Vol.0 No.30
The documents of family registers of the Gyeongju Yi family in Chuncheon consist of twenty three junhogus (準戶口, quasi-copies of family registers) and one hogudanja (戶口單子, copy of family register) of the period from 1697 to 1810, kept in the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies. This paper analyzed the personal names of different ages to know the usage of name suffixes, the obscure names and general characteristics of naming method in these family registers. According to the results, name suffixes /soy/, /do?/, /san/, /dol/, /dal/, /man/, /day/, /son/ and /jay/ are used for men, and suffixes /gım/, /d?g/, /may/, /jin/ and /ny?y/ for women in these documents as in the early Joseon dynasty. Newly, name suffixes /rib/, /nomi/, /bo?/, /dıg/ and /s?n/ are used for men, and suffixes /ny?n/, /j?b/, /dan/, /og/, /bun/ for women. Name suffix /sun/ is now popular for women, but was used only for men in the Gyeongju Yi junhogus in Chuncheon. 丁 denoted the name suffix /d??/ in the early Joseon dynasty, but was used for denoting the suffix /jy.ng/ in these documents. The name suffixes /gai/~/gay/ and /bog/ for men and women are also traced. Through comparison of diverse notations of obscure personal names of different ages, several names such as Dolhi, Gud.soy, Hupsi, .?rinny?ni/?inny?ni, Hwari/Hwai, Nıtribi, Bı?psani, Nıtj?ni, Gotjay, Barid.gi, G.risoy, Duksoy, Gomburi, Gombay, J?mi, Sugoi, Oja?i, B?njay and S?mi are identified in the Chuncheon family registers. As for the general characteristics of naming the members belonging to the Gyeongju Yi family, firstly, it was general to use the same syllable in names with different name suffixes between the brothers and sisters in a family, and particularly between the parents and children. Secondly, phonemic system was changing and showed a confusion especially between /?/(low round vowel) and /a/. No more distinctiveness existed between /jya/ (or /d?a/) and /ja/ (or /dza/), or between /jyo?/ (or /d?o?/) and /jo?/ (or /dzo?/) that had been phonemically different in the 15th century. Thirdly, some personal names were borrowed from animal names such as gayyaji (개야지, puppy) in the early 18th century, and ga?ji (강아지, puppy) and m.yaji (?야지, foal) in the middle-late 18th century, indicating that in the Chuncheon area, gayyaji changed into ga.aji in the middle 18th century, but that m?yaji did not yet change into m?.?aji or ma?aji, the Seoul word forms of 17th and 18th centuries.
