In this study, rare earth elements (REE) leaching from a refractory REE ore containing goethite as a major gangue mineral was conducted, introducing a two-stage method of chemical decomposition-acid leaching. At the chemical decomposition step, using one of alkaline agent, NaOH, the ore was decomposed, changing NaOH concentration from 20 to 50 wt% at 10% (w/w) of pulp density and the maximum temperature achieved without boiling at each NaOH concentration. With increasing NaOH concentration, light REE (Ce, La and Nd) and iron were concentrated in the solid phase which is the decomposed product, while aluminum (Al) and phosphorus (P) were removed to the liquid phase, and their concentrations in the solid phase were down to 0.96 and 0.17%, respectively. In addition, through XRD analysis, it was found that the crystallinity of goethite was considerably decreased. At the acid leaching step, the product decomposed by 50 wt% NaOH was leached at 3.0 M HCl and 80 ℃ for 3 hr, then the REE leaching efficiency was above 94% (Ce 80%), and the leaching efficiencies of Al and P were decreased to 12 and 0%, respectively. Therefore, in terms of both REE leaching efficiency and impurity removal, those decomposition and leaching conditions were chosen as optimum processing methods of the investigated material. In terms of REE leaching mechanism, because REE and iron leaching efficiencies showed the positive correlation each other, so it can be concluded that decreasing crystallinity of goethite affect the improvement of REE leaching.

In this paper, we describe the thermal characteristics of the output voltages of ethanol gas sensor according to the amount of radiation incident on the infrared sensors located at each focal point of two elliptical waveguides. In order to verify the output characteristics of the gas sensor according to the amount of incident light on the infrared sensor, two combinations of sensor modules were fabricated. Hydrophobic thin film is deposited on one of the reflectors of sensor modules and one of the two infrared sensors was equipped with a hollow disk (1.0 Ø), and the temperature characteristics of the infrared sensor equipped with the hollow disk (1.0 Ø) and the infrared sensor without the disk were tested. The temperature was varied from 253 K to 333 K at 10 K intervals based on 298 K. The properties of ethanol gas sensor have been identified with respect to varying temperature for a range of ethanol concentration from 0 ppm to 500 ppm. In the case of an infrared sensor equipped with a hollow disk (1.0 Ø), the output voltage of the sensor decreased by 0.8 mV and 1 mV, respectively, as the temperature increased. Conversely, the output voltage of the diskless infrared sensor showed an average increase of 67 mV and 57 mV as the temperature increased. The ethanol concentrations estimated on the basis of results show an error of more than 10 % for less than 100 ppm concentration. However, if the ethanol concentration exceeds 100 ppm, the gas concentration can be estimated within the range of ±10%.

This study aims to investigate breakage and liberation characteristics of iron ore from Shinyemi mine, Jeongseon by ball mill. Parameters of breakage functions for three grade samples of iron ore were obtained using single-sized-feed breakage test and back-calculation based on nonlinear programming. The results showed that with the increase in the grade of iron ore, the breakage rate factor decrease whereas the particle size sensitivity decreases. This results from retardation of microcrack-propagation by magnetite grain in the ore. Breakage distribution analysis showed that the breakage mechanism appear to be impact fracture dominant with the increase of grade owing to the stress distribution effect by magnetite grain. Degree of liberation (DOL) increased with the increase in grade and decrease in particle size, respectively. Using the breakage function and size-DOL relationship, a model that can predict time-dependent-DOL is established. When scale-up factors from operating condition are available, the model is expected to be capable of predicting size and DOL with time in actual mining process.
