A combustion flame visualization system, for use as an engine diagnostics tool, was developed in order to understand the combustion reaction mechanism in the development stage of mass-produced S.I. engine. The measurement system consists of a still camera, a high speed camera and a computer-aided image processing system. The high speed camera system is capable of high speed photography up to 5000 fps.<br/> By using this system, flame structure estimated from the greylevel on acquired image and direction of flame propagation(shape of flame) in a single cylinder gasoline engine has been measured through the still camera and the high speed camera to understand combustion phemonena.<br/> There is a correlation between the air flow motion(swirl) and flame during combustion cycle. resulting in faster flame development to face exhaust valve.<br/>

Results from an experimental study of flow distribution in a close-coupled catalytic converter (CCC) are presented. The experiments were carried out with a flow measurement system under steady and transient flow conditions. The flow distribution of the CCC was measured by LDV system and flow visualization. Results from numerical analysis are also presented.<br/> Experimental results showed that in steady flow conditions, the flow through each exhaust pipe made some flow concentrations on a small region of the CCC inlet. The transient test results showed that the flow through each exhaust pipe in the engine firing order interacted with each other to make the flow distribution uniform. The results of numerical analysis supported the experimental results, and helped explain the flow in the entry region of CCC.<br/>

The system consist of an image converter camera and a computer-aided image processing system.<br/> By using this system, flame structure estimated from the brightness level on a image and direction of flame propagation in a single cylinder gasoline engine were measured. The flame propagation in a single cylinder gasoline engine has been measured through a I-CCD camera to understand combustion phenomena.<br/> The results showed that the. flame in the initial stage seemed to be blue flame, luminous flame in the end stage. Most of images, the flame propagation was occurred rapidly in the direction of exhaust port, while it was observed smooth flame propagation in the direction of intake port.<br/>

Results from an experimental study of flow distribution in a close-coupled catalytic converter (CCC) are presented. The experiments were carried out with a flow measurement system. Two cases were studied; steady flow condition and transient flow condition. The flow distribution at the exit of the first monolith of the CCC was measured with a pitot tube. Results from numerical analysis are also presented.<br/> Experimental results showed that the uniformity index of exhaust gas velocity decreases as Reynolds number increases. In steady flow conditions, the flow through each exhaust pipe makes the flow concentrate on a small region of the CCC inlet. On the other hand, the transient test results showed that the flow through each exhaust pipe in the engine firing order interacts with each other to make the flow distribution uniform. The results from numerical analysis support the experimental results, and help explain the flow in the entry region of the CCC.<br/>

Gasoline direct injection engines have been studied to improve engine efficiency and to reduce emission. Spray characteristics of an injector have an important effect on engine efficiency and emission. Thus the purpose of this study is to provide the fundamental data for injector design which is investigated on the spray characteristics of high pressure swirl injector for GDI engine. In this paper, PDA was utilized for the measurement of mean velocity of droplets. Measurement field was from 10mm below nozzle tip to 100mm in axial direction and 20mm in radial direction. The results are presented by the vector to illustrate the magnitude and direction of velocity at each position. The spray images were also utilized to make the measurement position<br/>

Combustion phenomena dominant factor of engine emission and power were measured using optical approach methods. Combustion pressures were measured for combustion analysis at various engine rpm, spark timing, and air access ratio. We also measured instantaneous flame image and chemi-luminescence to verify the characteristics of flame propagation, the structure of flame evolution in a optically accessible single cylinder engine.<br/>

The mixture formation process of gasoline direct-injection(GDI) engines is quite complex and the requirement on the spray quality changes with the combustion system. The initial spray of high pressure swirl injector was studied using shadowgraph technique by multi-frame camera. The cross section of this spray was visualized using two-dimensional laser Mie scattering technique. The effects of fuel injection pressure. injection duration. and ambient pressure on the spray breakup were studied. Both the spray tip penetration and effect of swirl on the spray were increased with an increase in fuel injection pressure. With an increase in the ambient pressure. both the spray tip penetration and the spray width decreased. The structure of cross section of this spray had the circumferential distribution with an hollow part.<br/>
