Paper cultural asset show various deterioration characteristics and behaviors according to the environmental conditions during the storage. The understanding of the paper itself and its conservation knowledge is thus prerequisite to preserve paper cultural assets and pass them to descendants in a good condition. The Annals of Joseon Dynasty is one of the most important our written cultural assets (National treasure No.151) and it is registered as a UNESCO Memory of the World. The Annals of Joseon Dynasty is composed of 1707 volumes and 1,187 books that were written on the official history of 472 years(AD 1392-1863) from King Taejo to King Chuljong (25 generations). Among them, beewax-treated Annals show severe damages due to the deterioration of wax materials such as breaking, hardening, darkening, discoloring and whitening. Urgent measures should be taken to preserve the Annals and prevent further deterioration. Therefore, a systematic and scientific approach on the conservation and restoration of the Annals of Joseon Dynasty is definitely necessary. So it can be used an example to show how much the preservation science can conserve the paper cultural assets. In this respect, this study focuses on analyzing paper properties and deterioration behaviors of the Annals of King Sejong, the most damaged one, using non-destructive micro analysis techniques.

In order to obtain more detailed information concerning the degradation of lignin in the oxygen alkali pulping single stage isothermal delignification of pine wood meal (Pinus koraiensis S. et Z.) was studied in the oxygen alkali system at five temperature level (110℃, 120℃, 130℃, 140℃, 150℃) for 60 min. The rate constant, activation energy, oxygen and alkali consumption during the oxygen alkali delignification were determined by the kinetic method. The 2/5 of total lignin was eliminated at the start of the reaction. The deligminfication rate constant was about 3 times that of caustic soda pulping. The activation energy was about 1/3 lower than in caustic soda pulping. Like oxygen consumption alkali consumption was also rapid early at the reaction and almost ceased after about 10 min. The degradation reaction of lignin was strongly dependent upon the pH decrease of the cooking liquor by organic acid generated in pulping. The lignin in the oxygen alkali pulping degraded into lover molecular weight and had more hydrophillic properties. The methoxyl group decreased considerably at the first of oxygen alkali delignification. while the carbonyl, carboxyl and phenolic hydroxyl group increased rapidly.

Neutral sulfite precooked fir chips were refined in the Asplund Laboratory Defibrator at various temperature (20℃, 120℃ and 180℃). The effects of refining temperatures on the physical property and morphological structure of the resulting pulps were discussed. Yields of precooked chips (84%, 92% and 100%) and refining temperature affected remarkably the yield of refined pulp, its beatability, sheet strength and morhphological characteristics, Pulp yield and beatability decreased with increasing refining temperature. Fiber surface of unbeaten pulp from precooked chips of 84% yield was to some extent covered by the secondary wass, while that of the pulp form precooked yield of 92% by the compound middle lamella. In the case of uncooked chips, fibers were damaged heavily, and the exposed fiber surface resulted from the equal amount of the secondary wall and the compound middle lamella. In the case of pulps prepared from precooked chips of higher yields (92% and 100%), sheet strength increased linearly as sheet density increased, But at the same sheet density, pulp from lower precooked yield (84%) had better sheet strength after open discharge refining as compared to pressurized refining, because pulp from the former had much amounts of fines fraction of higher water retention value than the latters. And there was observed a little difference in fiber length distribution buty nearly similar in its morphology with increasing refining temperature.
