This study was conducted to investigate the effect of hyaluronic acid (HA) on prevention of abdominal adhesions depending on various concentrations thereof by inducing an abrasion experimentally in the cecum of rats. Each group was consisted of 10 rats, and 40 rats were divided into 4 groups comprising the saline treatment group, HA 0.4% treated group, 0.6% treated group, and 0.8% treated group. And abrasion was caused in the cecum by using dry gauze and thereby, adhesion was induced. On 7 days after the operation, adhesions of each region were evaluated into the range of 0-4. Significant difference was found in the adhesion score between the control group and each experimental group (P<0.05). Also, HA 0.4% treatment group showed the lowest adhesion score (P<0.05). In the light of the above results, HA 0.4% solution was more effective on prevention of adhesion than HA 0.6% and 0.8% solution.
($NiAl+Ni_3Al$) 2상 합금의 미세 조직과 기계적 특성에 관한 연구

The Ni-Al intermetallic compound that has the greatest potential to be commercialized shows the high ductility at room temperature with the addition of boron, but has extremely low ductility at high temperature and oxidation environment. On this research work, the changes of microstructure and compressive fracture properties were studied in ($NiAl+Ni_3Al$) two-phase alloys. The precipitation behavior of $Ni_3Al$ after solution treatment at $1300^\circC$ for 14hrs and aging treatment at $800^{\circ}C$ for 14hrs was varied with Al content in ($NiAl+Ni_3Al$) two-phase alloys. These microstructure could be modified dramatically by suitable heat treatments. Martensite or martensite plus $Ni_3Al$ microstructure was obtained upon oil quenching from $1300^\circC$. Aging of Martensite at $800^\circC$ resulted in the $Ni_3Al$ plus NiAl phase. The compressive fracture strength and compressive fracture strain were improved by the $Ni_3Al$ plus NiAl phase mixtures at room temperature and $1100^\circC$. Microcracks are observed mostly in the region of NiAl and the interface of $NiAl-Ni_3Al$ phase after compressive test at room temperature. In the case of high temperature compressive test, microcracks are formed in the region of $Ni_3Al$ phase.

Purpose : To compare the usefulness of ultrasonography in follow up evaluation after the Ilizarov procedurewith that of plain radiography. Materials and Methods : We analyzed ultrasound findings in twelve patients who hadundergone the Ilizarov procedure, and retrospectively compared the results with the findings of plain radiography.The procedure was performed due to post-traumatic limb deformity or non-union(nine of twelve patients), congenitalpseudoarthrosis(one case), sequelae of poliomyelitis(one case), and short stature(one case). The patients' meanage was 29 years ; eleven of twelve were male. Ten of twelve procedures were performed on the tibia and two on thefemur. After 7-10 days, distraction was initiated at a rate of 0.25mm four times a day. Ultrasonography wasperformed with a 5-10 MHz linear or convex transducer ; new bone formation was defined as dotted or linearechogenic foci within a hypoechoic distraction gap. Initial ultrasonographic examination was performed 2-4 weeksafter distraction, and the results were compared with those of plain radiography. Color Doppler imaging wasperformed in three cases. Results : On ultrasonograms, new bone formation was initially detected 18-29(mean, 23)days after distraction, and on plain radiographs, 37-58(mean, 45) days after this procedure ; ultrasonography thusdetected new bone formation at least three weeks earlier than did plain radiography. Complication after theIlizarov procedure were four cysts at the distraction site, and one pin site infection, as seen on ultrasonograms.None of these four cysts, the size of which was 12-22mm(mean, 17mm), was visible on plain radiographs. In one casein which a cyst was present, ultrasound-guided aspiration was performed. Color Doppler examination was performedin three of twelve patients, and in all three, periosteal vascularity at the edge of the distracted gap was seento be preserved. Conclusion : After the Ilizarov bone lengthening procedure, ultrasound appears to be useful forfollow-up examination. New bone formation, as well as complications, can be detected earlier ; it can indicatewhether ultrasound-guided interventional procedure is required, and if combined with color Doppler study, is ableto detect the periosteal blood supply. Further evaluation of the clinical significance of preserved periostealblood supply seems however, to be needed.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to present clinical practice guidelines for nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC).Methods: Data related to western and oriental medical treatment of NPC were collected using various search engines such as Google Scholar, KIOM OASIS, PUBMED, and the library of Woosuk University.Results: In recent studies, applying combined oriental and western medicine has been shown to improve survival, quality of life, and immune function and to decrease side effects with respect to NPC. However, there still is no objective and systematic clinical guideline for NPC, so we have proposed one. This study will be meaningful in establishing clinical practice guidelines of Korean medicine for NPC.Conclusion: Further studies related to Korean medicine are needed to develop more advanced clinical practice NPC guidelines.

In this study, the design of compound smart materials hydraulic pump that can be applied to a small-medium size UAV having a limited space envelope and weight has been conducted. Compound Smart Material Pump(CSMP) proposed in this paper is composed of a pressurize pump and a flow pump for supplying the high pressure and fluid displacement to overcome the disadvantages of the piezoelectric actuator which has a small strain. Though this compound smart material pump has been designed as small size and lightweight as possible, it can sequentially supply the sufficient large flow rate and pressure required for the brake operation. For the design of CSMP, about 2,700 kg (6,000 lb) class fixed wing manned aircraft was selected. Based on the established requirements, the design of the CSMP have been done by strength, vibration, and fluid flow analysis.

The failed tube received for this study has been used for approximately 10 year at $330^{\circ}C$ in a steam production boiler tube was fractured in the transversed direction to tube length, and fracture mode was typically intergranulas type without the plastic deformation. The fracture surface was covered by the oxide scale formed from the intermal high pressure steam at high temperature. The microstructure was not nearly thermal-degraded during the service. From this result, we can conclude that the oxide film was proferentialy formed into the grainboundary and this grainboundary oxide film was brittle-fractured by the thermal stress in the longitudinal direction to the tube brittle intergranular fracture mode.
