Background: Severely injured patients need an optimal triage system that can differentiate those patients who require the resources of the trauma center from those who do not. American national guidelines recommend that patients with Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores less than 14 or triaged-Revised Trauma Score (t-RTS) less than 11 should be triaged to trauma centers. Although, in many studies, the GCS score has been shown to be the strongest single prognostic predictor in trauma patients, the presence of unmeasurable components of the GCS limits its usefulness. Also, it is difficult for emergency medical technicians to estimate the GCS in a prehospital setting because of its complexity and the shortage of time. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of the motor component of the GCS in severely injured patients. We hypothesized that the motor component of the GCS (GCSM) would be equally sensitive as the total GCS in triage of severely injuried patients. Methods: We reviewed a total of 114 patient who visited the Emergency Center of Korea University Ansan Hospital between December 2001 and September 2002. Of those 114 patients, 36 were excluded because of inadequate medical records or visiting after cardiac arrest. The parameters that we used as tools for analysi, were age, sex, GCS score, RTS, Injury Severity Score (ISS), actual survival rate (As), and probable survival rate (Ps). We defined severely injured patients (t-RTS ≤11) requiring care in a trauma center or intensive care unit. Based on American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACSCOT) guidelines, we defined GCS ≤13 as positive triage by GCS, ISS ≥16 as positive triage by ISS, and GCSM ≤5 as positive triage by the motor component of GCS. The sensitivity and the specificity were calculated, and a statistical analysis by t-test was conducted with two-tail α levels of 0.05. Results: Of the 78 patients, the mean age was 44.7±2.2,and the mean ISS was 21.7±1.0. The GCSM was found to have a sensitivity of 85.7% and a specificity of 98.0% for t-RTS≤11. The GCS had a sensitivity of 89.3% and a specificity of 90.0% (p = not significant). Conclusion: Our results indicate that the motor component of GCS is a sensitive predictor of patients` poor prognosis and that the GCSM is equivalent to the GCS for prehospital triage. In view of the simplicity of the GCSM, its substitution for the GCS in triage systems might lead to a higher use rate among prehospital healthcare providers.

The purpose of this study is to present the problems of urban ecosystem imbalance in Seoul and the need to restore housing functions through comparison with Manhattan, New York, which grew earlier than Seoul and has been striving to solve urban problems and restore urban ecosystems. The residential status in urban commercial use areas was investigated through analysis of the total amount of residential space, characteristics of each type of residential building, and distribution of residential buildings. Through this, it can be seen that most of the space in Seoul's historic city center is biased toward commercial roads, and there are significantly insufficient high- and high-density mixed-use buildings suitable for urban dwellings compared to Manhattan's. In addition, it can be seen that the complex building in the historical city center of Seoul is located adjacent to the outskirts of the target site. In conclusion, Seoul's historical city center does not provide an appropriate residential space for creating an urban ecosystem, and it is necessary to come up with measures to restore housing functions.
서울 도심 상업용도지역 내 주거현황과 시사점 - 서울 역사도심과 뉴욕 맨해튼을 중심으로 -

본 연구는 서울보다 일찍이 성장하여 도심 문제해결과 도시 생태계 회복을 위해 주거 공간의 제공에 노력을 기울여온 뉴욕 맨해튼 도심과의 현황의 비교를 통해 서울 역사도심의 도시생태계 불균형의 문제점과 그에 따른 주거 기능 회복의 필요성을 제시하는 데에 목적을 가지고 있다. 주거 공간의 총량, 주거용도 건축물 유형별 특성, 주거용도 건축물의 분포 분석을 통해 도심 상업용도지역 내 주거현황을 조사하였다. 이를 통해, 서울 역사도심은 대부분의 공간이 상업용도에 편향되어 있으며, 도심주거에 적합한 중고밀도의 복합용도 건축물이 맨해튼 도심에 비해 현저히 부족함을 알 수 있었다. 또한 서울 역사도심은 복합용도 건축물이 대상지의 외곽에 인접하여 위치함을 알 수 있었다. 결론적으로 서울 역사도심은 도시 생태계 조성을 위한 적절한 주거 공간을 제공하지 못하고 있으며, 주거 기능 회복을 위한 방안 마련이 필요하다.

This paper presents and analyzes urban planning process to be adopted to create ubiquitous space in city environment, using City of Seoul's Digital Media Street Project as a case study. The Digital Media Street will become the main pedestrian thoroughfare in the Digital Media City (DMC) in Sangam area, planned to become the world's first ubiquitous environment in full urban scale. Ubiquitous space is reinterpreted from an urban planning perspective, and a new approach to planning such a space is introduced, including strategies to couple technology, space, and human activities. Methodology, role of different actors, planning process, and institutional arrangement are examined in turn, and this yields further agenda for improvements that can be made in planning ubiquitous spaces in the future.

Many cities around the world are adopting smart city as a new urban model. In this context, smart city indexes are becoming more important for assessing and evaluating smart cities. A number of smart city indexes were developed in Korea in the past few years, by different entities for different purposes and with no relation to each other. From a user’s perspective, this led to difficulty in understanding smart city indexes and also reduced the usefulness and effectiveness of various indexes. The purpose of this study is to analyze the smart city indexes currently being developed in Korea, and present a comprehensive framework that can integrate and link these smart city indexes. First, we define ‘result-centric’ and ‘process-centric’ evaluation structures for smart city indexes based on literature research. Second, the features and structures of smart city indexes under development were analyzed to develop a comprehensive framework for all smart city indexes, with focus on the indexes from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Third, the concept of smart city index framework is presented, in which various smart city indexes can be organized and utilized. This framework is expected to provide better understanding of different smart city indexes in Korea, and enable better usage and communication among different users of these indexes to address various economic, environmental, social, and other urban issues.
가덕도 연안 해수에서 분리된 Vibrio vulnificus의 검출 특성 및 항생제 내성

We investigated the distribution, molecular characteristics, and antimicrobial resistance of Vibrio vulnificus isolated from seawater at Gadeok Island, the Republic of Korea between June to October. Interestingly no isolates were detected between December to February. The detection rate of V. vulnificus was high (80-100%) from July to September 2019 and from June to September 2020. This coincided with the relatively low salinity of the seawater, which ranged from 7.8-29.9 practical salinity units for that period. Additionally, V. vulnificus had a high detection rate at sampling stations near the Nakdong river. The detection rates of virulence genes, such as vvhA, viuB, and vcgC, among the isolates were 97.1%, 44.1%, and 57.4% in 2019 and 100%, 43.0%, and 50.0% in 2020, respectively. Notably, viuB and vcgC were detected in V. vulnificus isolated between June to October when water temperature was above 20°C. The antimicrobial susceptibility analysis of 80 isolates revealed that most of the strains were susceptible to most antimicrobial agents. However, some isolates showed intermediate resistance to cefepime (18.8%), cefoxitin (58.8%), and erythromycin (22.5%). Of note, 3.8% of the tested strains were resistant to cefoxitin. The minimum inhibitory concentration of highly cefoxitin-resistant strains was determined to be less than 32 μg/mL.

The structural and optical properties of ?? (0.0≤χ≤1.0) crystals grown by the directional melting method were investigated from the measurements of XRD, optical absorption and photoluminescence. It was found from the analysis of XRD measurements that the crystal structure of ?? crystals was an ordered vacancy chalcopyrite(OVC) over a composition of 0.0≤χ≤1.0. The lattice constants a and c was linearly decreased with an increasing of a composition χ. On the other hand, the distortion factor (2-c/a_ was linearly increased with an increasing of a composition χ. The optical energy gap at 300 K of ?? crystals was varied from 1.23 eV(χ=0.0) to 1.82 eV (χ=1.0), which shows a linearly composition dependence. Photoluminescence spectrum of ?? crystals at 10 K showed a broad emission band due to donor-acceptor pair recombination. These emission bands were shifted toward a short wavelength region as a composition χ increased. The composition dependence of the emission peak energies exhibited a similarity with that of the optical energy gap.
대형 화재로 인한 사상자의 손상 유형과 합병증 : 동인천 라이브호프 화재를 중심으로

Background: High risks of fire alway exist for buildings in urban areas, especially those in downtown. Crowds, as well as more complex and larger structures, may cause more victims in the event of fire; therefore, emergency medical service plans must be established for such disastrous events. Methods: On the evening of October 30,1999, a fire broke out in downtown, Dong-Incheon Live-Hof restaurant; 56 people were killed and 76 were injured. Most of them were teenagers. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the victims, Results: 1) Among the 56 dead, 54 died from smoke inhalation, one from extensive burns, and one from sepsis during treatment. 2) Among the 76 injured, 70 patients suffered from smoke inhalation, 53 from burns, and 9 from several types of trauma (sprains, contusions, lacerations, abrasions, fractures, etc.). 3) Later complications were laryngeal edema, pulmonary edema, scar contracture, and hypoxic brain damage, and so forth. 4) Post traumatic stress syndrome was unexpectedly more prevalent in mildly to moderately injured survivors and witnesses than in seriously injured survivors. Conclusion: Many complications exist after a fire. Some may be resolved in time, but others may result in permanent sequelae. Early rescue, early triage, and early management during transport by emergency medical service (EMS) personnel can result in fewer complications and a lower mortality rate. Therefore, we propose the establishment of plans to be followed during various major disasters.
