The purpose of this study is to measure the changes in life expectancy at birth caused by the changes in patterns of mortality in Korea during the last decades. This study used data on the life tables (1975-2005) and the annual report on the cause of death statistics (1995-2005) released by the National Statistical Office Republic of Korea. The contribution of different ages, sexes and causes of death to the change in life expectancy at birth during the 1975-2005 was estimated with a decomposition technique developed by Arriaga. The mortality change of age 65+ had the largest impact on life expectancy at birth during the 1995-2005. And the contribution of life expectancy at birth in age groups of over 65 years was more increased than any other age groups did, furthermore, this trend of females was even more remarkable. During 1975-2005, the sex mortality differential life expectancy at birth at ages 55-64 years contributed the most to the total sex differential of life expectancy at birth. Particularly in 2005, the sex moratality differential at the oldest ages contributed to the increase in the total sex differential of life expectancy at birth. In 1995-2005 periods, mortality reduction from hypertensive diseases was the largest contributor of years of life in both periods, Especially, the mortallity increases of transport accidents, cerebrovascular diseases, malignant neoplasm of trachea, bronchus and lung, malignant neoplasm of liver and intrahepatic bile ducts was the contributor of years of life during that first period. And mortality reduction of hypertensive diseases (0.65; male, 0.34; female) at age groups (over 65 age) made the largest contribution of life years to all groups of causes to any age groups.
