In this study, genetic algorithm(GA) was applied to structural optimization. When the parameters of GA were improperly selected, the efficiency may become very poor. In order to improve the efficiency of GA, the proper ranges and influences of the parameters were examined. The ranges of parameters obtained were applied to optimization of practical structures with discrete or integer variables. Also, the shape optimization of a short cantilever given vertical load was performed. It was verified that GA was an appropriate method for structural optimization with discontinuous variables.
