Dynamic characteristics of catenary system for KTX Korean high-speed trains are investigated. A simulation program based on the finite element models of the catenary is developed. The influences of the various design parameters on the vibrational responses of the catenary are determined. The main design parameters include tension on the contact and messenger wires and the stiffness of the droppers connecting the two wires. The vibrational responses are primarily determined by the reflections of the propagating wave, and the dropper stiffness is found to be the dominant factor that influences overall dynamic characteristics of the catenary.

The dynamic characteristics of the current collection process of the high-speed railway are investigated through signals acquired during a test run. The signals are obtained from accelerometers, load cells, and strain gauges attached to various positions of the pantograph, and they are processed in time-and frequency-domains to obtain the dynamic characteristics. The main natural frequency of the pantograph is found to be 8.5Hz. There also are components at low frequencies varying linearly with the train speed. The contact frequency components above 20Hz is attenuated as they pass through the secondary suspension. The main frequency component of the load cell signal is found to be related with the rolling motion of the panhead generated by the stagger in the catenary.

A data acquisition and signal processing system for evaluating the current collection system is developed, and subsequently applied to the measurement and analysis of the contact force in the current collection system of the proposed Korean High Speed Railway. The measurement of the contact force is based on an algorithm that employs the relationship between the contact force, the strain due to the bending moment and the panhead inertia. For the contact forces in the frequency range of less that 50㎐, the panhead can the modeled as a rigid body in the inertia calculation. For higher frequencies however, the bending vibration modes of the panhead need to be accounted for as well.

Technology on the rolling stock is very composition and system engineering. We have to consider to many parameters on the rolling stock design. High speed train is interface between rolling stock and infra system of rail signal communication etc. For many years testing operation has experienced substantial growth based on various advanced new technology. Recently some problems was clearly stated on effective management practical use and testing operation of the the rolling stock on the technology change. This paper presents some results of the study on necessary requirements of the operation testing for rolling stock technology change. We propose a general plan to suggest the operation testing and the parameters of the rolling stock on the technology change in the text.

In this paper, we introduce the software and hardware of the measuring system for performances of traction and braking in KTX(Korea Train eXpress). The measuring system focuses on the verification of the performance and acquisition of test data. The software controls the hardware of the measuring system, performs the analysis and calculation of measurement data and acts as interface between users and the hardware. For this purpose, three programs, such as a measuring program, a back-up program and a post-processing program, have developed.
