The anti-tumor activity of BCG has been demonstrated by the inhibition of tumor groivth in animals previously infected with viable organism or treated with non-vible mycooiterial products. Protein extract of mycobacterium, Tubercin-3, and lyophilied preparation of streptocac is hemolyticus, OK-432, have also been shown to have the tumor inhibiting effects and along with BCG these are used as cancer immiunotherapcutics. H-11 extract, tained from human uine, was discovered during the investigation of the innate mechanism of animals against cancer and is also used to treat cancer as a tumor inhihitory principle. We studied the effects of the four agents BCG, Tubercin-3, OK-432 and H-11 extract) with large doses on secretory function of stomach and pancreato-biliary system in rats. The following results were obtained; 1. With the administration of a large dose of BCG or H-11 extract, the volume of gastric secretion as well as acid output are depressed. In contrast, after administration of Tubercin 3 or OK 432, gastric acid concentrations are elevated, but without changes in gastric juice volume or acid output. Gastric pH is lowered only in the group to which Tubercin-3 was administered. 2. After a single injection of a large dose, BCG and Tubercin 3 increase the bilirubin output, OK-432 decreases volume and increases the bilirubin concentration, and H-11 extract decreases the volume and increases the bilirubin output of the pancreatobiliary juice, but no groups show any significant changes in cholate secretion. In the groups receiving long term treatment, only the OK-432 group shows decreased volume and bilirubin output, and increased cholatC concentration. 3. Tubercin-3 increases lipase activity following a single injection, but this effect was not significant after long term treatment. After long term treatment with OK 432, decreased lipae and amylase activities are revealed, but no significant changes are observed after a single injection. With the administration of BCG or H-11 extract, there is no changes in lipase or amylase activity. By these data it is reccgnized that the exocrine functiors of the main digestive glands are little, or not at all, affected by the massive doses of the bacterial extracts containing cancer immunotherapeutic substance and of the urine extract having pcssibly the inhibitory principle, and that, the biolcgical manifestations of these materials are quite distinct from those of the alkylating agents or antimetabclite anti-cancer agents.
