        Benefactive Verbal Constructions in Korean

        The so-called benefactive verbal construction (BVC hereafter) in the form of 'V + /e/a cwuta/tulita' is pervasive in Korean language and has drawn attentions from many researchers in the following terms: First, the unique underlying argument structure of the construction as a subtype of complex verbal constructions (CVC hereafter). Second, the rules and constraints involved in the realization of underlying argument structures to the nominals in the surface sentences. Third, the selectional restrictions involved in the selection of cooccurring verbs. Fourth, change of meaning due to grammaticalization from CVC's (donatory or transferentive meaning) to BVC's (benefactive meaning). In this paper, the unique properties and the licensing mechanism of the argument structure of BVC's are explored and two contrasting approaches will be reviewed: one is rather a formal one and the other one is a functional one. It will be suggested as a conclusion that a set of functional filters provide clearer explanation about the construction.

        The purpose of this paper is to share an interim result of an elite Korean language education program, so-called KFOP-KU (Korean Flagship Overseas Program-Korea University). This program purports to educate a group of American elite learners of the Korean language in respective subject area to meet the demands in the field. Language education in the past century has been concentrated on the training of learners from beginning to intermediate level or above within limited range, and halted there without any further challenge or trial. Not any significant effort has been made in the field in any language so far to overcome the limit by supporting and training the learners to advanced or upper proficiency levels in an institutional setting. KFOP-KU represents a new approach in the language pedagogy. Through a `Task-based language teaching` approach in conjunction with enriched learning environment, learners are expected to reach so-called `general professional proficiency` within a year`s period.         영어 간접 말하기 문항 오답지의 화용적 오류 유인요소 분석

        The purpose of this study is to examine the context features of distractors in the English-speaking domain of the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), which consists of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs). Distractors are crucial in MCQs since they not only affect the test quality but are also useful to diagnose learners’ weaknesses and help teachers improve instruction. Therefore, this paper analyzes context feature distractors marked as Pragmatic Error Triggers (PETs) based on Grice’s maxims, following two questions: (1) What are the PET categorizations and distributions in the English-speaking domain of the CSAT which apply to Grice’s maxims? (2) Can Grice’s maxims explain all of the PETs? A total of 77 questions and 308 distractors from the 2005-2021 academic years were tagged by 2 raters. A total of 8 sub-PETs, including (1) Quantity: ① Redundancy ② Wrong Focus; (2) Quality: ③ Opposite; (3) Relation: ④ Same Referent ⑤ Wrong Referent; and (4) Manner: ⑥ Order ⑦ Turn ⑧ Vague Pronoun, were categorized. The PET ratio appears to have been relatively stable since 2016 while the overall frequency and distribution were random. Based on the findings, adjusting the PET to the CSAT distractors is suggested. This study can possibly help in the creation of context feature distractors to measure pragmatic competence and diagnose learners’ weaknesses.

        接續連鎖現象の日韓比較に關する一考察

        本硏究は、日本語と韓國語における接續連鎖現象を日韓兩コ一パスを利用して調査、分析し、どのようなタイプに分類することができるかを考察した。日本語や韓國語のように言語類型論的に膠着語と呼ばれる言語では、接續詞と接續助詞という二種類の接續表現を有している。そのために前後文脈を接續する際に接續助詞と接續詞の兩方が使われる場合があり、これを本硏究では接續連鎖現象と呼ぶ。 調査の結果、接續連鎖現象を三つのタイプに分類することができた。一つ目は接續助詞と接續詞が對應する「-て+そして」のような「形式的連鎖」、二つ目は接續助詞と接續詞が形態的には異なるが意味が同じである「-けど+それでも」のような「意味的連鎖」、三つ目は接續助詞と接續詞が形態的にも意味的にも異なる「-ながら+しかし」のような「機能的連鎖」である。 This study aims to research and to classify Conjunctive Concatenation in Japanese and Korean. Japanese and Korean are classified as agglutinative languages in sprachtyplogie, so there are twe ways to indicate a conjunctional expressions by Japanese Conjunctive particle (Korean Connective Ending) or Japanese Conjunction (Korean Conjunctive Adverb). So, there could be used both of Conjunctive particle and Conjunction to connect the context. We call this Conjunctive Concatenation. As a result, we found that there are three typs of Conjunctive Concatenation, first, Morphologic Concatenation, second, Semantic Concatenation and third, Functional Concatenation.

        한국어 ‘-고 (그리고)’와 ‘-지만 (그러나)’ 대등구문의 해석: ‘나열’과 ‘대립’의 의미를 중심으로

        We can observe that Korean speakers use concatenated forms consisting of a connective ending and a conjunctive adverb. This is called Conjunctive Concatenation(CC). This study aims to explore the discourse function of Korean CC and how CC influences coordinate construction construal. Specifically, this study compares the focus distributions of coordinate constructions using a connective ending(-ko and -ciman) with those of coordinate constructions using a CC(-ko kuliko and -ciman kulena). For this purpose, an online experiment was conducted among 95 Korean native speakers and 91 responses were analyzed by Chi-square test and frequency analysis. Participants were asked to indicate where the focus was placed in the given constructions. The result showed that there was a difference between the aspects of coordinate construction construal according to the form and meaning of connective expressions. This suggests that the conceptualizer’s construal is not always fixed and Korean CC operates as a factor which gives each clause of coordinate construction a different focus, and results in different aspects of construal.

        영어 -ly 유형 인식견지부사의 담화표지 기능 이해도 분석: 한국인 EFL 학습자와 원어민 화자를 대상으로

        English -ly adverbials (LY) with epistemic modality are frequently used as discourse markers (DM) in spoken language. In this paper, LY DM is defined as an epistemic stance marker. The experiment for this study aims to analyze Korean EFL learners" comprehension of LY used as a DM on the basis of the hypothesis that they would perceive LY differently from how English native speakers perceive them. In order to conduct the experiment, previous studies on DMs were thoroughly examined to establish the theoretical framework. Based on the framework, the Discourse Marker Interpretation Test (DMIT) was designed. The research data collected through the test were analyzed using quantitative methods. Additionally, interviews were conducted to supplement the interpretation of the research results. The experiment mainly determined that, unlike English native speakers, who properly interpreted LY with their DM function, Korean EFL learners are inclined to interpret LY used as DMs simply with their lexical meanings (the dictionary definition). Results suggest that there is a high possibility for Korean EFL learners to commit more errors when encountering LY DMs.

        한국어 낱말 묶기와 그 응용

        Application of chunking to English and some other European languages has shown that it is a viable parsing mechanism for natural languages. Although a small number of attempts have been made to apply chunking to the analysis of the Korean language, it still is not clear enough what criteria there are to identify appropriate units of chunking, and how efficient and valid the chunking algorithms would be when applied to some authentic Korean texts. The purpose of this research is to provide an alternative set of algorithms for chunking Korean, and to implement them, and to test them against some English-Korean parallel corpora, which is English and Korean bibles matched sentence by sentence. It is shown in the paper that aligning related texts and identifying matched phrases between the two languages can be achieved through appropriate chunking and matching algorithms defined on the morphologically-tagged parallel corpus. Chunking and matching processes are based on the content words rather than the function words, and the matching itself is done in terms of the transfer dictionary.         딥러닝 기법을 활용한 북한의 대외인식 분석 연구 - 『로동신문』(2016-2019) 빅데이터를 중심으로 -

        2018년 한반도에는 평화의 기류가 머물렀다. 당시의 북한의 정세인식을 이해하기 위해 본 연구는 2016년부터 2019년까지 『로동신문』 기사 전문에 대한 빅데이터 분석을 실시했다. 기계가 학습할 수 있도록 북한 문화어를 남한 표준어와 동일하게 데이터를 정제하여 『로동신문』의 어휘 유사도와 의미망 변화를 중심으로 확인하였다. 분석결과, 북한의 위협인식의 주대상은 미국으로 일관되었으며 북미대화가 이루어질 때 북한의 위협인식은 감소했던 것으로 확인되었다. 평화에 대한 인식은 대결구도에서 교류협력을 지향하는 양상으로 변화했다. 남한 정권의 진보 또는 보수 여부는 북한의 대남 인식에 유의미한 영향을 끼치지 않았으나, 남북 간 교류가 성사될 때 대남 인식이 긍정적으로 변화하는 모습이 포착되었다. 북미대화 단절 이후 북한의 위협인식은 예전과 같은 수준으로 고조되었고 인민들에게 내수 경제건설과 자력갱생을 주문하고 있었다. 그러나 북한의 평화인식 측면에서 위협의 감소보다 교류와 화합을 중시하는 쪽으로 변화가 감지되었으며, 북한은 미국과의 대화를 통한 경제제재 완화를 체재위기의 탈로로 인식하므로, 향후 미국과 남한에 대한 대적투쟁은 감소할 것으로 전망된다. 본 연구는 최신 인공지능 학습 기법인 딥러닝을 4년 치 『로동신문』 빅데이터에 적용하여 북한의 대내외 인식을 정량적으로 검증하였다는 의의를 지닌다. This article analyzed the changes in North Korea’s internal and external perceptions using the deep learning-based analysis about Rodong Sinmun from 2016 to 2019. Even if the growing peace mood that had stayed for a while on the Korean Peninsula now disappeared, the change in North Korea’s attitude over a short period of time was very unusual. It was attempted to provide a more detailed understanding about the possibility of future changes in North Korea by tracking changes in North Korea’s perceptions of South Korea and its perceptions of peace and threats. As a result, the main threat was the US for North Korea’s perspective, and it was also confirmed that South Korea could be perceived as a threat by insulting on the dignity of the supreme leader-Kim Jongeun. The fact whether South Korea’s governments consist of progressive or conservative party doesn’t seem to have significant impacts on North Korea’s perception. Expectations for improvement in inter-Korean relations in 2018 are highly likely to have been perceived by North Korea as an escape from the crisis through the ease of economic sanctions. The reason is that North Korea’s perception about the threat has returned to the same level as before after the severance of US-DPRK dialogue, and it could be revealed by ordering slogans for domestic economic development. This study applied the machine learning technique to the full text of the Rodong Sinmun for 4 years, confirming the changes in the main vocabulary of the Rodong Sinmun.

        외국어로서 한국어 학습자 말뭉치 구축의 필요성과 자료 분석

        Proverbs are regarded as cultural phrases in that they reflect people's ways of thinking and living. The aim of this paper is to expound the method of Korean culture education using proverbs. The cultural characteristics of proverbs are observed in views of subcultures, comparative cultural analysis, themes and materials. Korean proverbs represent the subcultures of the common people in the Yi dynasty. Also they reveal the characteristics of common Korean such as collective, authoritative and Confucian-oriented nature. Proverbs cover various themes and materials so that foreign learners can easily get the knowledge of the manners and customs which we Koreans have. Thus proverbs should be dealt with as the useful cultural data. They should be introduced systematically to foreign learners. The list of Proverbs had better include the proverbs of each cultural characteristic. Foreign learner should know what idiomatic and pragmatic meanings each proverb has and how to use in creative use as well as in standard use.
