Vol.57 No.1
This essay examines Romeo and Juliet as an early modern theatrical product fully loaded with the cultures constructed through the experiences of plague. The sporadic but continual outbreaks of contagious diseases over the sixteenth to mid-seventeenth century engendered frequent appearance of rhetorical expressions or metaphors of contagion, but not direct or realistic depictions of the actual plaguy bodies on the early modern English stage. Although latent or implicit, early modern plays connote the contemporary understanding of contagion, suggest institutional policies to handle the plagues, and project the public psychology of fear and anxiety confronting the seemingly incurable and transmittable diseases. Romeo and Juliet, thus, embodies social mechanism and traumatic responses of the contemporaries, shaped through the repeated overwhelming experiences of disastrous plagues. Whereas the humorous characters including Romeo demonstrate the bodies susceptible to plague, their physical contacts, either boosted by hatred or love, soon conjure suspicions and anxieties for rampant plaguy disease, instantly spreadable through versatile social networks in the city of Verona. In addition, Romeo’s hasty exile and the Friars’ abrupt confinement mirror the strategies and frustrations of the political management by public health authorities in times of plague. The Prince’s concluding statement invoking God invites traditional wrap-up manifesting divine order, but the dreary ending of the play still resonates with doubts and uneasiness chronically weaved through the cultures of plague.

This paper investigates the effects of changes in household structure on service demand. The structure of households in Korea has been quickly changed due to low birth rate and population aging as well as increasing women’s participation in the workforce. Their consumption patterns may have been altered by the structural changes. This paper focuses on the additional demand for market services replacing household activities such as household chores and care services. First, using a 3-sector time allocation model, we theoretically analyze the mechanism that marketization of household production can lead to the expansion of service industries. Next, in order to analyze the effects of changes in household structure on consumption demand, we estimate the Engel curves according to the QUAIDS model. For empirical work, the Survey of Household Finances was used. According to the results, structural changes in Korean households, such as an increase in single-person households, a decrease in families with a spouse or children under 6 years old, and an increase in dual-earner households, have caused an increase in medical expenses, education and training costs, and expenses for household services, which are typically substitutes for household production services.
Anti-Theatrical Costume: Catholic Vestments and Post-Reformation Visual Rhetoric in Doctor Faustus
Vol.25 No.2
This essay discusses the ideological development from anti-Catholicism to anti-theatricalism, while examining the representation of Catholic vestments in Christopher Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus. Based on the fact that religious garments were transferred from church to theater throughout the Reformation, this study explores cultural meanings produced and manipulated on stage with this particular theatrical property. Dr. Faustus repeats anti-Catholic rhetoric, assigns religious vestments to corrupt Catholic priests in Rome, a hideous-looking devil, Mephistopheles, and a faithless former divinity scholar, Faustus. By representing different characters in religious vestments, the play highlights the theatricality of the garments adopted by different characters for disguising purposes. On the Elizabethan stage, post-Reformation theatrical convention of the disguised evil priest was been inherited, developed, and contributed to the ideological convergence of anti-Catholicism and anti-theatricalism in the late sixteenth century.
“위선의 의복”(Garments of Hypocrise) 재활용하기: 존 베일의 『세 가지 법』과 『존 왕』이 재현하는 가톨릭 종교의복
황수경 한국고전중세르네상스영문학회 2014 중세근세영문학 Vol.24 No.1
The essay explores two works of John Bale, a Protestant playwright who actively participated in Cromwellian national project of reforming Catholic England. Bale attempts to reverse the traditional symbolism invested in Catholic vestments by betraying theatrical nature of the clothing. In Bale's theater, Catholic vestments no longer symbolize clerical piety and absolute authority of the Roman Catholic church but stands for corruption, hypocrisy, and deceitfulness. The two plays of Three Laws and King Johan are examined to see how Bale degrades Catholic clergies, their sacred vestments, and Catholic ceremonies facilitated with the same clothing. Three Laws allegorically depicts how the role of vices overlaps with that of Catholic clergies by deliberatelydonning vices with Catholic vestments, while King Johan debunks Catholic authority by satirizing Catholic sacrament of auricular confession and rite of excommunication practiced with the aid of Catholic Vestments. Bale initiated the dramaturgic tradition of ‘Vice/devil in Catholic Vestments’ and these Protestant dramaturgy and visual rhetoric were readily adopted and inherited by Elizabethan popular playwrights including Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare.
Vol.55 No.1
This essay examines how Hermione’s body is appropriated in The Winter’s Tale with her pregnancy in the first three acts and her statue scene in the final act. I would argue that her body represents a battleground for different discourses rather than one side of each conflict. With her pregnant body, she exposes what the contemporary patriarchal and Protestant discourses cannot contain, and how she is sacrificed to be a monument to relieve the male anxiety of controling a female unruly and unpredictable body. Her bodily absence seems to bring stability but results in never ending mourning and penance which does not benefit the community at all, whereas her resurrection or return to the community opens another discursive chaos not just for Leontes, but this time for audiences, too. When she moves from a statue, her body invites further discussions on differences between dead image and living human body, creating meta-dramatic moment of revealing actor’s body performing the statue and Hermione. Her body now serves as a “thing in itself” not occupied or identified yet, but does not allow a full access to its substantial knowledge to anyone but Paulina, who witnessed off-stage bodily changes Hermione has experienced; giving birth, death, and recovery. Hermione, with a female body, better embodies early modern discord in understanding human body as sign and substance.

This essay examines the sacred bodies symbolically and materially explored in The Croxton Play of the Sacrament. The play touches the late medieval polemic of transubstantiation through a conventional miracle play structure, in which a wicked Jew, Jonathas attempts to desecrate the host, only to have it miraculously transform into the body of Christ. Jonathas, however, deviates from the stereotype of the evil Jew, and happens to converge with the host when his hand is severed from the body. Although the play demonstrates the inclusive power of the sacred body miraculously containing even the most heretic and alien body of the Jew, Jonathas’s dismembered body attracts more attention on stage while creating the stark contrast with the inanimate image of the Christ. When Jonathas recovers the hand and achieves the wholeness, he becomes a living sacred body soon to be unleashed to the world, suggesting the most incredible miracle of the play.
