북미자유무역협정(NAFTA)과 한국기업의 전략적 대응방안
현인규 순천향대학교 1994 논문집 Vol.17 No.1
NAFTA(North American Free Trade Agreement). gigantic trading bloc went into effect Jan. 1. 1994. NAFTA, which consists of three North countries-Canada. Mexico and United States-has a combined gross domestic product of $7 billion and will be a huge free trade zone of more 370 million consumers. Because NAFTA calls for trade barriers seperating the three countries to fall within 15 years, it would bring enourmous economic benefits to its members. However, outsiders such as Korea are worring about whether this new bloc will hit their share of the lucrative U.S. market. For korean firms, NAFTA will be a severe challenge. Their exports to the NAFTA countries have continued to decrease for the past five years. They see that the circumstances of their exports in this area will be getting worse. In order to solve this problem, Korean firms, first of all, should establish new strategies and tactics. This papaer argues that through the strategy of localiztion and stratigic allience, Korean firms can enhance international competitiveness. This localization strategy will be useful to avoid the tariffic and non-tariffic barriers of NAFTA. Moreover the stratigic allience with local firms or between large and small domestic firms will help strenghten the international competitiveness of Korean firms.
