The purpose of this study was to divide the stages of change of smoking cessation behavior and analysis smoking habits, nicotine dependency and self-efficacy corresponding to the stages of smoking cessation behavior, and to provide basic data for smoking cessation intervention strategies in industrial workers. The subjects for this study were a convenience sample of 146 industrial workers except for the never smokers, who work at a H industry in Ulsan. Data was collected from February 1 to 28. 2002. The research instrument was Stages of Change of Smoking Cessation Measure(DiClemente et al., 1991.) Nicotine Dependency Scale(FTQ: Fagerstrom. 1978) and Smoking Abstinece Self Efficacy (SASE: DiClemente et al., 1985). The data was analyzed using SPSS Window Program version 10.0. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The subjects were distributed in each stage of change of smoking cessation behavior: There were 64 subject(43.0%) in the precontemplation stage, 35 subjects(23.5%) in the contemplation stage, 28 subjects(18.8%) in the preparation stage, 14 subjects(10.1%) in the action stage and 7 subjects(4.7%) in the maintenance stage. 2. Analysis of variance showed that the number of cigarettes per day(4F=43.632, p=.011), the number of quits in the past year(F=3.833, p=.025) and self-efficacy ((F=9.809, p=.000) were significantly associated with the stages of change of smoking cessation behavior. In conclusion, this study suggested that in developing the effective smoking cessation intervention for industrial workers, first it had to be assessed the stage of a client's change prior to apply intervention program, second it should be considered nursing intervention strategies to help subjects who were in the contemplation stage reduce the number of cigarettes per day and try smoking cessation and to reinforce self-efficacy to help progressing from preparation stage to the action stage.
