Nature was regarded as pure matter by the development of natural science in Shelley‘s age. Thus Romantic poets could no longer look for the nature spirits on the farther side of appearances. Instead, they tried to look for them within themselves. So did Shelley. Shelley’s view on nature is well put in his idea of Necessity. The doctrine of Necessity primarily rests on the assumption that there is an undeniable relationship between two entities or one entity and its modes. Shelley adhered to his belief in Necessity from his first major poem, Queen Mab, to his last poem, The Triumph of Life. The idea emphasizes the poet’s freewill and responsibility for the community. It is ‘Ode to the West Wind’ that proposes this kind of Necessity strongly. This paper aims to study nature through the idea of Necessity in ‘Ode to the West Wind. In this poem, Shelley recognizes a poet’s responsibility for his society by reading ‘Destroyer and Preserver,’ the double properties of Necessity with his imagination. (Jeonbuk National University)

Because the Industrialization and the Darwinism had destroyed all belief of Hardy's times, he believed that there was nothing that did not change in the world. Owing to this reason, the view of life which his poems and novels contained, he said, was really a series of fugitive impressions which he had never tried to co-ordinate. Thus, his poems and Jude the Obscure consisted of the "unadjusted impressions" of different characters. If a persistent change was one of the important principles in his times, such a change would be the reality which Hardy wanted to represent. Levine define that realism exists as a process, responsive to the changing nature of reality as the culture understood it. If we agree to Levine's opinion, we may say that he is a realist. Because he intended to find persistent wandering impressions in his changing times, he didn't present any resolution to and judgement on the problems of his own times. So his poems and Jude the Obscure can be valued Hardy's own effort that allowed his unadjusted and personal impressions about the atmosphere of his ages to have a shape and unity of their own.

The effect of external leakage on the acoustic performance of Helmholtz resonators is experimentally and numerically investigated. The transmission loss of the Helmholtz resonator with a circular perforated hole is measured by using an impedance tube setup. The experimental results are then compared with one-dimensional analytical and three-dimensional numerical results. As the size of the hole increases, the peak of the transmission loss shifts to higher frequency, especially for the holes on the cavity. While the transmission loss is almost independent of the location of the hole on the cavity, the impact of the hole location on the neck on the transmission loss is not negligible. The results show that one-dimensional analytical method can predict the overall trends, whereas three-dimensional numerical method is necessary for more accurate predictions.

Acoustic behavior of dissipative silencers with splitters was analyzed by using 3-dimensional commercial software. An impedance tube setup was used to obtain the flow resistivity of mineral wool. The resistivity is used as an input parameter for the calculation of insertion loss of silencers. The comparison of insertion loss predictions with the experimental results shows reasonable agreements. For large silencers, it needs a large number of elements especially at high frequencies and thus long computation time. To reduce computation time without sacrifice of accuracy, predictions for various partial models were presented. Partial model can be used as a representation of the full model with relatively short computation time. It can be concluded from more predictions with different flow resistivity that lower flow resistivity may decrease the insertion loss, but higher resistivity slightly improves it.
Study on the Dynamic Characteristics of a Manual Transmission Using Linear Models

Torsional vibrations, such as the gear rattle of the manual transmission in vehicle systems, are correlated with the firing stroke from the engine. These vibro-impacts can be examined based upon linear time-invariant analysis. In order to understand the gear dynamics, a specific manual transmission with a front-engine front-wheel drive configuration is investigated. A method to reduce the degrees of freedom is suggested based upon the eigensolutions and frequency response functions, which will lead to the development of an efficient matrix size. The dynamic characteristics of single- and dual-mass flywheels are then compared. The effect of the dual-mass flywheel is investigated based upon the mobility analysis, which will lead to understanding of the concepts for avoiding vibro-impacts. A linear time-invariant system model is examined by employing the effective clutch stiffness from a two-stage clutch damper. Thus, the relationship between the dynamic characteristics and the clutch damper can be predicted by assuming a combination of different stage stiffness levels.

Based on ISO 7235, an experimental setup to measure the acoustic performance of splitter type dissipative silencers are fabricated. The length of each duct, sound source, microphone locations, modal filter, and anechoic termination are considered in the design of this setup. The modal filter is a particularly important factor because it affects the limit of measurement, which is also determined by the amount of flanking transmission of sound generated by the sound source to microphones. The effects of absorptive materials, media which covers the materials, and the number of splitters on the noise reduction of the sample silencers are experimentally investigated. The insertions loss of silencers with media and higher number of splitters increases, especially at higher frequencies.
