In her theory of art one can find the seed of the technique of light imagery which Willa Sibert Cather (1873-1947) later used consciously and effectively in her fiction. Her light imagery - sun and moon illuminating a landscape, firelight, characters’ eyes flashing brilliantly and rivers and lakes sparkling - is not a decorative frivolity but a vehicle for the meaning and enchancing the emotional experience fo her fiction. Some of the techniques that Willa Cather used for incorporating light imagery into her fiction resemble impressionist painters’ one for using light in their art. Cather’s early criticism reveals her awareness of impressionists’ simplicity or expression and their concern for the effects of light. Attesting to Cather’s belief that humanity be the subject of art, light imagery works to reveal particular attributes of her characters. Particularly in some of her novels light without suggests light within her characters revealing their inner topography. And furthermore light also helps Cather to achieve what she called “The Novel Démeublé” the unfurnished novel.
Vol.18 No.2
Willa Cather’s works have been studied in various ways for past decades. Some say her works are the frontier’s novels and others say lesbian and feminism novels. In this thesis, however, I have dealt Cather's works, O Pioneers', and My Antonia in an ecofeministic point of view. Nowadays, of course, the ecofeminism is different from the authors. They usually described the rights of the women and the equation of the man and woman and how to struggle to get their natural rights. In this paper, I mainly followed point of view of Vandana Shiva, and Maria Mies. They think of the earth as Mother. They insisted that we have to take good care of the natural order and environment problems when we develop the earth. The mother is the resource of all the activities in human life. We can get all the energy from the fully understanding of the natural order and rules. The friendlier we treat the earth, the better life we can get. In O Pionsers! and My Ántonia, I can analyse the facts that two main characters in both works perform their lives keeping the rules and orders of the nature. If they ignored the natural order and the rules, they usually had hard time and difficulties in their lives. We can recognize that Alexandra in O Pioneers1, and Antonia in My Antonia lived very difficult lives but their effort for the earning their livings was very hard and desperate. In case of their forgetting the nature and the earth for the time being or staying away from the country, their lives with their family were even worse than ever. If they kept the natural law and energetic powerful will came from the earth in their minds, their lives would be changed. In that point, we can understand the relationships between human beings and the earth. Also we perceived how the earth in our life, effects us.
Heroine's Changing Image in Rose of Dutcher's Coolly
Vol.31 No.1
The subject matter Hamlin Garland (1860-1940) cared most to write about was the life of farmers on the prairie, especially frontierswomen. His works represent the man's viewpoint toward the new woman and his sympathy with women who try to liberate themselves from social constraints. The “new women” presented in the works of Garland are women at work. Main-Travelled Roads, the well-known collection of short stories written during the course of his earlier writing career, presents a grim image of frontiers women. Later, in the midst of his career, Garland introduced the element of ‘free will’ in his novels about liberated women such as Rose in Rose of Durcher's Coolly Regarding an education and a career as vehicles to independence and self-improvement for women, Garland presented his heroines in his social reform novels as intellectual and professional women. Rose in Rose of Dutcher's Coolly is also aware of her education and career development. They help to strengthen her personality and enable her to accomplish her goals in both her personal and professional life.
Vol.13 No.-
