Neurolytic splanchnic nerve block is effective for treatment of intractable upper abdominal cancer in. The possibility of neurologic complication cannot be completely precluded. A 53 year-oldofemale patient with hepatoma and lung metastasis was submitted for splanchnic nerve b1ock with alcohol. Splanchnic nerve block was performed under radiologic control by image intensifier without any difficulty during procedure. One day after the block, she com- plained 0f numbness with sensory deficit in bilateral inguinal area. Neurologic examination re- vealed that asymmetrical anesthesia, hypoesthesia at T,-L. She was discharged 70 days after the block with partial improvement. The possibility of alcohol spreading to the low theracic and upper lumbar somatic nerves cannot be excluded.

Authenticity in Movies

The use of "authenticity" in teaching foreign languages has been accepted as an effective teaching method. It is believed that such authentic texts provide learners with a language-rich environment and they play a key role in promoting communicative skills. McGarry (1995) argues that authentic texts can enable learners to work independently of the teacher if used extensively and appropriately. In other words, authentic texts are useful self-study materials. McGarry calls this "leaner autonomy," which means that learners should take more responsibility of their own study of the foreign language than done otherwise before. Taking consideration of the unique characteristics of the individual learner and the student-centered method of study, further research on this authenticity will be compared with these new trends in education. In this paper, therefore, one suggestion made is that movies are the best way to foster an authentic language-rich environment and to understand the relationship between language form and the communication function in an EFL setting like in Korea. In order to accomplish this, this paper will first clarify the definition of "authenticity." Second, it will examine why authentic texts are useful in language acquisition. Third, it will explain why contrived language texts are not appropriate materials in the development of communicative skills as defined in terms of authenticity. And lastly, the following three questions about the use of movies will be discussed: why, what and how.

자연재해 증가 지역의 국제협력 지원 방안을 위한 방글라데시 사례 연구

자연재해 저감에 관한 논의들이 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기후변화에 의해 자연재해가 더욱 심화됨 에 따라 재해에 취약하게 노출되어 있는 방글라데시를 사례지역으로 재해의 유형을 파악하고, 우리나라의 재해저감 기술과 방재관련 기법 등을 응용하여 국제원조의 지원 방안을 모색하였다. 방글라데시는 국토의 1/3이 해수면보다 낮 기 때문에 배수가 어려우며, 조수 파동과 해수 침투, 사이클론의 위험이 복합적으로 나타나는 지리적인 특성을 지니고 기후변화로 인한 자연재해의 피해가 매년 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 특히 피해가 집중되는 해안지역은 해수면상승의 위협과 3년 주기로 심각한 사이클론의 피해가 일어나며, 상대적으로 빈곤한 사람들이 거주하는 지역으로 인명피해가 크게 일어나는 지역으로써, 재난의 피해를 저감하기 위해 국제적 원조를 필요로 하고 있다. 우리나라의 선진화된 기술 과 자연재해저감 기법을 지원함으로써 개도국의 자연재난에 의한 피해를 감소시키는 데 일조를 하는 것은 국제사회에 서 협력 구도를 정립하는 데 중요한 역할을 할 것이다. International society has been making a lively discussion about natural disaster by climate change to mitigate natural hazard centering around intra-government association. This study dealt with a strategic mitigation and technical adaptation to support a habitual natural disaster region such as Bangladesh in terms of international cooperation for assistance to protect against the natural hazard. The land-cover on scale of one third of Bangladesh is situated lower than sea level that causes habitual flooding accident which gets increasing in the strengthen every single year. Most of people lives around exterior sea coast being faced with disaster of abnormal storm forming every three year cycle. Especially, the socio-economic status of the people in the coast is usually very low, and it need to get help from international cooperation aid. Therefor, the case study for the vulnerability of natural disaster in Bangladesh on geographical analysis is meaningful to join the international cooperation taking a part of role on technical support and education for adaptation of the natural disaster.

미국 드라마를 활용한 수업모형에 대한 연구

This paper sheds light on how American soap opera can be used in language classes by suggesting a teaching model. The model helps dispel the belief that words used in American soap opera are too difficult for students with low intermediate proficiency. More specifically, the model largely focuses on the use of nouns for two reasons: (a) nouns are readily accessible even for students with low intermediate proficiency, and (b) first and second language acquisition theories support that nouns are typically acquired first in the process of language learning. In addition, the model promotes different skills of language, i.e., speaking, listening, and reading. For speaking, simple and easy routines and expressions are given to students who are then instructed to practice and internalize them. For listening, a cloze test is provided with emphasis on nouns with which students are already familiar, followed by dictation of the short routines and expressions. For reading, students are asked to read the drama's script accompanied by translation, with focus on grammar and pronunciation. The pedagogical suggestion rooted in whole language learning can offer an instructive and enjoyable learning experience.

표현력 강화를 위한 언어자각력 증진에 관한 연구

This paper emphasizes the importance of developing an initial Language Awareness in order to build up the ability of learners to use English language expressions. Three sample activities designed to promote Language Awareness were developed and through the involvement of thirteen participants their effectiveness was studied. The participants learned English expressions by watching movies and television sitcoms and engaging in different activities based on the input they had experienced: discussion activities, discussion plus caption activities, and discussion plus silent-viewing caption activities. According to this study, discussion plus silent-viewing caption activities appear to be the most effective in promoting Language Awareness. It is suggested that this strategy is more effective in producing the successful acquisition of expressions as it allows learners to focus on language forms and is more supportive from the viewpoint of psycholinguistics.

영화 선정기준에 관한 연구

Using movies to teach English has become popular of late. The appeal of movies is understandable given that so many students enjoy watching film. However, if the EFL lecturer is to satisfy the goal of teaching English, then 3 criteria need to be satisfied in selecting films for use in the classroom. First, the movies considered should be popular and current so that they appeal to students. Second, the movie scripts should be interesting and contain usable English language. At this point in the selection process, some movies will have been discarded and others added. Third, the instructor needs to examine the films in terms of what I want students to learn from this film and how the items can selected for learning be practiced ; the final stage of sorting takes place in consideration of this last criterion. After working out activities for the third criterion, the instructor has a film lesson that satisfies popular demand and interest and is based on sound pedagogical objectives.

GIS를 이용한 환경오염의 예측 모델

본 연구는 GIS를 사용하여 메사추세츠 동부의 보스턴시에 위치한 넷폰셋 강 유역의 수질 오염 정도를 측정하기 위한 것이다. 관련된 오염물질로써 CDOM을 축출하여 지표면의 유수가 다양한 토지이용과 연계되어 바닷물로 흘러들 어가는 과정을 예측하고 이를 모형화하게 된다. CDOM의 축출과 분석은 관련학과의 도움을 받아 그 결과를 산출하고, 이를 GIS의 공간분석 기법을 이용하여 지역과 지형적인 특성에 따라 오염물질이 전해지면서 토지이용에 어떠한 변화가 생기는지를 관측하게 된다. 수계의 형성과 강의 흐름, 그리고 토지이용 자료가 연구를 위해 분석 자료로 사용되었고, ArcGIS 9.2를 사용, 공간분석 기법을 통해 하위 분수계와 유동점, 토지이용 구획을 산출하게 된다. 이는 GIS 기법이 지형분석과 오염물질의 이동을 분석하는데 어떻게 활용될 수 있는지를 고찰하는 것으로써 의미있는 연구가 될 것이다. Colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is an important component of ocean color that can be used as an invaluable tool in water quality and ocean color studies. With the largest source of coastal CDOM appearing to be from freshwater discharge into the ocean, coastal predictive models will do much to refine our knowledge about major processes that control CDOM distributions in coastal waters and provide a better insight into the global carbon cycle. This study aims at developing a GIS-based watershed-scale predictive model of CDOM distributions in Neponset river watersheds that can be used to appraise our understanding of CDOM sources and distributions in coastal waters and predict the response of CDOM concentration to changes in land use patterns. Weighting factors are developed for CDOM freshwater sources after extensive groundtruthing from various landuse types in the watershed. This model makes use of a publicly available DEM (Digital elevation model) as the base data for analysis. Stream networks, discharge, and land use data are used from public repositories while sub- watershed delineation, pour- points, and land use parcels are generated using Spatial Analysis of ArcGIS 9.2 to estimate the CDOM loading from various sources to the lower tributaries of rivers. The Neponset Watershed in eastern Massachusetts is selected as the site for development of the model.

영화영어 교수방안 연구

This paper is concerned with what (and how) to teach through movies. It provides an up-to-date survey of the second language literature on the role of fixed expressions, which are very important in learning a second language and make a conversation go with ease. The movie "When a Man Loves a Woman" is chosen in order to collate a list of fixed expressions in a part of the movie scenario. Using this scenario, the ratio of fixed expressions to creative construction is examined and the role of fixed expressions is described. Finally, there will be some suggestions about how to teach these expressions (in the classroom).
