        Cross-currents of Change and Continuity:Korean National Literature and Korean National Cinema

        The decade of the 1960s in Korea is normally regarded as a transitional period, but this transition has been consistently viewed in either economic or political terms. In this paper I examine the 1960s and the 1970s as a period of cultural transition―from a neo-Confucian emphasis on “high” art to a broader, more inclusive acceptance of “popular” forms of cultural expression. Although these two realms of cultural production are often viewed as fundamentally antithetical, I argue that there is actually significant continuity in terms of both artistic expression and cultural engagement. In particular, I look at the trajectories of Korean national literature and cinema and their areas of confluence. I examine the career of Kim Sŭng-ok, who in the 1960s was the preeminent literary voice of a new generation and who in the 1970s was the screenwriter for some of the most popular films of that era, and I show how Kim’s career changes track parallel changes in both literature and cinema. Artistically, Kim continued his literary expressions of a new sensibility in his screenplays, bringing to cinema a new infusion of seriousness and respectability. Culturally, Kim continued his explorations of the ways in which rapid changes in Korean politics and the booming economy led to miscommunication and chaos in society. By consistently exploring processes of national identity formation and re-formation, Kim’s 1960s literature can be seen as crucial instances of Korean national literature (minjok munhak). In the same manner, Kim’s 1970s screenplays can be seen as foundational moments in a Korean national cinema.

        Literature of the Bittersweet: Kim Sung-ok and 1960s Korea

        This paper centers on the erstwhile novelist Kim Seung-ok with a focus not only on his watershed works of the 1960s, but also on his lesser-known works of the 1970s as well as on the circumstances and possible reasons for his decision to quit writing in the 1980s. His works from the 60s address certain basic human contradictions and are in this respect timeless, and these same works are also firmly grounded in their larger socio-cultural contexts of 1960s Korea. This article attempts to place the word firmly here sous rature. In new critical terms, the Kim's settings can not be understood as anything but Korea, in the then and now. This characteristic is shared, however, with highly ideological literature that at times seems to want to beat the reader over the head with the problems and author-sponsored solutions of then and now. In order to understand Kim's paradoxical position in Korean literary history, one must view his works from within the context of the debate between pure and engagement literature.

        30 Gbps High-Speed Characterization and Channel Performance of Coaxial Through Silicon Via

        <P>Coaxial through silicon via (TSV) technique allows reduction of high frequency loss due to conductivity in silicon substrate and flexibility in impedance by controlling the ratio of shield to center radii. For the first time, we measured and analyzed the high-speed channel performance of coaxial TSV. This letter presents the measurement results of the fabricated test vehicle in S-parameter and eye-diagram. The eye-diagram measurement results prove that coaxial TSV is capable of supporting signal transmission up to bit rate of 30 Gbps. The equivalent circuit model is suggested and experimentally verified by S-parameter comparison. Furthermore, the superiority of coaxial TSV over conventional TSV is confirmed by comparison of S-parameter results from equivalent circuit model simulation.</P>

        갈색거저리 유충을 급이한 산란계로부터 얻은 계란의 품질특성

        본 연구는 음식폐기물을 활용하여 갈색거저리를 사육한 후에 산란계에 급이시 나타나는 계란의 특성을 분석하기 위해 수행되었다. 계란의 두께는 처리군에서 약간 얇아지는 경향성을 보였지만, 신선도를 나타내는 Haugh unit는 처리군이 대조군에 비교하여 높아지는 것으로 나타났고, 특히 5%가 가장 높았다. 난황의 색상은 5% 급이군에서 명도와 황색도가 낮아지는 반면에 적색도가 증가되는 경향성을 보였다. 5% 급이군은 조지방과 조단백이 대조군과 유사하게 형성되는 것으로 나타났지만, 10%와 15% 급이군들은 대조군보다 조지방 및 조단백 함량이 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 탄수화물 함량은 10%와 15% 급이군들에서 높게 형성되는 것으로 관찰되었다. 처리군들에서 구성아미노산은 대조군에 비교하여 필수아미노산보다 비필수아미노산의 비율의 증가가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 항산화물질의 지표가 되는 폴리페놀의 함량은 5% 급이군에서 가장 높은 것으로 나타났기 때문에, 계란의 저장성 및 항산화에 영향을 줄 수 있는 것으로 추정된다. 따라서 고단백 및 고지방 사료인 갈색거저리를 보충사료원으로 활용할 때 계란의 영양성분 함량에 중용한 변화를 유발할 수 있고 계란의 신선도를 개선할 수 있는 것으로 제의된다. This study examined the characteristics of eggs obtained from layer chickens reared with feed that included Tenebrio molitor larvae, which were in turn bred using feed that included dried food waste powder. The eggs showed a tendency to be slightly thinner in the treated groups, but the Haugh unit indicating freshness was higher in the treated groups than the control group, and the 5% larval-treated group showed the highest value. The color of the yolk tended toward higher redness, lower brightness, and lower yellowness in the 5%-treated group, which also showed similar crude fat and protein values to the control group; the 10%- and 15% larval-treated groups had lower crude fat and protein values, although the carbohydrate content was higher. Structural amino acids in the treated groups showed a higher ratio of non-essential amino acids to essential amino acids than the control. The polyphenol content, which is an index of antioxidants, was highest in the 5%-treated group, and it is thought that this may affect the storage and antioxidant properties of the eggs. Thus, when employed with a feed source to maintain high protein and high fat, T. molitor larvae may cause critical changes in the nutrient content of eggs and improve their freshness.

        Identifying the major intermediate species by combining time-resolved X-ray solution scattering and X-ray absorption spectroscopy

        <P>Identifying the intermediate species along a reaction pathway is a first step towards a complete understanding of the reaction mechanism, but often this task is not trivial. There has been a strong on-going debate: which of the three intermediates, the CHI<SUB>2</SUB> radical, the CHI<SUB>2</SUB>–I isomer, and the CHI<SUB>2</SUB><SUP>+</SUP> ion, is the dominant intermediate species formed in the photolysis of iodoform (CHI<SUB>3</SUB>)? Herein, by combining time-resolved X-ray liquidography (TRXL) and time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy (TR-XAS), we present strong evidence that the CHI<SUB>2</SUB> radical is dominantly formed from the photolysis of CHI<SUB>3</SUB> in methanol at 267 nm within the available time resolution of the techniques (∼20 ps for TRXL and ∼100 ps for TR-XAS). The TRXL measurement, conducted using the time-slicing scheme, detected no CHI<SUB>2</SUB>–I isomer within our signal-to-noise ratio, indicating that, if formed, the CHI<SUB>2</SUB>–I isomer must be a minor intermediate. The TR-XAS transient spectra measured at the iodine L<SUB>1</SUB> and L<SUB>3</SUB> edges support the same conclusion.         <P>A simultaneous switching current (SSC) drawn by an integrated circuit (IC) creates simultaneous switching noise on power nets, which in turn causes jitters in the I/O signals and reduces the maximum clock frequency. For a thorough analysis of high-speed ICs, there is a dire need to measure currents at specific power pins of the ICs. In this paper, a novel magnetically coupled embedded current probing structure is proposed for measuring the SSC on the chip level resulting from the logical activity of the I/O buffers. SSCs are found by capturing the magnetic flux induced by the SSC of interest, with the proposed embedded current probing structure using magnetic coupling, and then reconstructing the original current waveform using the transfer impedance profile. Through a series of measurements with test vehicles fabricated on the chip level, we experimentally verified the proposed probing structures in the time and frequency domains and proved that they can effectively measure the SSC. Finally, future directions for improvements are discussed at the end of this paper.</P>

      • Effect of dissolved organic carbon from sludge, Rice straw and spent coffee ground biochar on the mobility of arsenic in soil

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>To date, studies on the mobility of arsenic (As) in soil amended with biochar have primarily relied on broad empirical observations, resulting in a gap between the behavior of As in amended soil and the chemical mechanisms controlling that behavior. This study focuses on the influence of abiotic factors in As mobility in As-contaminated soils amended with biochar. In order to understand the leaching of DOC and phosphate across a range of biomass feedstock and pyrolysis temperature, rice straw and granular sludge from an anaerobic digester were pyrolyzed at 300, 550, and 700 °C, and subjected to leaching studies by mixing air dried soil with 10 wt% of biochar at a soil: water ratio of 1:1(w/v). The concentration of DOC in the presence of granular sludge biochar and rice straw biochar increased from 190 mg L<SUP>−1</SUP> to 2605 mg L<SUP>−1</SUP> and 1192 mg L<SUP>−1</SUP>, respectively, which considerable accelerated the mobilization of Fe and As. More specifically, DOC drove the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). Our results suggest enhanced release of As via the reductive dissolution of iron oxides, including by the chelating-enhanced dissolution of Fe oxides, and competitive desorption by DOC and phosphate from biochar. The influence of DOC and phosphate was further evaluated using realistic application amounts (1, 3, and 5 wt%) of biochars derived from pyrolysis of granular sludge, rice straw and spent coffee ground at 300 and 550 °C.
