This study examines the brainwave changes with the increase of ceiling height using VR and EEG devices. Specifically, It takes into consideration the duration of time the user spends in a space. The study attempts to determine as a preliminary study whether the architectural element of the ceiling height as a spatial stimulus can show a significant difference of EEG data in the physiological responses of occupants. In order to quantitatively measure the occupants responses with the increase in ceiling height, a VR space was built, and EEG data were acquired while increasing the ceiling height. Also, to examine the characteristics of brainwave changes concerning the amount of time spent in space, cumulative segments of EEG data were analyzed in 1-second intervals throughout the overall exposure time. Results indicate that when the ceiling height increased from 3m to 9m, there is a relative decrease in the low-frequency brainwaves and an increase in the high-frequency brainwaves. Specifically, this study found a significant change in brainwave activity for the first 5-10 seconds of exposure to ceiling height stimuli. This study demonstrates that VR and EEG can quantifiably identify the temporal effects physiological response according to the increase in the ceilings height, thus expanding the possibility of quantitative research of architectural qualities that can be used to assist the architects design and experience.

In urban areas with high development pressure and economic mechanisms, managing spaces and buildings with historical and cultural value is a challenge. Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) can be a solution to preserve spaces of such quality. This study aims to identify the feasibility of TDR as a tool for historic preservation in Korea by applying it around Millennium Hilton Seoul, an asset for its historical and cultural value as a pilot case. Changes in the skyline will be evaluated through 3D modeling of TDR application scenarios. The result of this study shows that cities can acquire dynamic landscapes and skylines through TDR. These scenarios point out that if the context of local culture and environment is taken into consideration, it is possible to create landmark architecture and form a skyline that utilizes local characteristics.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the Piloti-type pedestrian passage of the residential complexes in the 60"s and 70"s, which occupy a larger land area than the general buildings in Seoul such as Nakwon, Sewoon, and Yujin Arcade. Based on the theory of personal distance, it is to derive the possibility of its use. The piloti-type pedestrian passage is a pedestrian path formed in relation to the piloti. In consideration of the connection between the pedestrian passage and the exterior of the building, the research scope is limited to the pedestrian passage that is not limited to the interior of the building but to the exterior sources. In this study, the physical elements of piloti-type pedestrian passages were divided into the physical elements and the relationships among those physical elements. Then, based on the personal distance, we considered the possibility of each pedestrian passage’s usage with these relational and physical elements. As a result, the Nakwon arcade had a relatively narrow pedestrian path, and thus it was not suitable for people to use despite being located in the center of the city. In the case of Sewoon Plaza, the pedestrian walkway on the first floor was not much different from the Nakwon Arcade, but the pedestrian passage installed in 2017 connects the buildings of Sewoon Plaza, which are divided into streets, with the width of 10m space that is separated with roads. It is highly likely to be utilized in a way as a bridge. Lastly, Yujin Store has a large distance from adjacent buildings, so even it has narrow walkway, there is a possibility of forming a commercial zone as an entrance to Inwang Market. In addition, the underground passage made under the building connects 11km of Hongjecheon promenade, which has been disconnected for 50 years, and shows the possibility of use as green axis.

Recently, the first and lower floors of prime office are composed of spaces for various purposes such as commercial and cultural spaces. this study is to conduct specific spatial characteristics by analyzing lower plans of the core and to suggest that the core of the office has influenced the connection between the lower floor of the office and surroundings in the city. The scope of the study was set as a prime office (more than 33,000㎡ of floor area) with entrances located in several places, which is consist of commercial or cultural facilities. This study will propose core plans of prime offices aimed at revitalizing cities further future.

The elevation of a building represents a function and is an important factor in creating exchanges between the city and the users. Among the buildings that were remodeled from factory facilities and transformed into commercial facilities in Seongsu-dong, the SeongsuYeonbang was restructured into a commercial facility that took the structure of the original chemical plant but remodeled the standing surface to give the city a different boost. This study aims to present the possibility that the SeongsuYeonbangs elevation changes can be used as a new vibrant building while maintaining the characteristics of the city with small elevation changes compared to the past and present.
