With the stringent exhaust emission regulation, precise control of air fuel ratio is one of the most important issues on gasoline engine. Although many a research have been carried out to identify the fuel transport phenomena in a port fueled gasoline engine, complexity of fuel film behavior in the intake port makes it difficult. The fuel film behavior was investigated recently by using visualization method and these gave us qualitative understanding. In this paper, the quantitative measurement method for the port fuel film is studied by using Fast Response Flame Ionization Detector(FRFID). The Fuel film mass on the port wall was measured by using the methods of fuel injection off.injection on and regression.The Fuel film mass was increased with incresing load at the same engine speed.<br/>

A numerical model for the solidification of binary mixture is proposed. Numerical model, which employs enthalpy method, is modified from Continuum model, that is, improved relation is proposed for the Enthalpy - Temperature - Concentration - Liquid Mass Fraction. One dimensional example was selected to verify the proposed model. The results show that the new relation can be applied successfully to the solidification or melting of binary mixture.

In-cylinder flow and mixture formation are key contributor to both idle stability and co mbustion stability at part load of automotive engine. The real time measurements of air-f uel ratio and residual gas fraction in cylinder are particularly important to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms for combustion and emissions, especially during cold sta rt and throttle transient condition.<br/> This paper reports the cycle resolved measurements of residual gas fraction and equivalence ratio near spark plug with cam phasing and its effects on combustion characteristics at part load. The results showed that the effect of intake valve opening on the residual gas fraction was smaller than that of exhaust valve closing because of bumed gas back :low decreases from exhaust port at the same valve overlap. The standard deviation of equivalence ratio near spark plug increased with valve overlap increases and its effect affected the heat release rate, COVimep, etc.<br/>

The flow characteristics of engine intake system are closely related to the engine performance and intake system noise. Therefore many researchers have carried out to improve intake system design in view resistance, dust filtering and flow induced noise. The optimal design of intake system becomes more important as the requirement of high performance and long durability.<br/> In this study, flow rig was set up for the surveying the effect of air cleaner designarameters on the flow resistance and dust filtering. The pressure drop across the air cleanerwas measured. The flow in the air cleaner was visualized by tuft method and dust seeding method to identify dust filtering effect. The flow direction and recirculation zone of dust inside the air cleaner were observed.<br/>
