The aging of Korean society is coming to the fore and its speed is unprecedented. Along with the volume rise in the population of the elderly, the rise of the elderly of means and high education stimulates the transition of our focus from "a desire of longevity" to "successful aging" The research objective is to classify groups by the different definitions of aging and to characterize each group. We reviewed related theoretical examples and recent study results in order to make a questionnaire about the definition of successful aging. We targeted 32 middle aged men and women who live in Kwang-ju Metropolis and analyzed the collected data and classified them into three types. The first type is the 'Active Participants' which is identified as a group that actively participates in society with a purpose oriented mind. This group considers successful aging as having a service mentality with generosity. The majority of women of those who participated in the survey belong to this group and this probably is understood that the high education of women influenced themselves to seek self-achievement and the sense of social participation. The second type is the 'Subjective satisfaction seekers with an emphasis the couple relationship' who guarantee their financial security while managing a good family life. This group considers the content of their own life rather than depending on their children's life as a key element for successful aging. As opposed to the first type where the majority of women are found, the majority of men with careers belong to this group. The last type is the 'Independent life style seekers' who do not rely on their children while maintaining their health both mentally and physically. This group considers successful aging is to be able to independently manage their life without their children's support and considers staying in the rest home at an elderly age a good idea.
