Various thermal control systems have been used widely in Korea for the conservation of heating energy and the enhancement of thermal comfort in residential buildings. But the control performance of the automatic control apparatus for radiant floor heating system extensively vary with the design and operational conditions of the heating system, as well as the climate condition. Through the investigation of the control characteristics of several control methods, the linear control referenced with returned hot water temperature was turned out to be very effective. As results, a new control method for domestic radiant heating system, so called hybrid control, was proposed and verified. This method changes control methods automatically, referencing with the hot water flow rate which means outdoor air temperature or heating load. A very simple, economical and highly reliable control system could also be composed without the complicated and costly device such as valve actuator, encoder and so on, by using informations obtained from the heat meter installed for billing service.

Various experiments were carried out to verify thermal characteristics of the heating system with various control methods, that is on/off control referenced with indoor air temperature, linear control referenced with indoor air or returned hot water temperature. As results, power for pumping hot water and heat loss through the heating pipe could be reduced to 43% and 8% relatively with linear control compared to on/off control method. A new control method for domestic radiant floor heating system, so called hybrid control, was proposed and verified, which could be changed control methods with outdoor air temperature or heating load referenced with hot water flow rate.

The measuring apparatus such as heat meter is legally obliged to be installed and used for heat rating for each dwelling in centralized residential buildings in Korea. Heat meters with mechanical working parts such as impeller, at present widely used in residential buildings in Korea, have caused some critical troubles, such as errors of impeller working, the insensitive response at low flow rate range and so on. For the sake of solving these problems, an electromagnetic heat meter was developed recently in KICT. A field test at the residential building complex were carried out in the present study to verify the influences on reliability of newly developed heat meters in various field conditions such as the pressure in pipe works, temperature and humidity of the installed circumstances, etc.. As results we found that heat meters installed H-apartment houses having been operated confidently in winter season. 2.4~13.8% of heating energy saving was also achieved through the mind inspiration.

One of the hybrid(load-sharing) HVAC systems that attracted attention for its potential for energy savings while providing high thermal comfort is a radiant cooling system using ceiling panels. Panel systems may be combined either with a central forced-air system or with decentralized convective systems, or with in-space fan-coil units. In this study, the ceiling radiant panel system is combined with a fan-coil unit for the cooling load sharing and the dehumidification. The main thrust of this research is to analysis the cooling characteristic of the hybrid HVAC system with ceiling panels and to estimate the cooling load fraction of between fan-coil units and ceiling radiant panel under various condition. It was found that the cooling load fraction of chilled ceiling panels can be enhanced in the air volume of a fan-coil unit by 40~67% under the dew point control.
