Objective: This study was produced to examine the effects of moxibustion that had been played important role to traditional oriental medical treatment on disease. Recently, it was reported that moxi-tar which is generated in the process of moxibustion as burning combustibles decreased NO and iNOS generation in C6-glioma and RAW 264.7 cells in our Lab. The purpose of this research was to investigate the protect reaction on cell injury induced by the H2O2 in C6-glioma cells. Methods: C6-glioma cells were cultured in RPMI 1640 with FBS 10% in CO2 incubator. To study the protective effects of moxi-tar, we observed cell viability, DPPH activity, SOD activity, catalase activity and cell morphology after injury with H202. Results: Moxi-tar increased cell viability about twice as much as that of being injury by H2O2 (moxi-tar 40 μg/ml, H2O2 500 μM). And the results of free radical scavenger activity (80 μg/ml: 78.91±4.4%), SOD activity and catalase activity (80 μg/ml: 21.6 unit/mg protein) were increased by moxi-tar as dose-dependent manner. Conclusion: we concluded that the effects of moxibustion which is played important role in Oriental medicine, might be free radical scavenger effects induced by moxi-tar.

N/A Today upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopy is widely used in diagnosis and management of foreign bodies. A clinical study of 76 cases with the foreign bodies in the upper gastrointestinal tract diagnosed by flexible UGI endoscopy in Dangsan Hospital from January 1982 to December 1992 was performed. Foreign bodies were common in male (rate 1,6: 1) and in 6th decade (28 cases, 36.8%). Bezoar was the most common foreign body (57 cases, 75.0%) and foreign bodies were mostly lodged in stomach (50 cases, 65.8%). Endosopic removal or destruction was successful in 31 cases (35.4%) including all 19 cases other than bezoar. 52 cases (68.4%) hacl combined diseases, 17 cases (22.4%) had past history of operation and 9 cases (11.8%) had history nf ingestion of foreign bodies. In conclusion, UGI endoscopy and endoscopic removal is required to diagnose and manage foreign bodies in UGI tract

Objectives: Warm needling combines simultaneously the effects of acupuncture and moxibustion. This study was to investigate whether warm needling could relieve acute knee arthritis induced by carrageenan in rats. Methods: To illuminate the underlying mechanisms of the warm needling-induced antinociception, weight bearing force (WBF) was observed on the acute knee arthritic rat model. Under general anesthesia, ST36, SP9, Hakjung extra point, LI4 were punctured and stimulated with 30 mg moxa ball combustion on top of the needle (Φ0.18 X 8 ㎜). Results: In behavioral test, rats subsequently showed a reduced stepping force of the affected limb 3 hours after the induction of arthritis. Warm needling on the contralateral or ipsilateral ST36 failed to show antinociceptive effect on the acute knee arthritis. Warm needling on the contralateral SP9 or LI4 increased WBF values to normal level in the acute stage of the arthritis. Warm needling on the Hakjung extra-point resulted in the significant antinociceptive effects through acute stage. These effects of warm needling were suppressed by opioids receptor antagonist naltrexone (10 ㎎/㎏, i.p.) and alpha adrenoceptor antagonist phentolamine (5 ㎎/㎏, i.p.). Conclusion: The data suggest that warm needling-induced antinociception is differently mediated by acupoints and accomplished by activating the descending inhibitory systems including endogenous opioids and α-adrenoceptors.
