Purpose: We evaluated whether lipoic acid as antioxidant could inhibit expression of VEGF and STAT3 in experimental diabetic rat retina. Methods: Diabetes was induced chemically by injection of streptozotocin in 12 rats of 18 Sprague-Dawley rats. After induction of diabetes, lipoic acid was injected into the peritonium in 6 rats. So all rats were divided into 3 groups, normal group (n=6), diabetes mellitus (DM) group (n=6), lipoic acid treated group (n=6). The ocular tissue of the rats were collected on 8 weeks after diabetes induction. Difference of VEGF and STAT3 expression was investigated by immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR, western blot. The change of VEGF and STAT3 in lipoic acid treated group were evaluated in these experimental model. Results: The VEGF and STAT3 expression was elevated in diabetic rat retina. The active form STAT3, phosphorylated STAT3 was also elevated. The VEGF and STAT3 expression in lipoic acid treated group was lower than DM group. Conclusions: The lipoic acid could inhibit the VEGF and STAT3 expression in diabetic rat retina.

Recently, the markets of the air conditioner are enlarging. The market size will reach 2.0 billion won in 2000. Electric heat pumps have been utilized as main residential air conditioners. especially in Korea. They cause a surge up electric power demand during summer. Moreover, the use of HCFCs and HFCs causes serious problem to the global environment such as global warming and ozone layer destruction. Absorption chiller and heater could solve such problems. It was built and tested for analyzing the performance of the generator for absorption chiller and heater. Experiment was done with a high temperature generator, a low temperature generator, heat exchangers, a condenser and a solution tank. It was tested that the double effect series flow cycle with two kinds of solution cycle. Solution cycle B showed better than solution cycle A. Two kinds of heat exchanger were used, where one's heat transfer area is bigger than the other. Bigger one increased a little performance of absorption chiller and heater. But it was not economical. From this study, we got that the coefficient of performance(COP) is 0.82 and the capacity is 7.24 kW for an absorption chiller and heater.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the amount of sugar from the afternoon snack menu of childcare facilities in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The amount of sugar was analyzed for afternoon snacks provided by childcare facilities between March and April 2016. The snacks provided were the same for processed and non-processed foods at 50.0% respectively. White milk accounted for the largest portion with 26.4%, followed by fruits with 19.9% and grains (sweet potatoes, rice cakes, etc.). It has been confirmed that the larger the facility, the lower the frequency of provision of non-processed foods, and the higher the provision of processed foods (p<0.05). Snacks served as non-processed foods showed the highest frequency of fruits and sweet potatoes. On the other hand, processed foods provided many sugar-rich products, such as liquid yogurt, hot cakes, and cereal, excluding white milk. The average sugar content was highest in processed milk products (13.9 g), followed by white milk (8.6 g), bread and snacks (8.0 g), other (4.6 g), and mixed grains (1.6 g). Of the total 216 snacks, banana flavored milk had the highest sugar content of 27.0 g, followed by strawberry milk (15.0 g) and castella (21.6 g). The findings are expected to be used as basic data for choosing the right snacks provided by childcare facilities and practicing reducing sugar intake.
기관내 삽관시 Verapamil 과 Esmolol 의 혼합투여가 혈압 및 심박수에 미치는 영향

Background : Antihypertensive agents such as verapamil and esmolol are well known for their effects of hemodynamic stabilization on tracheal intubation. However, our previous study, Verapamil and esmolol did not attenuate heart rate and blood pressure. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of combined administration of these drugs for controlling hemodynamic responses to tracheal intubation. Methods : Forty-eight patients, ASA physical status I or II, were randomly assigned to one of four groups (n = 12 each): normal saline (control), verapamil 0,1 mg/kg, esrnolol 1 mg/kg, and verapamil 0.05 mg/kg mixed with esmolol 0.5 mg/kg, Anesthesia was induced with thiopental 5 mg/kg intra- venously, and then saline, verapamil, esmalol or the mixed drugs were administered as an intravenous bolus, and immediately followed by succinylcholine 1.5 mg/kg. Tracheal intubation was performed 90 s after intravenous injection of experimental drugs. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate were measured before induction and every minute for 5 minutes after tracheal intubation. Results : There was a significant attenuation in systolic bload pressure after tracheal intubation in the verapamil and mixed groups compared to the control and esmolol groups. Heart rates were signi- ficantly lower in the esmolol and mixed groups than in the verapamil groups after tracheal intubation. Conealusions : Combined administration of Verapamil 0.05 mg/kg with esmolol 0.5 mg/kg attenuated increases in blood pressure and heart rate after tracheal intubation.
