of 576 mu W at a mechanical force of 32.16 N. The C-TENG was systematically studied and demonstrated to be a feasible power source that can commute instantaneous operation of LEDs and act as a self-powered locomotion detector for security applications. The C-TENG can also be used as a wearable power source with an in-built lithium ion battery charging circuit during a range of human motions.</P>

      • A study of nerve agent model organophosphonate binding with manganese-A2B-corrole and -A2B2-porphyrin systems

        Kim, K.,Kim, I.,Maiti, N.,Kwon, S.J.,Bucella, D.,Egorova, O.A.,Lee, Y.S.,Kwak, J.,Churchill, D.G. Pergamon Press 2009 Polyhedron Vol.28 No.12

Herein the synthesis and binding studies of novel trans-A2B-corrole and trans-A2B2-porphyrin derivatives are presented in comparing manganese(III)-organophosphonate (OP) binding (e.g., Mn+←O?PR(OR)2) capabilities. H3(PFP-VC) [PFP-VC=5,15-di(pentafluorophenyl)-10-(3-vinylphenyl)corrolate] was synthesized by way of literature procedures and was characterized by a variety of 2-D NMR spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These compounds represent the first example of 3-vinyl-phenyl-containing meso-substituted corroles or porphyrins. Mn(PFP-VC) (3) was treated separately with (CH3CH2O)2P?O(C3H6NMe2), (C4H9O)2P?O(Me), (C2H5O)2P?O(CH2COCH3), (CH3CH2O)2P?O(Me), to give 1:1 adducts, as determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy (Job Plot), giving a red shift; Ph3P?O, was also found to bind, but very weakly. The trans-A2B2-porphyrin analogue Mn(PFP-VP) (4) was also prepared by way of a literature procedure; related binding studies gave 1:1 organophosphonate-Mn(PFP-VP) adducts (Job Plot). A clean blue shift occurred for the Mn-porphyrins at higher organophosphonate loadings (Ka values: 6.7 (0.9)-11.9 (0.4)M-1). DFT geometry optimizations of O?P(OMe)2Me binding and formal Mn-O or P-O cleavage products in the unsubstituted neutral Mn-corrolato and -porphyrinato systems with a range of metal-based spin states revealed greatest stability in formal phosphoryl oxygen binding (energies: 11-13kcal/mol) for the Mn-corrole (singlet); the Mn-porphyrin (sextet) was also quite stable.

      • Ds+ meson production at central rapidity in proton-proton collisions at s=7 TeV

        ALICE Collaboration,Abelev, B.,Adam, J.,Adamova, D.,Adare, A.M.,Aggarwal, M.M.,Aglieri Rinella, G.,Agocs, A.G.,Agostinelli, A.,Aguilar Salazar, S.,Ahammed, Z.,Ahmad, N.,Ahmad Masoodi, A.,Ahn, S.A.,Ahn North-Holland Pub. Co 2012 Physics letters: B Vol.718 No.2

The pT-differential inclusive production cross section of the prompt charm-strange meson Ds+ in the rapidity range |y|<0.5 was measured in proton-proton collisions at s=7 TeV at the LHC using the ALICE detector. The analysis was performed on a data sample of 2.98x108 events collected with a minimum-bias trigger. The corresponding integrated luminosity is Lint=4.8 nb-1. Reconstructing the decay Ds+→φπ+, with φ→K-K+, and its charge conjugate, about 480 Ds+/- mesons were counted, after selection cuts, in the transverse momentum range 2<pT<12 GeV/c. The results are compared with predictions from models based on perturbative QCD. The ratios of the cross sections of four D meson species (namely D0, D+, D@?+ and Ds+) were determined both as a function of pT and integrated over pT after extrapolating to full pT range, together with the strangeness suppression factor in charm fragmentation. The obtained values are found to be compatible within uncertainties with those measured by other experiments in e+e-, ep and pp interactions at various centre-of-mass energies.

Effect of controlled O2 impurities on N2 afterglows of RF discharges

        Kang, N.,Lee, M.,Ricard, A.,Oh, S.g. Elsevier 2012 Current Applied Physics Vol.12 No.6

A RF capacitive flowing discharge and post-discharge are experimentally studied in N2 gas and N2-(10-4-10-2)O2 gas mixtures by using the optical emission spectroscopy at a pressure of 8 Torr, a flow rate of 1 slm and a transmitted RF power of 100 W. In these conditions the flowing discharge is distinguished by early and late afterglow. It is shown that the early afterglow is very sensitive to small quantity of O2. The band emissions from N2+(B) and N2(B,υ') decreased sharply in the early afterglow when O2 is introduced before the plasma. By using simple gas kinetics for pseudo-stationary conditions in the afterglows, N2++O2 charge transfer and N2(a') quenching by O2 play key roles in the afterglow. The charge transfers and quenching reactions are amplified when O-atoms are produced in the plasma. It is also observed that the O-atoms are produced in the early afterglow when O2 is introduced after the plasma.

Evaluation of elemental concentrations of uranium, thorium and potassium in top soils from Kuwait

        A.D. Bajoga,A.N. Al-Dabbous,A.S. Abdullahi,N.A. Alazemi,Y.D. Bachama,S.O. Alaswad 한국원자력학회 2019 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.51 No.6

Top soil samples across the state of Kuwait numering ninety were collected and analysed using gammarayspectrometry, to evaluate the elemental concentration of 238U, 232Th and 40K and their depletion/enrichment. Results of elemental concentration ranges from 0.48 to 2.61 mg/kg, 0.87e5.23 mg/kg, and0.24e2.23%, with a mean values of 1.39 mg/kg, 3.47 mg/kg, and 1.18%, for the 238U, 232Th and 40K,respectively. Further analysis was conducted amongst the five identified soil types, i.e. Aquisalids (S1),Calcigypsids (S2), Petrocalcids (S3), Petrogypsids (S4), and torripsamment (S5). The highest radioactivityconcentrations from both uranium and thorium were recorded in the S2 (Calcigypsids) soil, with a valueof 1.71 (mg/kg) and 4.45 (mg/kg), respectively. Minimum and maximum values of 40K are 1.1(%) and1.27(%) and is prevalent in Aquisalids (S1) and Petrocalcids (S3) soil types, respectively. Ratios of elementalconcentration for 232Th/238U, 40K/238U, 40K/232Th across the soil types are 2.53, 0.09 and 0.03, with acorrelation coefficient of 0.92, 0.34, and 0.38, respectively. A progressively higher 232Th/238U ratio isobserved moving south-wards, indicating lower 238U content in soils from the south relative to thenorthern part. Overall results indicate Kuwait to be relatively an area with low level of naturalradioactivity.
