Occurrence of Hairless Piglets with Congenital Goiter

A diagnosis of iodine-deficient goiter was confirmed in newborn piglets that were born hairless edematous, and with markedly enlarged thyroid gland. Clinically, most of the piglets were born dead, extreme weakness or dying within a few hours of birth. Gestation periods were prolonged for 3-7 days. Histopathologically, hair follicles were scarce and reduced in size, contained slender hairs, and revealed a shallow penetration into the hypodermis that showed severe diffuse edema. Thyroid glands had severely hyperplastic follicles and poorly staining colloid. The follicles were irregular in size and shape depending on varying amounts of lightly eosinophilic and granular colloid in the lumen. The iodine content of the diet fed to the sows and plasma total thyroxine and triiodothyronine concentration of sows were very low. This is a first report for iodine-deficient goiter in newborn piglets in Korea.

The Neospora sp. was isolated from the brain of 1 calf via continuous in vitro cultivation in Vero cell. Neospora tachyzoites were observed 45 days after inoculation of the homogenized brain suspension into the Vero cell. The isolated parasite (named tentatively as NCKB-1) was morphologically and ultrastructurally similar to the previously reported Neospora sp isolated in cattle (BPA-1, JPA-1). A comparison of the antigenic reactivity of cultivated tachyzoites with polyclonal antisera to Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii confirmed that this protozoal isolate was similar to N caninum. This is the first report of successful isolation of Neospora sp from cattle in Korea.
Porcine Circovirus Infection in Weaned Pigs with Postweaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome in Korea

Eight nursery to grower pigs exhibiting weight loss and sudden death were diagnosed as postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) based on the results of gross findings, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, fluorescent antibody test, virus isolation, PCR, serology, and electron microscopy. Groosly, the pigs had a rough hair coats and were severely emaciated. And moot lymph nodes were pale and enlarged. Lungs were not fully collapsed and exhibited 10 to 40% pale red cranioventral consolidation. Histopathologically, typical lymphohistiocytic interstitial to bronchointerstitial pneumonia, chronic lymphadenitis, severe lymphoid depletion, and basophilic intracytoplasmic inclusions were noted in the most lymphoid tissues. Porcine circovirus panicles were observed in the inguinal lymph node of the pigs by electron microscopy. Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) antigens or viral DNAs were detected in the lesions of all pigs using immunohistochemistry or PCR. Two PCV2 were isolated from a homogenate of pooled lung and lymph node in 2 of the 5 pigs. Additionally, antigens of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and Hemophilus (H.) parasuis were also detected by immunofluorescent antibody test. Serologically, 55% of randomly selected sows and fattening pigs was serum antibody positive to PCV2 by an indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test and approximately 18 % of animals in the herd were serologically pooitive by the ELISA kit for PRRSV. To our knowledge, this is the first report of PMWS co-infected with PCV-2, PRRS, and H. parasuis in Korea.

A case of repeated bovine abortion caused by Neospora caninum is described. The 3-year-old Holstein cow, which was seropositive to N caninum antibody by indirect immunofluoresent assay, aborted consecutively within a 10-month period. Two fetuses of 6- or 5-month of gestation were aborted in June 1996 and March 1997, respectively. Histologically, multifocal necrotizing encephalitis, nonsuppurative periportal hepatitis, myocarditis, and myositis were observed in both fetuses. Tachyzoites or tissue cysts detected in the brain, heart and liver were positive to N caninum but negative to Toxoplasma gondii by immunohistochemical method. The results of our study demonstrate that repeated abortion due to N caninum actually occurs in Korea. This is believed to the first report of repeated abortion associated with N caninum in Korea.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of circulating air volume to chemical composition of tobacco leaves during the bulk curing. The results were as follows : The decrease of circulating air volume prolonged curing time as the case of a 0.058m3/min. kg; but, no remarkable changes with a 0.11m3/min. kg and a 0.083m3/min. kg. When the circulating air volume was decreased, compared with 0.11m3/min. kg, sugar content was increased while total nitrogen and nicotine content showed a reduced values. In case of a 0.058m3/min. kg and a 0.083m3/min.kg, solanone and damascenone were high. Some of volatile neutral constituents and volatile organic acids were increased during curing process ; especially, their quantities were remarkably increased during the midrib drying stage. As circulating air volume decreased the equilibrium moisture content was increased, while leaf shatter index and filling capacity were decreased.

50 g 내외의 4년근 수삼을 물로 세척한 후 한 뿌리씩 산소투과도가 낮은 기능성 연포장재 필름 주머니(ONY/LDPE/LLDPE;200×300 mm, 90 μm)에 넣고 밀봉하여 25oC에서 보관기간별로 수삼의 외관품질 변화를 조사하고 외관품질이 양호하게 유지된 정상 수삼, 곰팡이가 발생한 수삼 및 연화가<br/> 일어난 수삼의 관능특성과 이화학적 특성을 비교 조사하였다. 수삼의 외관품질은 주로 연화에 의하여 불량해졌으며 보관 20일째에는 불량률이 전체의 75%에 달하였다. 연화가 일어난 수삼은 정상 수삼에 비하여 경도가 약하였고 끈적거리는 정도가 강하였으며 자극적인 냄새와 신 냄새가 매우 강하였고 단 냄새, 신맛 및 단맛이 비교적 강했던 반면에 인삼 냄새, 신선한 냄새는 매우 약하였고 쓴맛은 비교적 약하였다. 한편 연화가 일어난 수삼은 경도와 pH가 정상 수삼보다 낮았고 수분과 일반성분의 함량은 정상 수삼과 비슷한 수준을 나타내었다. 또, 연화가 일어난 수삼의 diol계 사포닌성분 함량 및 불포화 지방산과 포화지방산의 비(USFA/SFA)는 정상 수삼보다 낮았고 수용성 펙틴질 함량은 정상 수삼보다 높았다. The changes in sensory characteristics, physical and chemical properties of raw ginseng (4-year-root, 50 g/root) were investigated when they were packaged individually in a soft film bag (ONY/LDPE/L-LDPE; 200×300 mm,90 μm) and stored at 25oC for twenty days. Seventy-five percentages of sixty raw ginseng samples were adulterated and the most phenomenon of adulterating the raw ginseng was softening. Softened ginsengs were softer and stickier and they had stronger pungent and sour odors, stronger sour and sweet tastes than normal ginseng but had weaker ginseng and fresh odors. In addition, softened ginsengs exhibited lower hardness and pH, lower contents of diol-type ginsenosides, lower ratios of unsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids and higher contents of water-soluble pectins than normal ginseng while contents of moisture, crude protein, ether-soluble materials and crude ash of the softened ginsengs were similar to those of normal ginseng.<br/> Key words : packaged raw ginseng, softening, sensory characteristics, diol-type ginsenosides, water-soluble pectins.
