백남준의 사회학, 음악장의 전복자에서 미술장의 지배자로

연구자들은 백남준의 수수께끼를 사회학적 이론과 개념으로 풀어내고자 한다. 먼저, 연구자들은 백남준의 성취가 단순히 미학적 결과물이 아니라, 백남준의 실천과 사회공간이 조응하는 지점에서 철저하게 사회화되는 과정과 분리할 수 없다고 생각한다. 백남준의 미학적 성취는 그것을 가능하게 했던 특정한 객관적인 사회적 조건의 맥락 위에서 평가되어야 한다. 백남준은 ‘모방될 수 없는 신비한 천재’가 아니라, 그에게 주어진 역사적이고 사회적인 맥락 위에서 특정한 방식의 이미지조직과 분류를 수용하거나, 재편한 사회적 행위자일 수 있다. 연구자들은 논문에서 백남준을 그저 백남준 개인으로 다루지 않을 것이다. 연구자들은 백남준을 당대 예술장에서 비디오아트라는 이름으로 실현된 객관적이고 사회적인 현상으로 다루고자 한다. 사회적 현상으로서의 백남준이란, 백남준 개인의 미학적 실천과 사회적 공간이 교차하는 지점에서 형성된 복잡한 사회적 결과라는 것이다. 따라서 객관화된 사회적 현상으로서의 백남준은 개별 이미지 실천자로서 백남준의 의식이나 사상 못지않게 백남준을 구성하는 중요한 영역이다. 식민지 한국에서, 제국주의 일본을 거쳐, 독일과 뉴욕, 그리고 다시 80년대 후반 대한민국으로 회귀하는 과정에서, 백남준과 사회공간이 만들어낸 궤적은 반드시 백남준의 주관이나 판단으로 환원될 수 없는 사회적 결과를 초래했으며, 지금까지 백남준에 대한 대부분의 연구업적들이 간과했던 지점이기도 하다. We are to solve the Paik Nam June phenomena with sociological theories and concepts. First of all, we think that Paik's achievement is not mere aesthetic consequence of individual artist, and can not be separated from the process of the socialization where Paik's practice and social space at his time confront with each other. Paik's aesthetic achievement should be evaluated on the context of specific social condition that made that achievement possible. Paik is not such an genius that can not be imitated, but an social actor who accepted or reshuffled a certain ways of organizing and classifying visual images on given historial and social context. We will not treat Paik as an individual but objective and social reality that is realized in the name of ‘video art' in art field. Paik as social reality means complicated social consequence that has been formed by the interaction between Paik's practice and social space. Paik, the objectified social realty is as important area that should be explained as individual art. In the process of moving from colonial Korea, through imperialist Japan, German and New York, and returning to Korea in 1980s, the trajectory made by the interaction between Paik and social space has resulted in social consequence that can not be reduced to Paik's subjective intention or judgement. This social aspect of Paik's art has been neglected by almost all attempts of explaining on Paik, and his video art. became a model for many modern European and American cities like Berlin in Germany; Avignon, Marseilles, Lyons in
