『대나무 숲을 멀리하고』의 비평에 관한 몇 가지 문제

요코 카와시마 왓킨스의 소설 ”대나무 숲을 멀라하고“는 1986년 미국에서 출판되었다. 저자인 요코 자신이 11살 때 겪었던 경험을 토대로 쓴 자서전적 소설로서 그 시기는 2차 대전 말기 1945년 78월경이고그 무대는 조선의 함경북도 나남 (오늘의 청진)시 인근이다. 일본의 패망으로 인해서 요코의 가족은 아버지와 오빠를 남겨둔 채로 엄마와 언니인 코와 요코 자신 셋이서 열차를 타고, 걷기도 하고 하면서 수많은 역경을 겪어가며 서울을 거쳐 부산으로 해서 결국 일본으로 탈출해 가는 과정을 그리고 있다. 이 소설이 출판되자마자 미국 내에서는, 특히 청소년 문학으로서 큰 호응을 받게 된 반면에 재미 한인 사회와 한국에서는 크게 비판을 받았던 것이 사실이다. 한국에서는 좀 심하게 표현하자면, 이 소설이 거짓이라는 주장이다. 지리와 토양적 특성을 가지고 볼 때 이 소설 속에 자주 등장하는 “대나무 숲”은 맞지 않으며, 소설 속에서 나오는 미군의 폭격도 당시 함경도 지방에서는 없었다는 주장이 제기되기도 한다. 또한 아직 일본군의 지배하에 있었던 당시로서는 한국인의 일본인에 대한 성폭행 내지는 성추행 같은 것이 불가한 일이었음에도 불구하고 이 소설 속에서는 묘사되고 있다고 지적되고 있다. 이 논문은 이와 같은 문제 제기에 대하여 본질적으로 내재적 읽기라는 것으로 접근하고자 하였다. 즉 소설 속의 어느 한 단락만을 떼어놓고 논하기 보다는 소설전체라는 맥락 속에서 제기된 문제에 접근하고자 노력하였다. 저자는 이 소설을 쓰면서 한일의 역사적 관계, 특히 식민지시대의 한일 관계사를 특별히 염두에 두고 쓰지는 않았다. 따라서 가해자 일본과 피해자 한국이라는 이분법적 틀 속에 이 소설의 구도를 잡지 아니하였다. 그러면서도 당시 군국주의, 제국주의 일본의 전반적인 국가 시책에 무조건 지지. 찬양. 고무하는 입장 대신에 인간성에 기초하는 보편적인 개념들, 즉 평화와 사랑과 행복을 추구하면서 전쟁반대를 명시적으로 밝히고 있음을 본다. 본국인 일본이 추구했던 국가이념에 따르지 않았던 것처럼 일본으로부터 조직적으로 받았던 한국인의 피해나 고통, 어려움 등에 대해서도 특별한 의도로써 염두에 두고 있지는 않았던 것 같다. 다른 한편으로 대나무 숲의 존재여부 및 미군폭격의 진실성 여부, 성폭행의 유무 등의 이슈들에 대해서는 픽션으로서 작가의 상상력의 문제 내지는 기억의 한계, 그리고 소설과 역사적 사실과의 관계 등으로 설명이 되어야 할 것으로 본다. In sharp contrast to the great plaudits it received in the U.S. when published in 1986, Yoko Kawashima Watkins` So Far From the Bamboo Grove was severely criticized and even denounced in Korea for some factual errors in the story. Among them were issues of the bamboo grove of Nanam (today`s Cheongjin), the U.S. air strikes in North Hamkyong Province, and Koreans` sexual attacks on Japanese civilians, to take only a few. Dealing with such issues, this paper premises that Yoko`s story is not part of any historical document but an autobiographical novel based on the experience she herself had through the lens of only an 11yearoldgirl. When taking this into account, this paper contends that the abovementioned issues may come to be of no significance. As a fiction, if it is not necessary to refer to any of geological and/or climatological analysis of Nanam, North Hamkyong Province, it does not matter whether or not bamboos, which are repeatedly depicted in the story, can actually grow in the area. If it is accepted that this will be a fiction but not a documentary record, then it may also be available to permit the scenes of the U.S. air strikes on evacuating trains to be portrayed using what she had been told and educated during the war time. As to the third issue of Koreans` sexual attacks on Japanese civilians, this paper does not agree with the claim that such a thing could not occur since Korea was still strictly under the Japanese law and order in the months of July and August of 1945. In addition to this all, this paper points out that even though nowhere in the novel is a description of Japan as an imperial assailant and Korea as a victim, it is not true that the Yoko`s family was unconditionally in support of Tojo, the war in particular, and Japanese militarism in general.

ISA 기반 시·공간적 학습을 통한 요리 동작 인식

기계학습(machine learning) 기술을 이용해서 영상 데이터로부터 동작 패턴을 인식하는 연구에 있어서, 최근 들어 무감독학습(unsupervised learning)의 중요성이 부각되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 ISA (Independent Subspace Analysis) 알고리즘에 기반한 최신 무감독학습 기법인 ‘Stacked Convolutional ISA’ 알고리즘[1]을 이용해서 샌드위치를 만드는 인간의 동작을 촬영한 영상 데이터를 분석, 동작 인식을 행하였다. 데이터로부터 직접 유용한 특징들을 학습하는 무감독학습 기법의 장점을 그대로 나타내어, 해당 알고리즘은 제한적인 학습 및 테스트 샘플 조건 하에서도 인상적인 성능을 나타냈다. 반면 요리동작에 있어서는 손동작 자체를 인식하는 것 이외에도 현재 손에 쥐어진 도구나 재료의 종류를 인식하는 것이 중요한데, 이러한 문맥 인식(context recognition)은 향후 추가적으로 연구해야 할 과제로 남아있다. In the research of action recognition from video data based on machine learning, unsupervised learning approach has recently been spotlighted. In this paper, we adopted ‘stacked convolutional ISA’ algorithm, a state-of-the-art unsupervised learning technique based on independent subspace analysis (ISA) algorithm that has recently been suggested in [1], to the human cooking action recognition from video data. The algorithm extracted useful spatio-temporal features directly from the video data, which can be regarded as the most significant advantage of unsupervised learning approach, resulting in impressive performance despite of the restricted number of training and test sets. In human cooking action recognition, it is imperative to recognize the identity of cooking utensils or food materials currently held in hands besides the hand action itself. This sort of context recognition remains open to the future study.

이 조사보고서는 일제강점기에 대학에서 지리학을 연마한 후에 보통중고등학교에서 교사로, 광복 후에는 서울대학교에서 교수로 재직한 정갑의 생애와 연구 활동을 정리한 것이다. 그는 한국전쟁 와중에 북한으로 납북당하여 그 후 그의 활동은 아직까지 공식적으로 알려져 있지 않다. 그러나 광복 이후 그가 번역한 지리서와 지리교과서를 통하여 그가 추구하려던 지리학의 의도를 추적할 수 있다. This survey report is about the life and works of a geographer named Chung Kap, who received formal geography education from a Japanese college. After his return to Korea, he taught at a high school, and after the end of the World War II he became a professor at Seoul National University. However, during the Korean war he was kidnapped to North Korea and then his life was formally unknown. His major works include Korean translation of books on physical and human geography, and several school textbooks, which provide an access to his geographic writings.

1901년 제주민란 이야기

110년 전 제주 땅에서 벌어진 엄청난 비극인 제주민란은 제주도라는 작은 섬에서 일어난 단순한 민란이 아니다. 19세 말 조선의 쇄국정책이 붕괴되면서 서양세력이 들어오고, 이에 발맞춰 프랑스가 주축이 되어 천주교가 들어오게 된다. 저물어가는 국운이었던 조선에서 프랑스를 업고 들어온 천주교 세력은 조선 민중의 삶 속에서 막강한 힘을 과시하게 된다. 이때 구마실 신부를 중심으로 제주에 들어온 천주교는 사실상 치외법권적 권한 행사를 하면서 기존의 제주의 전통과 풍습과 충돌하게 된다. 특히 중앙정부에서 내려온 봉세관이 천주교 세력과 결탁함에 따라 이에 대한 토착 대항세력으로 상무사가 조직되어 갈등이 심화된다. 급기야 천주교 쪽에서는 제주 민중에 대해 발포까지 하게 되고, 이에 대한 민중들의 천주교인 학살참극이 일어나게 된다. 당시 새로이 전개되는 국제 질서 속에서 이 제주민란은 제주와 서양이라는 두 문화의 충돌이며, 혹은 신당을 중심으로 하는 제주의 토속 신앙과 천주교라는 외래 종교 간의 충돌이라는 해석도 가능하다. 특히 당시 천주교인들의 제주 민중들에 대한 인식은 종교적 관점에서 ‘사탄의 무리’ 정도로 심히 왜곡되어 있었다. 이러한 충돌은 새로 유입된 신흥 종교가 수많은 세월에 걸쳐 역사와 토착문화에 뿌리를 두고 있는 신당을 일방적으로 타파하려는 데에서 나타난 결과라고 해석할 수 있다. 천주교, 더 나아가서 한국의 기독교가 힘을 과시하며 선교해서는 성공할 수 없음을 일깨워 주는 역사의 교훈이라고 할 수 있다. This paper aims at examining the features and structure of the Jeju Uprising in 1901. The latter part of the 19th century was the time of transition from the seclusion policy to the open-door policy in Choson. The opening of Choson to Japan in 1876 was followed by her openings to other western countries such as the US, UK, Germany, Italy, and then to France in 1886. With this general atmosphere around the century, the Choson dynasty was forced to accept the Roman Catholicism, which had been severely suffered. Such being the case, the French Catholic priests enjoyed their own extraterritorial rights on the island of Jeju as well as in the mainland, It is under this situation that some people on the island were on the side of the Roman Catholicism, which tried to abolish Jeju’s traditional customs and religion chiefly based on shamanism. The Jeju uprising is, in this respect, characterized by the clash between Jeju’s old traditional practice and the new western religion, and as such the conflict between the two different cultures. As one of the modern tragedies that occurred on the island, this uprising gave rise to an ill feeling against christianity in general, resulting in the lowest rate of evangelism in Korea.

This paper is for the carbon black grade analysis technique to understand the damping rubber properties. Other analysis method reported by ASTM and another paper is not enough to predict carbon black grade of vulcanized rubber product. In this paper, unknown carbon black grade in the vulcanized damping rubber was analyzed successfully by the systematic analysis methods. The ultramicrotome pretreatment method, TEM analysis method and FEG-SEM analysis method were used for this purpose.

This study is on the electrocatalyst of MEA analysis technique to understand the degradation phenomenon in PEMFC. The ultra-microtome pretreatment method, FEG-SEM and TEM analysis methods were used for this purpose. Through these analysis methods, Pt coarsening and migration phenomenon is observed not only in electrode site but also in membrane site. This paper explain the catalyst degradation processes through the followings mechanisms ; (1) dissolution of Pt ; (2) diffusion of Pt ion ; (3) Pt ion chemical reduction in membrane ; (4) Coarsening of Pt particles (Ostwald ripening).
