A subwatershed within Juam Lake was monitored to identify hydrologic and water quality characteristics. Rainfall record was collected and flow rate measurement and water quality sampling were conducted periodically at the watershed outlet. Hydrologic response and pollutant load characteristics were analyzed based on observed data.

A study was carried out to investigate the losses of sediment at a paddy plot located at the southern Korea. The observed amount of precipitation, irrigation, runoff for the experimental paddy plot during the cropping period were 1,030, 566, and 701 mm in 1999 and 1,214, 413, and 710 mm in 2000, respectively. The observed sediment losses from the plot during cropping period were 1,221.3 kg ha^-1 in 1999 and 1,274 kg/ha kg ha^-1 in 2000, respectively.

Runoff and nutrient concentrations were monitored to identify pollutant load characteristics of a sub watershed in the Jooam lake. Observed concentrations of T-N and T-P were 1.445 ~ 3.980mg/ ℓ and 0 - 0.273mg/ ℓ, respectively. Runoff load of T-N, T-P by single storm occurred June 24th 2001 contributed 55% of T-N and 41% T-P of total pollutant load during study period.

In order to investigate effect of irrigation on soil moisture and soybean growth, a experimental plot, which was shielded from precipitation was established. Four different irrigation rates were applied and soil moisture variations were monitored with TDR. Soybean yield and product quality are under scrutiny.

A subwatershed within the Lake Juam was monitored to identify hydrologic and water quality characteristics. Rainfall record was collected and flow rate measurement and water quality sampling were conducted periodically at the watershed outlet. Water quality of storm period was worse than that of base flow period. Nutrient loading from the watershed was governed by only a few storms during study period. Nonpoint source pollution was identified major problem for water quality management in Juam Lake.

Runoff, sediments and nutrient losses were studied under different patterns of paddy field management: (1) fall and spring plowing (PL); (2) fall plowing for half of plot and spring plowing (SPL); (3) no-till for fall and spring plowing (NPL) during the non-cropping period in the southern Korea. Sediment losses from PL plot were 25% more than those from NPL plot. There was significant difference in nutrient losses via runoff water and sediment according to plowing practice (P < 0.01) Losses of total-N, ammonia-N, nitrate-N, total-P from NPL plot were larger than PL and SPL plots during study period. Sediment and total-P losses from SPL plot were close to those of PL plot.

The GLEAMS nutrient submodel was evaluated to predict nutrient losses in surface runoff following application of two rates (9 and 18 t/ha) of poultry litter and a recommended rate of commercial fertilizer on corn plots. Nutrient submodel was evaluated with calibrated runoff and sediment losses to the observed field data. Simulation of nitrogen transformation effects on nitrogen losses in surface runoff did not agree with field data. The model simulated higher NH<sub>4</sub>-N than NO<sub>3</sub>-N losses in surface runoff, while field data showed the opposite.

The study was carried out to investigate the water balance and losses of nutrients from paddy fields during cropping period. The size of paddy fields was 95 ha and the fields were irrigated from a pumping station. The runoff loading was the highest in June because of the high concentrations of nutrients due to applied fertilizer. When the runoff losses of nutrients were compared to applied chemical fertilizer, it was found that 39.1 % to 42.5 % of nitrogen lost via runoff while runoff losses of phosphorus account for 14.5 % to 17 % of the total applied amount during cropping period. When the ratio was calculated between nutrients losses by infiltration and the applied of chemical fertilizer, two year results showed 9.1 % to 10.8 % for nitrogen and 0.5% for phosphorus, respectively.

To devise better development plan, survey was conducted about current Farmer's irrigation Practice on upland in the Youngsan River Irrigation Project District IV. Major upland crops are garlic and onion in this region. Currently, upland irrigation is conducted using ground water. It is found that irrigation interval is 2-3 day for dry-field rice and 3 -7 days for other crop, in general. Whole day is required to irrigate for many farmers due to lack of facilities and water source. Farmers have no intention to change staple crops even after completion of Irrigation Project of Youngsan River District IV.
