Fuel cell has been regarded as one of the most attractive future energy conversion device due to its energy efficient and environmentally friendly properties. However, the price of fuel cell device is extremely high because the precious metal, such as platinum, has been used as essential part of fuel cell catalysts. Therefore, many researchers have investigated the synthesis of non-precious-metal catalysts (NPMCs) for replacing the platinum-based catalysts. In this study, we synthesized metal-nitrogen- carbon (M-N-C) NPMC by pyrolysing the mixture of metal, nitrogen and carbon precursors with various heat-treatment times and compared the oxygen-reduction-reaction (ORR) activity of each catalyst. From this, we wanted to verify the effect of pyrolysis-duration on catalyst synthesis process.

Our work focused on determining if this outer Helmholtz plane reaction does indeedexist and play a significant role in non-precious metal catalysts. A three electrode half-cell was used tomeasure the oxygen reduction reaction activity of a non-precious metal catalystin different alkaline electrolytes. Using electrolytes with different cations altered the hydration energyas well as block or increase access of oxygen to the outer Helmholtzplane. Correlations between hydrationshell size and catalytic activity were observed.
