Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) in children is rare, accounting for less than 10% of all sudden deafness. The etiology of ISSNHL is uncertain, but viral infeqction and the distribution of blood circulation in the inner ear are suspected as the causes of the disease. Therefore, stellate ganglion block (SGB) and antiviral agent have been used for its treatment. Recently we experienced an effective series of 12 SGBs in pediatric patient with ISSNHL, with no severe complication. (Korean J Anesthesiol 2007; 52: 237~40)

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is an inherited connective tissue disorder characterized by skin hyperelasticity, joint hypermobility and tissue fragility. The clinical manifestations vary depending on the type of disease. Due to multi-organ involvement and varied clinical presentations, no uniform anesthetic recommendations can be made. We report a case of a patient with EDS of an unknown type who successfully underwent an emergency cesarean section under general anesthesia. (Korean J Anesthesiol 2007; 53: 140~4)
Effects of Sand Content on Conversion Factor for Estimation of ECe from EC1:5

Electrical conductivity (EC) of soil-water extracts is commonly used to assess soil salinity. However, EC of soil-water extract needs to be converted to EC of saturated soil paste extracts (ECe), which is the standard measure of soil salinity. Although many regression models are available to predict ECe from soil-water extract EC, application of a site-specific model to other independent sites is not straightforward due to confounding soil factors including texture. This study was conducted to develop a universal regression model to estimate a conversion factor for predicting ECe from EC measured in extracts of 1:5 soil:water ratio (EC1:5) by employing a site - specific soil texture (i.e., sand content). A regression model, EC conversion factor=[(8.9105e0.0106×%sand) / 1.2984] (r²=0.97, P < 0.001), was developed through field survey of coastal saline soils (n=173) and lab experiments using artificial saline soils with different textures (n=6, sand content: 10 – 65%) and salinity levels (n=7, salinity: 1 – 24 dS m-1). Model performance tested using independent dataset showed that ECe prediction using the developed model is more suitable for highly saline soils than for low saline soils. The feasibility of the regression model should be tested in other sites, and other soil factors affecting EC conversion factor also need to be explored to revise and improve the model through further studies.
