Initial design of a tire usually needs to be tuned according to the subjective test of vehicle/tire system. This fine tuning process requires competitive design capability and can be done with trial and error. However, fine tuning to the dynamic characteristics of a vehicle, like ride and handling, can deteriorate primary requirement of tires such as endurance. Due to these reasons, it is very useful for tire designers to have the information on how the design variable changes affect the primary requirement of tires. This type of information sometimes requires a lot of experimental data. This paper reports the application of Taguchi's Robust Design method to the study of effect of construction design variables on speed endurance of tires. Even though Taguchi's method has been extensively used for process design to minimize the effect of parameter variation in the process, it can be applied to management as well as all aspects of engineering. In this paper, Taguchi's method has been applied to prediction of speed endurance of tires as construction variables in initial tire design change.<br/> <br/>

A critical aspect of the performance of tyres for passenger vehicles is the quality of vehicle interior noise as a result of tyre-pavement interaction.Generally. vehicle manufacturers evaluate the noise performance of tyres by subjective tests conducted by skilled test drivers. Drivers rate a tyre on a 1 to 10 point scale with the higher number being better.<br/> For the effective control of the tyre noise, it is necessary to define the relationship of the subjective rating and the objective measurement. in this study the articulation index method is applied to evaluate a tyre noise from objective measurements. The measurement system is built to calculate an articulation index from vehicle interior noise due to a tyre. An articulation index rating is newly introduced to set up the correlation of subjective feeling rating and the articulation index. The results show that AI rating and subjective rating have a good correlation. AI rating can be used for the effetive control and the evaluation of a tyre noise.<br/>

Noise generated by rolling automobile tyres greatly influences the ride comfort of passengers. The characteristics of the tyre noise are majorly determined by the tread pattem of a tire. It is assumed that tyre noise is generated by the resultant force which is made up of a linear superposition of the force produced by each tread pattem element when it contacts with the road surface. For more realistic modeling of the resultant force due to the tread pattem,the uneven distributed contact pressure of a rolling tyre is considered. The contact pressure is measured using the flat bed machine. The simulated results are compared with test results. The predicted accuracy was improved by considering the dynamic contact pressure.<br/>
