Metallic bipolar plates of the MCFC(Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell) are composed of one center plate and two shielded slot plates. The unit cell of the shielded slot plate is trapezoidal in shape. From the analytical analysis of the simplified model of the unit cell, the stiffness and strength of simple deformation are obtained. FEM simulations were conducted to verify the analytical result. The homogenized material model for a plastically compressible anisotropic core is employed to simulate the mechanical behavior of the unit cell. The coefficients of the orthotropic elasticity and the yield criterion are obtained from the FEM simulation of the unit cell. The comparisons of the mechanical behaviors are made between the unit cell and the homogenized model.

The unit cell of the molten carbonate fuel cell(MCFC) is composed of metallic bipolar plate, anode, cathode and matrix. Among these, the shielded slot plate (the current collector) supports the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and the stack mechanically. Therefore the compression properties of the shielded slot plate are necessary to design the MCFC stack. In order to analyze the compression properties, experiments were conducted using the unit cell, the anode shielded slot plate(ACC) and the cathode shielded slot plate(CCC). For the properties of the MCFC stack, 4 layers of the metallic bipolar plate were used. The deformation of the MCFC stack depends on the deformation of the cathode shielded slot plate.

Application of Magnesium alloy AZ31 is increasing due to its light-weight property. Formability of AZ3l sheet in room temperature is very low due to its hexagonal closed-packed(HCP) crystal structure. Among various metal forming processes, incremental sheet forming was introduced to form AZ3l sheet. In order to increase the formability of AZ3l utilizing incremental sheet forming in room temperature, two external heat sources of near infrared lamp and heated tool are used. The angle of the cup shape specimen was shaped to be more than 60°. The effect of anisotropic property of AZ3l sheets was reduced by the proposed process.

The shielded slop plates of the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) have a sheared corrugated trapezoidal pattern. In the FEM simulation of the shielded slot plate, the user material subroutine VUMAT is employed for the implementation of the ductile fracture criterion in the commercial FEM software ABAQUS. The experimental results of the shearing process were compared with the FEM simulation results in order to determine the critical damage value. Using this ductile fracture criterion, the three dimensional forming process of the shielded slot plate was numerically simulated. The effects of the shearing process on the forming process of the shieded slot plates were examined through FEM simulation and experiments. After springback the sheets shwo the warping due to the residual stress of the forming process.

Application of Magnesium alloy sheets are increasing due to its light weight property. However, the bendability of the AZ31 sheets in the room temperature is very low due to its hexagonal closed packed(HCP) crystral structure. In the bending process of the AZ31 sheets at the room temperature, the minimum bending radius is 4~6. An external linear heater(2000kw infrared lamp) was used in order to increase the bendability. The minimum bending radius is decreased less than 2 by using the external heat source.

Metallic bipolar plate for molten carbonate fuel cell(MCFC) is composed of the shielded slot plate and the center plate. Among these, the center plate plays an important role in gas sealing. Therefore, manufacturing of the center plate is considered one of the key issues in MCFC. The center plate is manufactured by bending process. In bending process, springback and recoiling are two main problems. By using the modified punch shape with ‘step’ springback and recoil are reduced. The aim of this article is to find the effect of modified punch shape. So, the bending stress along thickness direction and material direction were investigated using FEM.
