This Paper discussed axial thrust force and members design of torque converter. As in the centrifugal pump, thrust force encountered in the converter is the result of pressure head and flow generated by the impeller. The impeller thrust is substantially equal and opposite in direction to the sum of the thrusts of the turbine and reactor in normally condition, but there are circumstances when the turbine or reactor may be locked on its connecting parts, and the thrust may be transmitted to members outside the converter. In this study, axial thrust force is analyzed by finite element method and computational fluid dynamics. Also, we propose members design for axial thrust force and estimation method of adequate life for thrust bearing.

A torque converter in automatic transmission transfer the engine power to automatic transmission fluid(ATF). A torque converter consists of the hydrodynamic clutch device and the lock-up clutch device. Especially lock-up clutch device connects directly an engine and an automatic transmission for high efficiency and the low fuel consumption. Friction plate which is main element of torque transfer in lock-up clutch system is made of wet friction material that is consisted of synthetic fiber. Factors decide characteristics of friction material and material composition, apply pressure, rotation speed, ATF temperature. This test evaluates drag torque and response time of lock-up clutch operation distance and ATF temperature.

The mechanical device which is called lock-up clutch connects directly between a engine and a automatic transmission for the high efficiency and the low fuel consumption. Also many studies of NVH and drivability have been in order to increase lock-up area. In a lock-up clutch system a friction plate is one among key elements of torque transfer and is made of wet friction material by synthetic fiber. The taper angle and surface roughness of the front cover, the friction material, the cooling condition and the damper characteristics in a torque converter are important design parameters for the improvement of NVH and drivability. Especially, the slip control of lock-up clutch of torque converter is necessary for better fuel economy. Lock-up clutch is controlled by valve body of automatic transmission. Valve body is very important for precise control of lockup clutch. In this study of pressure controllability of lock-up clutch investigated by slip speed and lock-up pressure.

Torque converter in automatic transmission transfer the engine power to transmission by ATF. Lock-up clutch of torque converter in automatic transmission has been recently designed with a significant purpose of achieving a more fuel economy. To reduce more fuel consumption, the slip is generated between a friction facing and a front cover for torque converter lock-up clutch. Also many studies of NVH and durability have been in order to increase lock-up area. In a lock-up clutch system a friction plate is one among key elements of torque transfer and is a made of wet friction material by synthetic fiber. The surface roughness of the front cover contact area, the friction material, the cooling condition and damper characteristics in a torque converter are important design parameters for the improvement of NVH and durability. Factors decide characteristics of friction material and material composition, apply pressure, rotation speed, ATF temperature. This test evaluates response time of lock-up clutch at changing ATF temperature and input revolution and speed ratio.

This test evaluates noise characteristics of a torque converter for different types of drive plates. The torque converter consists of the hydrodynamic clutch device and the lock-up clutch device. This prat is connected directly between an engine and an automatic transmission for the high efficiency and the low fuel consumption. Engine and torque converter are combined by a flexible drive plate, and engine power is passed to an automatic transmission. By applying different types of drive plates of torque converter, we can be found a change of the noise characteristics. As a result, the torque converter with the drive plate optimization is good for noise reduction.

In this study, our purpose is to analyze how the amount of ATF and the temperature inside of torque converter affects output torque of the torque converter by using fluid performance tests. To make similar initial starting conditions of the vehicle, Tests were conducted on Sweep mode and the rotating speed of the input side is 0 to 1000 rpm. We used two temperature conditions on the test, one is 40 ℃ and the another is 80 ℃ and measured the output torque changed by ATF and the temperature of the torque converter. When the speed ratio is 0.0 and the ATF volume inside of the torque converter is about 50%, there is almost no output torque. When the speed ratio is 1.0, the output torques of the tests are same regardless of the temperature and ATF volume of the torque converter.

Welded parts between the front cover and the lug of torque converter requir endurance to withstand strong torque generated by an engine. Bead geometry is an important factor which decides the mechanical property of welded. Bead geometry is affected by welding current, voltage and speed. Therefore it is important to select an appropriate welding condition. This project proposes the method of selecting the most proper welding condition when welding lug on the front cover of Torque converter. It also suggests the bead width and height of bead which can decide the quality of welding by utilizing response surface method which is one of the designs of experiments and the most appropriate welding condition by using Desirability Function.
