Puritans were English Calvinists, and therefore were influenced by the thought of John Calvin. The spirituality of Calvin was very broad. For Calvin, the sources of Christian spirituality are nature, history, culture and the Scriptures. He emphasized Christian life in the Church, prayer, meditation on the future life, participation in the sacraments and participation in the civil life. The spirituality of Puritans was broad as much as that of Calvin. For Puritans there was no distinction between sacred and secular; all creation, so for as they were concerned, was sacred, and all activities, of whatever kind, must be sanctified, that is, done to the glory of God. So, the Puritans became men and women of order, prayerful, purposeful, practical. Seeing life whole, they integrated contemplation with action, worship with work, labor with rest, love of God with love of neighbor and self, personal with social identity. The republicanism of Puritans was influenced by the political thought of Calvin. Calvin had a very positive concept of free civil government. According to Calvin, as regards the forms of government, a system compounded of aristocracy and democracy far excels all others. Also, according to Calvin, it is much better to live in a free state than to live under a prince. According to Calvin, the magistrates of the people, appointed to restrain the willfulness of kings, ought to resist the tyrants. James Harrington was a leading philosopher of republicanism. According to Harrington, magistrates ought to be elected to office for short terms, usually a year, and ought to be ineligible to immediate reelection. For him election ought to be by ballot, to secure a free choice by electors. Harrington emphasized his “agrarian law,” which amounted merely to a rule requiring the division of large estates among several heirs in parts having not more than £2,000 annual income. John Milton was another philosopher of republicanism. He defended the freedom of publication. He was an outspoken defender of the death penalty for a tyrannous king. Furthermore, He regarded constraint in matters of belief and the support of the clergy from public revenues as chief causes of religious corruption. For him, Hereditary power is unnatural. All he had to propose was that the people should lay aside their prejudices and selfish interests and elect the “best men” of the nation to a perpetual council, in which the members shall hold office for life. For Algernon Sidney, absolute monarchy was a great political evil. It is the divine right of kings that Sidney strongly opposed. Sidney believed that the individuals have the right to choose their own form of government and that, if that government became corrupt, the people retained the power to abolish it and form another. Sidney also argued that for a valid civil government to exist, it must be formed by general and voluntary consent. This suggests a limited civil government whose primary purpose is to render legal justice through its court system and provide for the safety of its citizens.

The soteriology of WCC is very comprehensive. It has a personal, a communal, and a cosmic aspect. WCC emphasizes not only personal salvation but also social salvation. It also insists on the salvation of all things. According to WCC, a focus and concentration only on present realities, with no sense of future hope or judgment, ultimately diminishes the richness of Christianity. According to WCC, the lifegiving Holy Spirit is active in the church and the world. The ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in the whole of creation affirms that the healing power of God transcends all limits of places and times and is at work inside as well as outside the Christian church transforming humanity and creation in the perspective of the world to come. According to WCC, for Christians, salvation is offered by the incarnation, which is the unique expression of God’s saving will and is in a life of unity with Christ. Therefore, in accordance with WCC, we cannot point any other way of salvation than Jesus Christ. However, according to WCC, at the same time, we cannot set limits to the saving power of God. As a result of interreligious dialogue, WCC acknowledges that salvation and the ultimate ends sought by other religions are not the same things.

In the past, by the influence of the Enlightenment, the western history was interpreted as consisting of the period of the ancient civilization, the medieval dark age, and the modern restoration of the civilization. In this perspective, Renaissance was considered as the revival of the ancient culture or the forerunner of the modern culture. And the Reformation was regarded as returning to the medieval age, and the suspension of the modern culture which began with the Renaissance. However, the interpretation of the Enlightenment of the medieval age was challenged by “the revolt of the medievalists.” The medievalists used “the renaissance of the twelfth century,” or “the medieval humanism.” Nowadays the historians do not think the medieval period as the dark age. The historians, however, do not deny the distinctiveness of the Renaissance. According to Eva Matthews Sanford, secularism, individualism, and criticism of the established authority are much stressed as distinguishing characteristics of the Renaissance. Some scholars argued that the Reformation was basically at odds with the Renaissance, and others insisted that the Reformation was the “theological fulfillment of the Renaissance.” The Reformers were influenced by the Renaissance, and they criticized the church and tried to reform the church on the basis of the works of the humanists. The Reformers, however, did not entirely follow the humanists of the Renaissance. They criticized the secularism of the humanists. In short, the medieval age was the period of “heteronomy,” the Renaissance was the period of “autonomy,” and the Reformers emphasized the culture of “theonomy.”
