Objectives : In Korea the practice of folk remedies is widely spread. One of the main uses is the utilization of pumpkin in postpartum edema. While this practice is widely propagated no one could exactly define the evidence of its uses. Therefore we aimed to provide literature evidence of correct prescription in postpartum edema. Methods : As the use of pumpkin in postpartum edema is particular to korea, we revised all the medical book published from the 17th century, the time supposed to have been introduced pumpkin in Korean peninsula. We also researched the prescription mainly used in postpartum edema, and the common main herbal component, succium. As pumpkin and succium is homophony to 'Ho bak' in korean it had the possibility of being misinterpreted. Results : On our literature research we found the precautions of pumpkin to provoke gi-stagnatio and dampness obstruction and that it was restricted while the recovery of all kind of diseases as well as in puerperium. The main reason of postpartum edema is caused by blood stasis which when the blood gains its normal circulation, edema is dispersed by itself. For this propose main prescription was Jogyeongsan調經散 type with its main component succium which medical properties are cited in all medical classics consistently. From the literature of "Juchonsinbang" and "Uibanghapbu" we found three different prescriptions, Hobakgo琥珀膏, Hobakgo胡朴膏, and Namgwago南瓜膏 which contents and their medical proposes were equal. Conclusions : By these finding we could refer that the use of pumpkin in postpartum edema was caused by homophonic reasonal misinterpretation of succinum in korean. This research provides the literature evidence to correct pumpkin's misuse and also the necessity of restriction of the use of even most common products for medical proposes and/or at least the importance of being guided by the experts.

Background: The recent outbreak of the novel strain of influenza A (H1N1) virus has raised a global concern of the future risk of pandemic. Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM) has been combatting against contagious diseases and developed its own particular and efficient way in treating those diseases. Objectives: Provide a distinctive and effective TKM method in understanding the principles of treatment, prevention, and contraindications against influenza A though case histories. Method: We revised case histories of eminent doctors of Ming and Qing dynasties according to their clinical manifestations similar to those of influenza A. We also verified prescriptions of the 『Dong-uibogam(東醫寶鑑)』 through examining clinical practices of China today. Results: 1. The subtypes of Warm disease; Wind Warmth and Pestilence has the most similar clinical manifestation in comparison to Influenza A. Specifying these terms is important in recognizing and classifying various diseases under the name of Warm disease. 2. TKM considered not only external factors but also individual factors like general condition, diet, emotion, constitutional types, etc in the treatment of febrile diseases. 3. TKM developed a new way in the treatment of contagious diseases, considering the characteristics of each pathogen. TKM described the Warm pathogen being light as a feather, which enters through the nose, principally affecting the Lung. Therefore, they emphasized treatment with Pungent Sweet Cooling Moistening[辛甘凉潤] method. 4. As the conservation of fluid and humor is the primordial concern in the treatment of Warm disease, they restricted release of the exterior with pungent-warm and purgation method. The purgation methods was used exclusively to decrease fever and preserve fluid and humor. 5. The only differentiating characteristics of Influenza A with seasonal influenza are vomiting and diarrhea. Case research revealed the possibility of these manifestations to be a mechanism of restoration. 6. TKM provides alimento prevention method like Mint Pear Porridge, mung bean, and etc also combination of herbal medicine, Also emphasized in the conservation of essence for the prevention of contagious diseases. Conclusions: TKM developed its unique way in understanding the pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of contagious diseases and formed its independent scheme of Warm Disease. This Knowledge in febrile contagious disease is relevant today in providing diverse treatment and prevention for influenza A.

This study is purposed to list the full translation of 『The secret method of tumor treatment(治종方)』 and to report the results to the academic world. The results are described as follows. 1. It seems to be difficult to accept the current 『The secret method of tumor treatment(治종方)』 as the original script of 『The method of tumor treatment(治종方)』. It seemed that the Imeonguk(任彦國)`s `Important and Valuable Method(遺方)` at the era of Joseon was copied by handwriting among the private sector. 2. There are contents which are overlapped with 『Experience Method of Acupuncture(針灸經驗方)』. A further study is required whether the 『Experience Method of Acupuncture』 was added later on. Because resolution for the before and after of these two books may be acted as an important matter to conjecture the related schools with acupuncture science. 3. The Korean style unique method and terminology were introduced frequently in 『The method of tumor treatment』. Besides that, materials for the medicine were filled with the things of easy-to-contact in our daily life. It is regarded as one of the excellent materials to confirm the superiority of oriental medical science through the clinical experiments today.

The Chapter of 「Records on Steam Room(蒸室記)」in 『Shandangjip(山堂集)』by CHOI Chungsung is a rare and notable one in that it contains the first concrete and detailed description and view of steam shower in the early Joseon Dynasty. It is known that Choi`s Wind stroke(brain stroke) deteriorated due to excessive steam shower. He unreasonably entered the steam room 4 or 5 times a day for 9 consecutive days even though external pathogens had intruded into visceral organs and his energizing chi got less and weaker. By this excessive steam showering, his righteous chi was exhausted and eventually burned out. Given some records in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty writing that people died due to excessive steam shower, there was no established medical theory on the effect of steam shower before the publication of 『Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑)』.

In recent times, a medical book called 『WooJam JabJeo』 has been published in complete Korean version. Not a few cases where the vivid appearance of the place for medical treatment are included intact in this medical book. This study is attempting to analyze one symptom of a disease by choosing it among the diseases our ancient sages treated in the light of the fact that there are only a few models which are applied to today’s clinical treatment by our ancient sages appearance of medical service. This study believes that such an analysis of ancient medicine could be a part of the efforts to increase the applicable models to today’s clinical treatment one by one. This paper is aimed at introducing and analyzing the three cases of Ganwul which are found in 『WooJam JabJeo』 It’s because this study thinks that Ganwul is a symptom over which oriental medicine can not only establish dominance over western medicine it its diagnosis and prescription but Ganwul will also have high applicability to today’s clinical treatment. Through this research, this study was abe to perceive that the author. Jang, Tae-kyeong of 『WooJam JabJeo』 had vast knowledge of medical theories, especially in author’s understanding diseases and composing prescription based on 『Donguibogam』 Up to the present time, domestic medical circles have understood the emergence of 『Jejungshinpyeon(濟衆新編)』(1799) or 『Bangyakhappyeon(方藥合編)』(1885) as an outlining work at most for overcoming such a limit of 『DonguiBogam』 superficially. However, by looking into Jang Tae-kyeong’s understanding of 『DonguiBogam』 this study was able to know the fact that the emergence of such medical books was possible because the medical knowledge included in 『Dongui Bogam』 was fully understood and digested in society of the Josen Dynasty. Conclusively, such a fact reminds us that it serves as a momentum to confirm once more that 『Dongui Bogam』 could be a good model for even today’s clinical treatment.

There are two transcriptions of 『ChiJongBang』in Korea at the moment. The first is the Jangseo-gak ibrary transcription(K3-380). The title is “ChiJongBang(治?方)” and it starts with the contents of 「ChiJongBang(治?方)」, followed by 「HoeChunYoGyeol(回春要訣)」, 「NoInSeopYangBang(老人攝養方)」, 「SoABang(小兒方)」. 「ChiJongBang(治?方)」does not even take up a large portion of the book. The other transcription is 「ChiJongBang(治?方)」in Geojil’s『Uihui(宜彙)』, which was presented into the worldin 1871(the 8th year of King Go-jong) by GeumRiSanIn(錦里山人). The contents of the two transcriptions are the same, and both are left by ImEonGuk. The latter part is identical to the contents of 『ChimGuGyeongHeomBang』. It was common for a medical book to have additional useful information attatched in the end, so it was thought that somebody added a part of 『ChimGuGyeongHeomBang』at the end of 『ChiJongBiBang』. But the discovery of a woodcut 『ChiJongBang』in Korean annotation confirmed that the making of this book was led by the government, and the fact that abscess was a big part of healthcare around the ImJinWaeRan(Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592) period.
